Wondering if Joe and management looking at option of sitting out last year of his contract? Therefore avoid a third breakdown on the field and be RFA and hope to secure long term deal. That way he avoids the risk of breaking down again, becomes uncontracted and no value/suitors.
Can't imagine the club allows that. We're already out a lot of $$ on his current contract.

Why would that be an incentive?

If he plays and re-injures his value plummets and he’ll be out of contract.
Both us and other teams will be very reluctant to sign on any long term deal.

If he stays out the year, he rests up, hasn’t broken down and is out of contract end of year. He and management give updates of training well throughout the year. Yes interested teams have him medically asessed but it’s a tough one to detect.

Maybe more likely of getting a longer contract.

This is all if his team has some doubts on next year.

Running backs in NFL get beat up a lot and have shorter careers and many won’t play final year without either renegotiate or ask for a trade to team that will.

Joe doesn't come across as money hungry. Just watch one interview he's done in the last ten years and you'll see this clearly. All this contract talk seems ludicrous. Id bet my house his passion is enjoying footy and sucess. Contract games doesn't seem his style. Seems like the kind of guy who would want to be an asset to his club rather than getting the millions and ****ing the club/clubs over. Seems obvious to me he either stays, quits footy because of injury/stress or goes north due to needing a fresh start. He's a very wealthy guy already. Think about it..

So, am I missing anything ?
From what I understand if Merret didn’t open his mouth and say he’s having time away from the club blah blah blah, which essentially prompted management to speak on the subject further than what was required, the only thing the media is running with is the fact Joe met with Harley ? If he decides to fulfil his contract
is it possible that we might not receive another update from the club?

Trying to understand the media beat up on this

Swans in the back ground feeding the media they believe they can get him despite the fact they have not officially made an offer. The media will not just run with anything now days. There is always a club or manager feeding the fire in the back ground. It does not always work out but it doess happen more often than it used to.

Not sure about that that. Yesterday they wrote about Ben Reid on the move, yet same day it's announced he's signed a one year contract.

Social media and the growth of the trade period has created this sort of monster where all these reporters are scrambling to be the first. I think some just go on hunches that may be from people connected with the club or even in the club, but not close enough to the people who actually work in trading & recruiting.

So why can't they get it right? Why is his so different to anyone else whos had groin issues?

How many players with groin issues do you know of that make a full recovery?

There was one who apparently made a full recovery after surgery, which is the same surgery Joe had a few months ago.

The expectations for recovery shouldn't be that high though, if we're basing it on everyone else who has had groin issues. His brother for one retired because of it, and he wasn't the first to do so either.

Merrett's comments have definitely fuelled the fire but they seem inaccurate (like everything in this story). Merrett said that Joe was taking time away from the club yet several sources have said he's been in the gym every day working on his rehab. I'm confused.

Players aren't required to be at the club at the moment, there's no formal training sessions or anything until pre-season starts. I'm guessing Merrett was referring to that.

Most of them are on holidays, although presumably those who are rehabbing injuries would still have appointments with medical/allied health staff and will need to use the club's facilities.

you can't buy mental health

Package him up and ship him off then as he'll deeply regret whatever choice he makes by the sounds of it.

Get them nice picks :thumbsu::thumbsu:
