Free Agent # 6: Joe Daniher - derp Brisbane player

yeah that seems true. Convince a guy to come to your club, but if you have trade for him you are no longer interested. They see Joe potentially being the key to a dynasty, they’ll trade for him if we match.

A few other interesting points in the article (who knows how accurate)

- Joey wants to play more ruck with Brisbane to get further down the ground. Brisbane want to play him purely as a forward.

- Fagan has had to reassure the other forwards in the team (mentioned McStay and Hipwood) that they’ll still in their plans for 2021 and they don’t instead to replace them.

I get the impression that the Lions view this as a decent get, but not an amazing achievement to land Daniher.

Edit - not saying that Daniher is amazing. But it’s interesting to see it. To Essendon, Daniher is a centrepiece it seems. To Brisbane, a handy addition.

It sounds like they're taking him because he wants out and he's cheap (relatively speaking), not necessarily because they want him or see a need for a player like him in their team.

If they shoehorn him into a traditional role then I doubt they get the best out of him. He's a really bizarre sort of player, doesn't fit into a traditional mould and needs a team built strong enough around him to let him off the leash. It doesn't sound like they're prepared to do that at this stage, but if he gets his body right maybe they'll reconsider. Otherwise, it is his career to gamble on. They're way closer to a flag than we are anyway, so maybe he'll get lucky.

Future 2nd in a strong draft would be risky with us most likely finishing towards the bottom. It will almost be worth a 1st round pick, I’d rather on trade what ever we get for Fantasia - pick 40 odd.
Yes but you are not the Carlton list manager :p
I would rather just take pick 7 but I am looking at it in more in what is likely to happen.

Is there any evidence suggesting he has not already got his body right?

Personally not convinced of his durability, 4 games with a rest in the middle, and his most notable game was the first one (the rest was due to a short turn around yes). He still has all of his other attributes and athleticism though.

I understand why some may not be convinced yet, but there's no evidence to the contrary. The rest was a game 5 days after he just played two games in 4 days. His last quarter with us he played ruck with all his athleticism and no impairment whatsoever.

I don’t think he’s strung together three consecutive games for years, so I’m hesitant to believe it.

He played 4 games in 3 weeks which is 4 games in a row in a normal season (or close enough if you count 23 days from first to last of the 4 games).

Again, I get why people are hesitant to believe it. My point is there is no evidence that he is not over it.

Doesn’t matter, he’s personally checked the Lions medical staff and stamped his approval...although he did point out some deficiencies in bone diagnostic spectrum dialysis integration techniques but they were able to sort that out

Going to be interesting to see if we try and match the Lions bid. Personally, I hope we don't just in case Bris get cold feet and wont trade.

Joe would still probably go to any NSW or QLD club in that situation. It’s just posturing. We should match if it’s not band 1, then not be too demanding at trade table.

(I come in peace)

I could be wrong, but I think in this case Essendon have to agree to match the offer before knowing what the compo is. They will have to make an educated guess based on the contract being offered to him.

The AFL give the current club of the player leaving (Essendon) an indication of the compensation band they would receive, at least they have for every RFA so far. Essendon can then choose to match. Joe could then say he will stay (unlikely) and then we have effectively re-signed him. If Joe still doesn't want to stay, then it's just a normal player out of contract trade or PSD threat situation.

If reports are true and it's not band 1, I would think we will match and what happens happens. If it is band 1 I'd hate us to match.

If it’s band 1 I’m sure we won’t match, but that means a very risky guaranteed contract from Lions. Other side of it is they don’t lose draft picks as they would if a traded was needed.

It's an interesting message to Joe if they don't offer him enough of a contract to trigger band 1 AND refuse to trade for him. Effectively: "Joe, you're not worth our time, money or assets".

Do the bidders have a right to reply?

Brisbane offer A (band 2)
We match with B
Brisbane up offer C to seal the deal (band 1) no trade
No

Not 100% sure but off the top of my head I don't believe so, I vaguely remember something about the AFL not wanting that as clubs should be offering straight up what they think the players is worth.

Joe Daniher would be left alone in rooty hill and might be a fair replacement for Jeremy Cameron.
a gws trade would suit us way more.
i hope there is a band one compo and we let him go.
once this trade and draft period is over recriminations and decisions are made over the inept handling of Daniher 2019

im not sure meeting Harley is dishonest. If you want to say unethical maybe though I don’t agree.
Didn’t he secretly meet with Tom Harley in Sydney? On our dollar because we’d flown him up there for a specialist appointment? And was only caught because a GWS player spotted him going into Harley’s house?

So honest.

I kinda want us to match for the meltdowns 😂

More from the Dodoro obsessees... I don’t mind Brisbane and their supporters seem alright

He really elicits a strong response, lots of unwarranted vitriol. I wonder if he spends the year leading up to trade period going around and shagging their missus', that's the only way I can get my head around it.

If you’re Brisbane you surely just bump your offer to band 1 knowing it probably gets it done on day one and get it over with.

If it’s a trade I’d offer to take on any contract they don’t like to help clear space as an add on.

I don't buy this we're losing players we will be worse off.

Saad is the big one, but is he worth 4.5 wins to us?

Daniher hardly played, Fantasia has hardly played. Smith is a role player.
If Zac Merret request a trade then we have a problem and all future picks should be off the table.
