Player Watch #7: Daniel Butler

Thought he was invincible today. Gave away silly free kicks (three if I recall correctly) and barely got his hands on it. Exactly why I don't think he should play round one. A total liability and we'll be carrying him even more when the real stuff starts. Was fortunate to get on the end of some Chol magic in the last quarter to save himself from embarrassment. Was Josh Smith his direct opponent? 29 touches he ended up with.
Was no where near as bad as Vlastuin,Lloyd or Cotchin early

Delivery into the forward half was putrid today. Hardly gave anyone a chance let alone an inexperienced small. He did have quite a few pressure acts though.
TBH anyone can notch up pressure acts. Do we really want to waste a spot in the best 22 for someone who barely offers anything outside of pressure acts?

Vlastuin was garbage (as I mentioned in the appropriate thread). Lloyd came off early I believe, but agree, was poor.
Rioli,Cotchin,Caddy,Prestia and even Martin were all crap in the first half

All did little things late but all too late, Not a game the above boys should be happy with, Butler was no where near the worst and not nice pointing just him out when the lot were crap

Soldo,Chol were impressive and looked like theres a bit to work with

Immature response. Every player on our list offers something. Some offer more than others. Butler does not offer enough to warrant a start at the moment.
I can't help it if you cannot see something that is there. Maybe that is just your immaturity. Don't worry, it will come someday.

I'm not going to call out our best players when they have absolutely nothing to prove. It's our fringe players that should be desperate to impress the coaches. They're the ones fighting for a spot and should be the focal point of discussion after these games. I don't expect you to follow all my posts but I've commented on a few players that were disappointing today in the appropriate threads.

I think Butler will play round one (even though I disagree with that decision) and I think that game will be telling.

Just like Rioli last year, when many could not see why he was getting games, others could see the benefit it would give in the future. Same with Butler.

Pity some people are too immature to have foresight. They think now is more important all the time.

Butler was / is a small foward

The ball never went into our foward line properly and when it did it was butchered

Edwards,Riloi , Castagna , Butler never had a chance to crumb or have a run at the ball as the ball coming inside was being cut off due to crap delivery

You really need to watch the game again,Butler was not our worst and not sure why your singling out a 20 kid with 0 games to his name

can only get better with all the senior game time Butler is racking up!
Not disagreeing with that but you could make that same argument for all of our youth. Just don't think he's a "lock best 22" as most on here suggest, but anyway I'm sounding like a broken now.

Edwards, Castagna and Rioli were all better than Butler today and they all suffered from the same service.

And again, haven't singled him out at all.

Well we will have confirmation of that come the opening rounds...

Edwards played mid quite a bit. Rioli did a little and wasn't that good either TBH. He did a few nice things but looked hampered. Butler was always played as a small forward. A very difficult position when you are getting a shellacking.

I don't think anyone is saying he is a lock best 22. He offers forward defensive pressure of which we have been bottom two in the last few years. He is fast and skilful. He just needs to be fast tracked.

Mate they would have probably an inch in it between them all with Edwards probably the best of the lot
Butler 10 touches 1 goal 2 tackles
Rioli 8 touches 1 goal 2 tackle
Castagna 9 touches 1 goal 3 tackles
Edwards 14 touches 2 goals 1 tackle
Caddy 13 touches 1 goal 2 tackles
Vlastuin 14 touches 0 goals 4 tackle and gave away 2 goals from free kicks

Cant see how you can pick out Butler out of all these players who have so much more games to their name mate

Your being extremely unfair to Butler

We aren't in a position to be fast tracking kids. We aren't Sydney. I understand the logic, but would you be for throwing Chol in instead of Griffiths? Where do you draw the line? If our season was over and we had nothing to lose then I don't mind us experimenting, but we should aim to win every game. The kids can develop in the VFL and get AFL exposure when they've earned it. I personally don't think he's done enough.

We wont be winning the flag in 2017 mate - If we are not looking to fast track kids like
Chol,Moore,Butler,Soldo,Castagna,Shai,Markov & Menadue
Griff,Hampson,Edwards,Hunt,Houli,Grigg are certainly not the answer

Do you think we will win the flag this year or even make top 4? I don't. That means I'd rather try kids that might improve us so we can get to that point in the coming years. Sure that means you might finish a little lower but that is the price you pay. I don't want to just make up numbers, I want to win a flag. Obviously you can't play all of them at once because that may destroy them psychologically.

I don't think players like Caddy, Vlastuin and Edwards really need to be scrutinised in these games. They've got the runs on the board and they're senior players. They have nothing to prove and were probably coasting.

Castagna was clearly better than Butler. He laid four tackles, won three free kicks and could've easily had three goals if he kicked straight. Rioli was quiet but lifted big time in that last quarter. Had moments of brilliance. I cannot say the same about Butler. A level above IMO.
