I'm fairly sure his current contract is around the $550k mark

If it's a competitive market for his talent then I'd imagine 5 x $600k to $650k is about the ballpark to get it done.

If he can add more consistency to his game I think he's a 40+ goal a year third forward with more supply and two genuine key forwards to take the best defenders. He's not elite by league standards but he would probably get a game with every team. Just sign him up!

It is kinda funny that there is the potential that within a very short period of time two people that they want will have spurned them for little old us.
Are we getting Ross Lyon as an assistant coach now?

All the talk centred round Essendon, You’d imagine that west coast and freo would be sniffing around as well.

i think go home factor isn't really a part of it for him, seems very settled and happy in melbourne

The BNF on tomorrow will give us some answers I think. If there is no announcement of him signing then the possibility that he is leaving is more likely. He would have an offer from us. Knows what we have moving forward no that we have signed Clarkson and Viney. He would have spoken with them. If it is Essendon, then there would be nothing stopping that being announced. If no signature and no Essendon announcement then there is a chance there is another team in his ear, and they are probably still playing finals.
Nice guess work - he isn’t leaving. Timing or otherwise has NO bearing on whether he’s going or staying. I have my info from someone close to him. So I’ll use that word again - patience.

I wonder if Cam the chef is a steamed or fried dimmy guy....

Just as A and B graders in top sides often accept a bit less so they can all be crammed in to pursue a flag, bottom sides often pay overs for good players because:

  • there're far more C and D graders (because they're young or just shitmen)
  • most of the salary cap has to be paid no matter how bad a club's list is, and
  • A and B graders can charge a premium for having to put up with a rebuild's losses and green kids.

So Zurhaar won't attract the same $$ from a top 6 or even top 10 side but that doesn't mean he's not worth us paying a premium for. Until we consistently can start pulling free agents out of other clubs, we have to pay a bit over for our A and B graders.

I can't see the full article because of paywall but The Australian reckons we lowballed him and he'll entertain interest from St Kilda.

[the following is an excerpt from a longer piece largely about *]

The Bombers have significant salary cap room to spend on mature talent and are interested in North Melbourne’s Cameron Zurhaar and West Coast’s Junior Rioli, among others.

However Essendon’s endeavours to bolster its list has been made more difficult by the fact that, unlike North Melbourne, its target players are unable to yet meet the Bombers’ senior coach or receive concrete information about their potential new roles in red and black.

The new coach will also play a significant role in the bid to win the signature of star ballwinner Darcy Parish who is out of contract and a restricted free agent at the end of next year.

Zurhaar, 24, has been lowballed by the Kangaroos and could also entertain interest from St Kilda as he weighs up whether to stick with North under new coach Alastair Clarkson.

The Roos remained confident he would remain at Arden St and had his best football in front of him in blue and white.

The Dons are preparing to swoop on Cam Zurhaar after he was low-balled by North.

But a commitment could hinge on an improved long-term offer to Zurhaar who looms as a crucial cog alongside Nick Larkey in 2023.
