Given our hard draw (2 trips to Adelaide, trip to Brisbane, 3 of last years top 4)
I think that we have done damn well so far this year, yes we were very poor today, but I think we have set ourselves up for a very good shot at September action when few gave us a chance pre-season

I think that most of us would have been happy being 2-7 after 9 rounds knowing that we had a hard draw and a brand new forward structure

A few of us were optimistic that we would be 3-6 and could push on from there... but to be 5-4 after 9 is a damned good effort and I am pleased with how things have gone on.

It will be interesting to see how the backend of the season goes now. If we can win 2/3 of our next 3 matches, we are into the back straight at 7/5 and looking good for a finals berth.

certainly we are FAR ahead of what MOST people thought we would be. it's ok to be happy with that, but it has to be seen in the light of a very bad loss that happened against the hawks.

we will need to be much better later in the year unless we just want to make up the numbers.

The extreme optimist in me was hoping to be 5-4 after 9 rounds, but the realist thought 4-5 would have been a best case scenario.

We will most likely be 9-4 or 8-5 when we reach the mid-season break, which sets us up for a Final 8 finish & potentially a home final.

We are already a lock for finals, and with a PILE of players to come back into our 22 and a soft draw coming up Top 4 is still a real possibility.

Their is no soft draw coming up, with the competition being so even. We could easily get beaten next week and the following 2 games. And who are those players coming back!!

As soon as I heard we were favorites I had that sinking feeling, that's the thing we need to really sort out and quickly. But I will take the two wins over the two best sides in the competition and 5-4 is pretty good as the draw is starting to ease up a little for us from now on.

Glass half-full:
We are a lot better placed than we all thought at the start of the season.

Glass half-empty:
We probably should have had another win or two

That's how I see it.

No doubt, that at the start of the season 5-4 would of been taken by pretty much all Carlton supporters.
Still our next 5 games are all games we should win. Consistency is the big thing, still haven't ruled out a top 4 shot, but we need to be able to put out our best team on the park.

Same as last season then?

We stuffed a few games up - should be 8W 1L. No matter. Early H&A still. No point peaking now. Plenty of time to fine tune things and get players back from injury. All looking very good at this stage.

:)

I appreciate you guys are going to be a bit sensitive around here so take this as well as you can. I just read the result and though WTF and came looking around to find out what happened.

To the point, I seriously reckon you've undersold yourselves this season. I had Carlton top 8 for sure despite the loss of Fev. I just thought the midfield and running players would be good enough for 8-5 spot easily. Obviously today is a bit of a hiccup but the big picture still looks pretty good for Cartlon IMHO and you'll play finals no probs. Keep the chin up. WC next week and Melbourne the following with no travel. No reason you shouldn't be 7-4 going into the second half of the season and that's not too shabby at all.

Yeah but it won't mean anything if we only play 1 final and lose it. We had a chance really to be 9 wins and 3 loses by round 2 and eying second position possibly. We had 4 possible winnable games. We only have 3 of 4 now as Freo will be a hard team to beat.West Coast,Kangaroos and Melbourne we should beat them but all 3 can play at times. We had a great chance and we have slipped up a bit.We need to win those next 4 to keep that top 4 alive.

I think we're in a better position then we would have been if we lost to Saints/Geelong and beat Hawks/Essendon. .. Its just a bit of inconsistency and proof our depth isn't as good as we hoped. .. We showed our best is good enough, just time to consolidate, recover and gain consistency and we're in a good place. ..

I don't think any realistic supporter could be genuinely disappointed with where we are at at the moment.

A win-loss record of 5-4 after 9 rounds and sitting 6th on the ladder is a very good outcome considering our circumstances.....mainly being the transition into a post-Fevola era and our very hard draw.

Of course it is disappointing to lose games that the majority of people thought that we should and will win but it is far from the end of the world. The Essendon and Hawthorn games were shocking performances and I have no doubt that this season we are better teams than both of them but what is done is done. After all, how many really thought that we'd beat both of last years grand finallists, both by convincing margins?

This is the main issue with young teams - consistency. We will lose some games that we probably should win, but we will also lose games that we probably should win. At the end of the day it all evens out in that regard and as supporters we cannot harp on the negatives too much. We just need to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

After 9 rounds, whilst we have certainly experienced some disappointing losses, we have almost secured our spot in the finals for 2010. If we don't finish 4th, it doesn't matter. Just as long as we get back in the 8 again where this club belongs. From there, anything can happen.

Essendon made the finals last year with 10 victories, and this year I'd say 11 will get you in. That means we need to win at least 6 of our next 13 games to make the 8.

Looking at our draw, I'd say that is most definitely achievable.

IMHO, this is precisely what teams do before they truly challenge for the top of the ladder/premiership. They win games they shouldn't, and lose games they shouldn't.

Yesterday was very frustrating, but had a real air of predictability about it, too. Hawthorn, clearly underachievers of the year to-date are getting beaten from pillar to post in the media... but there's is still a list of depth and quality. They have more stars than we do. AND they've done very very well against the Blues in recent history. All signs pointed to it being far closer than recent form would suggest. Unfortunately, it wasn't close, as we failed to fire a shot for the entire afternoon.

It was a dog of a day, and all efforts rendered fairly futile after we were 2 down on the pine 1 quarter in. Teams don't really win from there very often.

Anywho... yesterday was disappointing, but 5-4 after 9 I'd have taken pre-season, and I'll take now. Must learn from these defeats, though, if we want to be a 8-1/7-2 team after 9 in coming years, which we have the potential to be.

Pretty good really, looking at that at seasons start most fans would take it! We beat both of last years grand finalists easily & dropped a few we shouldnt have to our bogey teams?! We have a decent run in the next 4 games all in Melbs. He have had Juddy missing for 3 weeks & now waite for 2, that along with some decent injuries to key personal & I'm very happy!

Having had Bower the Power (lol) out for 7 weeks in total is a huge loss but has given White the chance to come in & flourish, same goes with Hammer & getting some run into 206 & some cracking games outta Sauce!

Our forward line has gelled (spelling?) well most of the time, Armfield has stepped up out of nowhere, Setants & Russell have continued to grow. Jamo is amazing. We may also have seen a few players that will not make it much further on our list. The fact that Wiggins hasnt even had a look in this year shows us we have much more depth (no offence wiggo). Kane Lucas looks at home. Im happy, could be happier but also could be disappointed which i'm definitely not!

Keep up the good work boys!!

It's kind of obvious to some sane person that the 1 key didn't operate when i wrote 12 not 2.This is possibly because the pr0n i was watching before online that you were the leading star made me drop my Scotch on my keyboard. This making the contacts rather sticky.:thumbsu:It was really just liquid i tell you as i just was curious on how the other half lived .I needed to find out as i was going to have a oral presentation in class on the subject. The Visual Aids on my PowerPoint Presentation would ensure me of a A+ grade mark.
