Retired #49: Matt Dea - calls it a day, retiring at season's end - 2/9

Dea can easily be exposed. This is his greatest weakness. He can play a disciplined role and occasionally do something impressive but his natural football and athletic limitations means that if the opposition is controlling the midfield and he’s on a clever opponent he could have his pants pulled down. Very glad we have him as go-to in times of need though. If Ridley, or (praise be) Franga came on in their development this year to replace him it would be the perfect scenario.

Just on this, Dea played 3 games of TAC football before being drafted and hadn’t played before.

He comes from a basketball background with excellent athleticism, albeit doesn’t seem so on the field.

A natural athlete first, footballer second.

That is interesting. He doesn’t move through traffic notably or have any seemingly amazing attribute such as a Hardingham-leap at the ball, McKenna-speed off the mark. I assume he has endurance athleticicism and was an excellent javelin thrower.

Late withdrawal against the Dogs...

"Mild boney stress in his fibula". Couple of weeks.

Fellow defender Matt Dea was a late withdrawal from the loss to the Bulldogs and is set for a stint on the sidelines.

“Matt Dea had some leg pain, we ended up withdrawing him from the squad,” Crow said.

“When we investigated that he had some mild boney stress in his fibula, the bone on the outside of his leg.

“What we’ll do in this case is we’ll give him a couple of weeks off feet and build him up reasonably quickly over a couple-week period to basically give the bone some time to cool down and then build him back up to play.”

Progressing well, possible return date of the Melbourne game (if we're desperate), otherwise the week after.

Fellow defender Matt Dea is also tracking well in his recovery from a leg injury and could be available within the next fortnight.

“Matt Dea’s progressing well, he’s had a couple of running sessions.

“Obviously we’re managing a low-grade bone stress issue in his fibula.

“He’s doing very well, he’ll be ballpark available for the Melbourne game if we need him, but most-likely the following week.”

I like Dea. He's a good depth player. The kind of game that might play 3-5 games each year for years. I doubt we'll see him become a regular but there are worse players out there and I find him to be pretty reliable.

As long as he keeps the number 49, if he gets a number upgrade I want him out immediately

I had high hopes too. He is a worry.
He is what he is...has a crack, makes to many mistakes, ok depth. If Franger was two weeks further along I don’t think we’d be seeing him.

That said, he’s unconditional with his effort and not many others are right now.
