Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

I don't think Roberts is a winger. [But then I didn't really see him as a backman either - unlike Kiama Chris !] KC, can you see Roberts playing on the wing as caesar88 contemplates?
Too slow. He got smoked chasing after opponents last year, including oppo key forwards. Don't get me wrong, he's an up and coming gun and I really rate him but I think he will get found out on a wing.

Not in front of Gulden or McInerney. Not quite quick or evasive enough.
Could return to the midfield as a hybrid or possibly a tagger? But he'd be competing with Jordon who did those roles pretty darn well. Was one of our better performers in the GF.
Maybe Harry replacement? Agility might be an issue.
Pretty handy where he is.

We still have too many mids.
We tucked a few in defence in Florent and Roberts.
We tucked one into the forwards in Jordon The Tagger.
We still have inside types Adams and Sheldrick on the pine.
We still need to move Mills to the mids to be that inside big bodied mid.

Lloyd may well play well. But he is under pressure from a better balanced side.
And that is a good problem to have.

I would argue that Florent and Roberts and Jordon are under the same pressure as Lloyd. They all need to perform and earn their spot. If a flanker misses out, it shouldn't just be the oldest, but the least-deserving.

Agree. Parker leaving gave us valuable draft points, and as good as he was it relieved some pressure in the mids.
There are a lot of players that deserve to be best 22. But some will miss out.
Getting the side in balance is more important than egos. C'est la vie.

The tricky part selection-wise is that there may not be a lot between them. Chemistry will be important.

I assume you mean Florent is under pressure to retain a spot?

I have to disagree there.

There’s absolutely ZERO chance Florent is dropped. None.

And in my humble opinion - nor should he be. He’s a top 12 player in the side.

Ditto for Lloyd. He's played 249 games, is one of our most reliable players and best endurance runners. The idea he might not be picked is sheer fantasy.

I think Lloyd is a good player, has been extremely valuable to us and can be valuable still.

But he's not in my R0 Best 23, because I'm picking the best team rather than the best 23 players on the list.

Lloyd had been largely shunted out of defence by Roberts. Justifiably. Now he did well on the wing, but this was in the absence of a playing/fit Jmac.

With Jmac back, joining Gulden on the wing, and Roberts justifiably staying in defence, competition for spots heats up.

Add to that, the need to bolster the midfield and small forward options, based on our grand final performance, someone's going to have to miss out.

If Mills is returning to midfield, then Chad will be on the wing/HF more. Thus can only really see one backup wing/HB spot for either of Florent or Lloyd. I think Florent shades him.

Now, the coaches might disagree, and despite all the GF-inspired talk on this board about us becoming more contested and improving forward pressure, we decide to play all of our (good) flankers again. But that doesn't fit with what we have been crying about for months.

Lloyd is still comprehensively in our top 3 wingmen. And we need 3. And Warner will be playing between inside and forward, not the wing. So, I'd say Lloyd's pretty safe for now.

I agree we need 3 wingmen, but if Lloyd gets the nod, then does Florent miss?

I've got him interchange. Pretty much our utility that can play across 3 lines (assume he's had reps in the fwd line). He's not a better winger than Lloyd/Gulden/Jmac. He plays wing/hb well but not better than others (roberts/blakey) imo. Unknown about fwd work but I think he's got the skills & physicality for it. Basically the versatile player that Cox wants in the team BUT cox mentioned they're figuring out if Jmac can be that versatile player, so maybe Florent is a wing or hb in Cox's view? lol

I don't see how all of Blakey, Roberts, Gulden, Jmac, Florent and Lloyd are in the same 22...if at the same time we bolster our midfield with the likes of Mills and Gus, and our forward line with say Campbell and Cleary. Note: I have one of Gus or Cleary as sub, so it's not like these are all in the 22 either.

If we don't bolster midfield or small fwd stocks, then OK, but that's a large part of what we've been crying about for the last 4 months.

I'm really just trying to be consistent with what many (and I) see as the way forward. More contested, more pressure. A wing/HB flanker needs to make way for that to occur imo.

Unless he can reinvent himself as a forward, then yes probably? Would that be so blasphemous though?
No it wouldn't. Instead of missing altogether, you could also have Lloyd play, Ollie sub (instead of one of Gus or Cleary imo, the other is in the 22). He can play anywhere really.

I've got all of them apart from cleary in my best 23 haha. I've only got Mclean as the genuine KPF in the fwd line.

I did float the idea of Florent being something of a utility. He can be brilliant in bursts, so a sub role wouldn't be horrific on him.

I think Florent is signed until 2029.
To have a player on the list for the next 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 years as sub is a bit absurd.

Florent will play.

Probably. But the competition is fierce. If Florent plays, does that mean Campbell, who is signed for 25, 26, 27, 28, is played as sub? Does it mean your man Sheldrick misses?

I suspect if competition for spots can be this high after the pre-season games, then there'll be an element of surprise with whoever it is that misses out.

I think all will play at sometime.
Especially in 25, 26, 27, 28.

Injuries happen too.

I think Campbell forward with Warner looks good. Plus one less tall.
I think Wicks as backup to Cunningham is a good call. Wicks is an aggressive little bugger who loves getting the better of his opponent.

Florent is a conundrum. He can play multiple positions. I will leave that up to Cox.
