Worth getting? How much better are they?

4K-video-resolution-comparison1.jpg

There's barely anything that supports 4K at the moment so you might be better off waiting for them to drop in price if you can. 4K Blu-rays should be out by Christmas this year or early next year.

Problem is lack of content. And for the short term it's going to be very expensive to shoot in 4K so it might be a little while before there is enough content to justify.

I'll be getting a new TV shortly, just seems like getting one of these would be the smart thing to do rather than buying a lesser TV and being behind everyone else in a few years.

Unless you upgrade every couple of years I'd be waiting, they're still working out formats and it sounds like there's some tech advancements that may happen before they settle on something.

With 4K TV's there's already LED (Cheapest), Quantum Dot TV's (Coming Soon, better quality and more expensive) and OLED (Not sure if they sell it yet, best quality but most expensive). It'll be interesting to see which type of 4K TV becomes the standard.

I think a lot of that is basically like LCD vs. Plasma and won't effect standards too much, there are some other more behind the scene things they seem to be trying to work out. This thread on Whirlpool has a bit of info on it.

Just making the point that even 1080p is not yet a standard broadcost resolution.

If you buy a 4k tv now to future proof i bet you'll be replacing it before 4k broadcasts become readily available.

4k tvs are the spiritual successor to 3D tvs in the gimmick stakes... Remember those?

Hi resolution 4k & 5k computer monitors are a completely different situation altogether... Increased productivity, gaming content, youtube content....

And don't forget competing formats, where one always becomes redundant through competition. HD DVD format vs Blu-Ray. VHS vs BETAMAX...

So you're saying wait and see if the pr0n industry adopts 4k...

I don't think 4K is a gimmick but yeah it's better to wait price wise and quality wise.

Pointless unless you're going to be watching 4K content. Downscaled 1080p looks shit.

Computer monitors are a whole different story, however it's still another few years yet until 4K becomes mainstream with television (if it ever does).

I don't want to buy a TV more regularly than every 5 years, just want an upgrade before the footy starts. It would suck a bit to just get a Full HD LED 3D Smart TV now and in 18 months everyone else has 4K UHD.

That's how it is with technology. There's no such thing as future proofing a technology purchase. No such thing.

There is always something new around the corner, regardless of whether we like it or not. I purchased a new phone in August, knowing that the iPhone 6 was only a month away, and that the newer model of my phone was due to be released within the next 12 months.

Barely anything is even produced in 4K yet. You're going to pay a premium for a big resolution and you're not going to be able to benefit from it. You'll need to spend big on a TV if you want one that'll support 60 frames in the future, too. Connectivity at this point in time is awful, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort still aren't standard. The worst part is that upscaled 1080p content looks shit.

If you're looking to upgrade, just get a big 60 or 70 inch 1080p TV. I can almost guarantee that 1080p will still be used in 5 years time, just like the 'HD TV' resolution of 1366x768 is now.

You need to make a choice then, buy something 4K now and hope there aren't any major changes when content and players come out, or live with 1080p and see what comes up. Bear in mind if there's another standards war then things are going to be delayed anyway, and good luck bring able to steam 4K content in Australia for a while

4K Blu-rays are at least one year away (if not longer in Australia), who knows if/when Foxtel goes to 4K content and Channel 7 still haven't made the leap to 1080p AFL yet. If you have to get a TV now, you'd be better off going for a 1080p TV and upgrading to 4k down the road whenever the content gets released and when 4K TV and blu-ray players get to a decent price.

The AFL is still on standard definition, as well as many other things. Things are still catching up to 1080p!

You'll struggle big time to find 4K content, and it definitely won't be enough to justify the extra cost.

Also, in regards to streaming, Australian internet is fairly third world so steaming in 4K...urgh

So on the contrary, with a 4K tv you will be ahead of everyone for a significant period of time. By the time 4K content is widely available, probably in say 6 years time, the 4K tvs will be much cheaper and also much better than any you can buy now.

I would get a nice quality 1080p one for now and enjoy!
