Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

Jake Lloyd

DOB: 20 September 1993
DEBUT: 2013
DRAFT: 2014
RECRUITED FROM: Horsham Demons (Vic)/North Ballarat U18

Just quietly I thought Lloyd was poor last week, too. I was shocked that he was getting praised (and I am the first to sing his praises!)

He had a nearly identical performance this week. Costly fumbles, uncertainty with his ball use, and, most frustratingly, a tendency to slow the play down, even when there are good options ahead of him. The latter I presume goes back to the uncertainty he seems to have at the moment. Will I hit that target, maybe not, nah better wait for a safer option. Etc.

He looks nervous and not confident. Compare it to the form he showed late last year where he was running hard and taking bounces and kicking long.

He's also winning more ball in the defensive half, which I don't love when combined with Roberts (also more of a conservative ball user) and Rampe (also playing with a lack of confidence.) But then he's not exactly hitting targets lace-out inside 50 or kicking straight for goal anymore, either.

Been an absolute gem of a pick

You don’t play over 250 games of league footy in any comp without durability and ability.

Just think he is done at afl level

I think he certainly needs to be wing even half forward, not back and needs to stop killing the play

Been a champ, so don't wanna completely write him off but really looking off the pace so far this year. Not to the point where you put line through forever, but in the short term honestly he should be on the selection chopping block. Wonder if Cox will be ballsy enough to make a call like that so early into his coaching career.
He and Roberts have a very similar game, unless there's a positional change this is another one of those calls where it almost has to be one or the other in the side, not both (Roberts in much better form).

Lloyds almost stifling our momentum in plays by slowing down and being too conservative/too slow with decision making...but even in the conservatism isn't hitting the simple 20m kicks and easy handballs anymore.
He's never been a booming kick but this year he looks like he couldn't kick over a jam tin....and when he tries to hack kick they go almost 30m straight up in the air.
Hopefully he finds form at some stage, but right now if you were being genuine at the selection table it could very well be him out for a McInerney.

I think playing Blakey in Lloyd’s position could be a real unlock.

Take away a major liability out if defence, add some spark and unpredictability up the ground, and improve our contested marking down the wing.

Blakey could still help bring the ball out of defence when we get stuck, and actually this would probably help him get a looser leash when we really need back there.

OK.
Mad genius/complete idiot observation.

Lloyd was playing on the wrong wing v Collingwood, which significantly led to his slow/uncertain play.

When he plays on the 'far' wing (in relation to the broadcast side) he will generally move the ball quickly, most commonly on the 45, but happy to go inside/outside and indeed run with the ball, before unloading.

On Friday night he played wide and didn't have the confidence to take the game on, instead far too often going sideways/backwards.
For a right footer if anything his position v Collingwood should have been advantageous, but clearly his performance was below par.

I also noticed Roberts pushed further up the ground (spent 72% of the game in the fwd half, 28% def half) and I think this also impacted Lloyd's positioning, pushing him higher and wider.
And indeed in Q4 it was Roberts high/wing,Lloyd back, although again on the left flank.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Lloyd HBF, Roberts wing come this week.

( I acknowledge there will be concerns regarding Roberts pace, but the way the game is played these days I don't actually think it is a major issue. A lot of wingers these days are more the endurance athlete and the speed often will be generated from the flankers down back).

I'll be interested to see which wing/flank Jake lines up on this week and whether there is any validity in this breakthrough research/absolute nonsense.

Didn't notice Roberts but saw the same re Lloyd. Florent also back quite a lot. Thought our structure across half back was pretty ordinary. Both Pies wingers were giving us a bath, in my mind highlighting Lloyd and Florent's defensive issues. Perhaps Roberts and Bice were moved forward to try to stem the bleeding?
Also possibly absolutely nonsense.

I really feel like I've been watching a different player to everyone else. I still see a very intelligent player who constantly finds the right position to receive the ball and then use it well (despite lacking penetration in his kicking). He was in to the top 5 on ground against North imo and maybe poor by his own standards in the other games while still clearly best 23. Had a stellar season last year so lets give him a chance this year before writing him off.

No idea which stat you're trying to highlight here to be honest so I don't know how to answer your question. As I said... The North game.
The game where he was the lowest rated player player on the ground. Might be time for you to get glasses if you thought he was in the top 5 Swans for the game.

Ah yes... those rating points. The ones that had 5 Swans in the top 7 yesterday. Hayward as the third best on ground, and McLean worse than all but two Swans.

When you project this assessment as definitive, it's no real surprise you respond in the manner you do.

In the game on the weekend

Lloyd was third for TOs in the game an 4th for clangers alongside having the 8th most disposals for only the 14th most metres gained.

In the game against Collingwood he was 15th for possessions but 33rd for metres gained

He doesn't do anything with the footy and is hurting the Swans.

Been a fantastic player of the rookie list no doubt but like Rampe imo he is finished
Yep his numbers and efficiencies are basically all down 20%, much like we were having this conversation about Wicks last year they need to get him out of the side because he is down on his best. Bloody hell he can give service to our talls in the VFL to finish out his career
