only if you don't know what a sensational captain looks like.

I love the Ponting bashers.

Firstly, he was only ever made to look like a good Captain by Warne/McGrath; then, when missing them through injury, he was lucky to have such a strong batting lineup (of which he was the dominant performer).

Then, when those 2 all time greats (and a few more) retired and we kept performing well, people still heap shit on him.

Tell me why Ponting is a poor Captain.

He lost a couple of ashes series.

Not that i'm complaining. :)

And really, that is the biggest black mark against him, and deservedly so.

The home Saffer loss was the result of poor Selections, and the last Ashes loss was influenced by them as well.

He makes stupid decisons in the field which have directly resulted in some losses.

I don't think anyone disagrees about how gifted a cricketer he is, but as a captain he is relatively poor compared to previous Australian captains.

Anyway off-topic, no more discussing how bad Ponting is :)

I fear we've veered way off topic

Edited for accuracy. :p

amer has reminded me that I did do a double take when the 2010 leadership group was announced. At that time it was "2010 is our year, in (pick one or more: the AFC, Neil Craig, Matt Rendell, the game plan, our fitness, the playing group, our depth) we trust. So I didn't question what surprised me a little. The lack of development , or succession in the leadership group.

Vader says the need for backbone representation has gone. I don't agree. Yes, that group have developed, and Rutten, Symes and VB are in the LG. But 2 of those three were part of the establishment already, and the new boy, Brad Symes, is 25. The youngest of them, Nathan van Berlo, is nearly 24. And there are only 17 players older than VB on the list.

That leaves 24 senior players and 5 rookies, over 60% of the list who may feel they have little voice on the LG.

If we had a Captain / Vice Captain set-up that wouldn't matter, but we have a group of 8, all from the oldest 40%. That matters.

So does the suggestion that Roo is talking to the current LG and other players "out-of-school". It's fine for him to express views contrary to the match committee on the media - that is a public forum, and he's paid for it. Much as I have admired him and what he has done for the club in the past, it is way out of line for him to get in the player's ears in private with his views.

Even though I agree with those views, if it is true that he has expressed them at the Alma to current team members I can't condone unstabilising the club in this manner.

It's definitely a concern that our leadership group of 8 contains 5 of our 6 oldest players (with McLeod being the only exception). There's a very strong possibility that at least 3 of these players won't be on the list in 2011, which could potentially lead to a gap in the team leadership.

VB had always been earmarked as the next leader of the pack. He was the first of the Neil Craig draftees to become a regular member of the senior team and he's been representing the post-Ayres generation ever since.

That leaves Rutten & Symes - and Symes hasn't been on the paddock since being appointed to the group.

It is a little disappointing that none of the younger players have really stuck up their hands in this regard. I guess that will change in 2011 when Goodwin steps down and the elder leaders begin to drop off the team list.

As to whether or not Roo's perceived influence on the team leadership is an issue... I still regard him as the greatest Captain the club has ever had.

I have always thought good leadership is made up of different components but that merge. By this I mean there there is something in the personality which will make a good leader of men, and this can morph into a particular kind of playing ability..the ability to influence an outcome. If you have one the other follows.

Look at some of the great captains going around...J Brown, how often do we see him impose himself on a game and drag Brisbane with him. Judd did it on Saturday. And what about Nick Maxwell of the Pies, not the greatest player but who was it that put himself in the guts at that last bounce in THE semi final? He willed himself to the contest, got the clearance and the rest is history. Pavlich, Riewoldt....and before the current bunch of course there was the likes of Roo (who could forget the carlton game at Princess Park), James Hird.

As much as Goody has been a great of the club and I do not for one moment criticise his ability nor his contribution over many years. But he is simply not this type of player. He is consistent, gets plenty of it and uses it well...but I cant ever recall him sinlge handedly dragging us over the line...breaking a game open.

In my opinion there is one man on our list who has that kind of potential and he should be made captain next season....Dangerfield.

Its taken awhile but I finally find myself agreeing with Southern in that VB is the only real logical choice for captaining the club for the next few years. My man, Thommo, seems abit disinterested to be captain material. VB seems to be really passionate about the club and his teammates.

Goodwin doesn't have the on field toughness/presence to be a top captain. Surely, he must hand it over at the end of the year.
