If speculation is troubling the family, I guess they could arrange for a (carefully written) statement to be published or read out on their behalf? That would remove the 'body language' interpretation. It could clearly state the family's position.
I don't see how that makes it 'harder' for the cops - the cops could review the statement and edit out anything they don't want said publicly.
The silence is not exactly 'helping' anyone at the moment. Certainly not Gus.

You know people would be smashing the buttons ringing Crimestoppers making reports, they'd be flooded with thousands of likely useless pieces of information.
This far in and unless it changes, the police position is that Gus is lost in the outback.
