I don’t see them as an offender though, it seems like you’re trying to frame them as a nasty person whos unhinged. This is not a scenario many people are used to , trying to hold things together would be extremely hard. It’s also extremely common for people in rural properties to have guns and to use them to kill snakes so I don’t really have an issue with this scene. They may not have even seen the crew there when they had the gun out and it triggered them and rightly so.
I guess I’m just being more empathetic than others to this situation and rather than going down a rabbit hole of him being abducted or killed by the family I’m believing that he has simply wandered off and they haven’t been able to find him yet.
How did they not see the DM crew coming?
6 gates and red dust from the car?
So can it be said Grandma Shannon might not have seen a car on the way to the house the day Gus disappeared?

People coming through your gate and up the driveway in the country are either family/friends or straight out enemies.
My dear brother usually walks out onto the verandah in the nude or jocks with his empty shotgun and it paid off.
The reporters would probably be grateful Josie wasn’t naked or in jocks😄
Tensions are high now in this family (even between family) and I think best safer than sorry.

Why do I get the feeling the Murray's could be sovereign citizens?
Am wondering if Gus's dad waa met with the same reaction when he was banned from the property.

Not in the dams, not on the property, and no talk of abduction.
What's next, what's left?

We only have a snippet of video to go on. But a person whose immediate response to a snake is to grab a shotgun (presumably loaded or ineffective)

Tell me you’re from the city without telling me you’re from the city

My father in law who retired in to sheep farming, tried telling me once when I was looking at some holes in a tank off the back verandah that he shot a snake - with his "rifle".

It had a heap of pellett holes in it!

I don't think he wanted us to know he'd bought a shotgun, but if he was shooting at a snake with it (guffaw) he learned his lesson with the repairs.

Even if you hold a licence, pointing or waving a shotgun to threaten someone is not a lawful use and will very likely lead to criminal charges (and your licence being revoked) in SA.
I just caught a bit of the footage, but it looked like she was carrying a gun and waving a finger at the journo. We don't know if the shotgun (or the finger) was loaded.

I don't go out on my verandah in my jocks with a shotgun to greet anyone, not even friends or family 😁
Not even Jehovah’s witnesses?

In regards to the shotgun, I do hope the police did their due diligence and made sure gun laws were abided by, eg secure gunsafe, license etc etc.

Same, because I just looked at the Daily Mail footage again and I do think she lifted the gun to make sure the reporter could see it as she emphasised "Get out!" if I accept Daily Mail shouldn't have been in there bothering them.

Oh so there's snakes about yet they thought it was fine to leave a 4yo kid alone outside unsupervised for half an hour where snakes are present. OK.
Us country people are tough

At four years old living out there, he'd know what they were I think and know to stay away from them.

At that time of day the snake would most likely be hiding and not on the move. Also brown snakes don’t hunt people down they look to escape.

Mostly they're trying to avoid people I think, I've seen a few over the years and never had one go for me.

Except for this massive Taipan in Qld but it had been run over in the mid section before I came across it and it tried to strike. Poor thing, it was horrible.

Yeah I’ve done a venomous animals course, the guy had pretty much every venomous Australian snake and put them on the ground in front of us to show us what they do and also how they react when agitated. Great course, need spare undies to do it though.

Most snakes are protected in South Australia.

Also seems a bit silly trying to hit a snake on your porch with a scatter gun.

All snakes in SA are protected unless they’re trying to attack you.

Interesting to note that apart from a whip snake, all SA snakes are all quite venomous.

How do they behave when theyre hiding away and are disturbed by an inquisitive 4 yo?

One of my non foul play theories is that at that time of evening snakes would be settling in to hide away for the night. Given the size of Gus he could have been bitten in an area it would be easy to overlook or not notice a small body. Whether that be close to the house or further away.

The brown snake supposedly has one of the least painful bites which is why many people become unsure if they’ve been bitten or were just scratched by a stick as they aren’t in a lot of pain straight away. Other snakes however are very painful.

If he was just playing in the sand as reported it is unlikely at that time of day the snake would be just slithering around. Obviously if he’s poking around and lifting things up that’s a completely different scenario.

That was just the last time he was seen. Who knows what he got up to. Logic dictates if he got up from the sand pile to wander off it was likely toward something or something piqued his interest.
