Jake Lloyd

Player Profile

Jake Lloyd is a ball magnet, an endurance machine, a clean user of the footy and a calming influence on the Sydney Swans’ half-back line. The former rookie-listed Swan averaged 27.22 disposals per match between 2016 and 2019 and won the club’s 2018 Bob Skilton Medal. Lloyd became the quickest Swan in history to reach 100 senior games when he ran out against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8, 2018. He was then recognised as one of the best players in the league when he was selected for Victoria in the State of Origin match for bushfire relief in February 2019. Draft history: 2013 Rookie Draft selection (Sydney) No. 15; 2014 AFL Draft rookie elevation (Sydney).

Talk about providing the blueprint for what to do when you're dropped.

Don't sook or get in your own head over it. Go to the VFL, kick arse, get your spot back, and adjust your game to do the things you weren't doing before.

The process very rarely goes that smoothly but I guess that is why Lloyd's made it to over 250 AFL games. He's a total pro.

Just needs to not get complacent now. Perform like today and he's best 22 every day of the week. Play with a bit of urgency and confidence and no one will give a shit if he misses a shot at goal or shanks a kick here or there.
As I mentioned elsewhere Jake warmed up with the forwards and played further forward than he had been and I think it gave him more licence (maybe in his head?). Much better.

I said a while ago that I suspected Lloyd was as much a victim of our slow transition as he was a cause of it. He was definitely in a slump but I think it was exacerbated but our poor play in general. Hopefully he still has a couple of good seasons in him

His heatmap makes me think you are spot on about it mainly being in his head, because he basically had the typical Lloyd game in terms of his position and where he won it. He just had such a different attitude with what he wanted to do with it, in terms of taking the game on, trying to be creative, and sneaking forward a few times.

Disappointing that Dean Cox cost this guy a shot at the Coleman Medal by wasting him in the back half.

Showed his footy smarts yesterday. Worth their weight in gold.

True but he did deserved to be dropped, keep him out defence. Wing/forward .

Yes it's only three games and not much of a sample, but I really really love Lloyd in this forward role he's had since coming back into the team.

I might be seeing things but I feel like Lloyd in this role might help Hayward to get involved a bit more. Having another player with a great tank who Hayward can rotate with now, one pushing up to help out down the line, the other staying deeper as an option inside 50. Could just allow Hayward to go wherever he wants and do whatever he wants because Lloyd's covering his position and getting loose inside 50.

Or maybe not, who knows.

Just pick the side on its merits and credit to Cox he did and credit to Lloyd he has responded

This is what I'm thinking too, Lloyd's elite tank is being used both ways & he's catching his opponent out with his forward runs. A bit like Hayward with his defensive/unrewarded runs getting up high then running back to goal. His set shot kicking looks good too. Maybe also less pressure on his disposal knowing a mistake shouldn't result in a direct goal.

From your now deleted post of exactly a month ago;
We have made up our minds on 7 senior listed players already that will be tapped on the shoulder/ retire , delisted or traded

And an extract from a lengthy Sparklepunts post 9 day ago;
Lloyd won’t get offered a contract

Let me guess things change.
Or of course no decisions might have been made and your source was merely guessing, because Lloyd had been dropped and many expected his time was up.

Was it Sparklelord? Loved his/her work. Not prolific. But he/she had genuine craft. You almost had to believe it even if you didn't.

Reasonable possibility as playing forward possibly counterbalances Lloyd's defensive weaknesses as long as he isn't trapped inside 50 trying to apply pressure. As part of a "barrier" around HF with help at hand he should be OK. He's smart enough and spent time on the wing before being shunted down back to do the kick-ins so it's not foreign territory.
Can't think of a time I ever imagined Hayward and Lloyd with 6 between them but there you are.

i always remember when Lloyd came into the reserves. I have written this before years ago. When he was defending he had his hand on the player. As soon as the ball was in Swans hands he was 20 metres away demanding the ball.

He is built like a twig. It makes no sense having him defend.
It makes much more sense having him on a wing or whereever he has space. He knows how to use space better than most. He is clean on getting the ball. He knows how to get into space. He can also deliver. I like him more forward. I will still back him in to kick a goal.
