Player Watch #7: Daniel Butler

Pretty simple answer really, Lambert is currently better and is proven at AFL level. Not sure why you mentioned Hunt when he's a defender. If Butler plays good footy in the twos he should be rewarded accordingly. His VFL form from last season hasn't justified an AFL call up and I don't think we should gift players games based on small glimpses from the pre-season competition as it's hardly a good indication of form.

Develop them in VFL then reward them when they're banging down the door with undeniable form, not give them games on the back of some Micky Mouse competition. Butler hasn't done enough is what I'm saying. I can see him being a liability if we play him round one. Kane Lambert won us the game off his own boot in round one last season, yet everyone wants to shaft him (and others) for Butler. Laughable.
Lambert was close to useless towards the end of last year and in the half he played on Sunday. Butler should get a game ahead of him atm it's that simple.

He's not asking for much, just to read every comment in every post since the dawn of time...
I just hate that he is so upset.

I feel terrible.

Last year was last year...
At the moment Butler cant do anymore than he has...and as for Lambert he actually could do more...
Butler seriously needs consideration for best 22...

I get the distinct impression that the small forward brigade, in fact all the forwards for that matter, are being judged based on their defensive pressure almost as highly as they are on their ability to score directly. Butler, Rioli, Castagna, Lloyd and even Lennon are there to lock the ball into the forward fifty, win the ball back and ultimately create goals through assists or kicking them directly. Butler's speed, pressure and tackling pushes him higher up the peeking order than others. On the weekend he had the equal high amount of tackles.

I think at this stage, he will be hard to dislodge from the forwardline unless he has an absolute stinker on the weekend.

Our whole team was useless towards the end of last season bar maybe one or two. We'll see how Butler goes if he gets gifted a game. Prepare to be disappointed.

He can translate his pre-season form into VFL form and work his way into the side when a spot opens up for him because at present he isn't best 22. He's still quite low in the pecking order IMO.

Gifted? That's BS. He has been good to very good in the games he has played so far in a difficult position as a defensive half forward. He DESERVES a place in the 22. That's not gifting in anyones language. 2016 is irrelevant come round 1.

Maybe...Maybe not...
Will be interesting to watch his game against the Pies if he's picked...
If Butler keeps running hot as he has...going to be hard to deny him....

That's debatable. He was good against Adelaide but he was average against a weak Port Adelaide (was anonymous for most of the game).

Gosha I like you as a poster bc of your honesty and nous, but sorry you're wrong on this . Simple fact is Butler won't be gifted a game as he's bloody well earned it. His tackling and defensive pressure has been amazing coupled with his speediness skill and evasiveness. We talk about gifting games to Griff Hunt Lennon Lsmbert C/B Ellis Conca and Toensend. He's a walk up start on his work rate and form .

Lambert has proven he is definitely NOT good enough, Butler deserves a chance to show whether he is good enough.

Has lots of things that Lambert doesn't have, for example great speed and endurance and goal sense and tackling ability

I've said what I wanted to say about where I think he sits in terms of our best 22. If Butler does anything other than sweet f*** all in round one (assuming he is selected), then I'll cop it and admit I was wrong.

FWIW Lambert isn't in my best 22 either. Just highlighting how far down the pecking order Butler is in my opinion.

You probably haven't seen much of him , but IMO there are a lot of passengers on our list and if he misses out before them it would be a shame as his growth in confidence has been refreshing.
To me it's not about touches and SC points it's more about his development as an AFL player in readiness for when we decide to make our move in 2-3 years. We all know what CEllis Houli Grigg Townsend and co bring to the table and it falls short at the pointy end of the season. We need to put games into guys who want to play for the jumper rather than pick up a pay packet and to guys who can play in the jumper. I'm over watching Taylor Hunt Conca and CEllis looking like jack in the Beanstalk when he first sees the Giant. Sydney beat us in development hands down and they always pick up crumbs after us. Why? Bc just as they see players not taking the next step they get rid of them after two years , where we keep them on an intravenous drip for years hoping to resurrect them. This method may see them lose a Nskkers here and there , but there list is so advanced they have a cover.

There are a few on here over-rating Butler's performances in the JLT and a few under-rating them imo.... He's been solid, nothing more, nothing less. He is doing his job, creating pressure, trying to hit the scoreboard and link up on forward thrusts. In reality he needs to be averaging about 12-15 possies and 2 shots on goal a game in his position. Check Rioli's stats out from year 1 and you'll see that's not that easy.

I'm happy with the knowledge that when he gets a game (whether in round 1 or not) he'll acquit himself well in terms of effort and tenacity. He needs more polish but he'll get that with experience at the top flight. I worry that in big games early in the season, it might be too hot for him. However, he may step up. I like him but I'd have Castagna ahead of him at the moment due to scoreboard impact and just being slightly more comfortable (I do mean slightly) at the level (including pre-season games) than Butler.

I would not be upset in the slightest to have him, Castagna, Lloyd and Rioli in the same team buzzing at JR and Griff's feet....

Am a little bit with Gosha on Butler and I get what you are saying about Lambert. Butler has surprised me in particular because I thought he was useless in the one game I saw via ABC VFL TV. In fact he was a disgrace!

So from such a low base, it's easy to be amazed. Butler has been OK, has done a couple of sparkling things and many pedestrian things. I'd be expecting him to bang down the door at VFL level - I want to see some consistency of effort and application rewarded. Two JLT games that were OK by definition are not bangers! A very good game against Collingwood might be the tipper though, and it's not just about the games, it's showing when you train that you are applying the things being asked of you, repeat efforts, working on agility... whatever it is being set for you.

From all Reports Butler has had an excellent preseason in general.

And those "All Reports" are? I found Greenberg on the Club site say he had "an impressive body of work throughout the pre-season", which is good, but didn't expand. Dan himself is saying he's had limited preparations due to injuries in his previous two seasons, so fingers crossed he stays out of the medical room and can show us his "impressive body of work from the pre-season".

Being a Qlder I don't get to see much other than TV stuff, but his body of work at the Maroochydore Camp training days was OK, hardly impressive though. His 2 JLT's so far were as I suggested.

Be fantastic if he kept pushing hard, and surprised even his mediocre fans. Can't wait to see him in the real stuff if selected and will certainly be cheering his efforts.

Still think Corey Ellis should also be getting games

Dan Butler should be played because of the upside. But on the weekend I thought when the pressure was put on he was caught out by the speed of the players coming at him, the difference between playing VFL. Port's back line played well in the second half and Butler had some nice cameos but was unsettled by the pressure. As Gosha says, not automatic 22 at this stage but would much rather see him play before Lambert and co because he brings that speed and x-factor that we need.

At the same time during the game most of our players did not play well, so singling him out is a little unfair.

Just highlighting that the speed of VFL vs AFL takes a little getting used to. He hasn't even played a lot a VFL, well not in the thick of it i.e. midfield due to injuries and fitness. He'll be in the mix, but it won't be easy to pick a RD1 side because you have to balance between the established players vs the newbies and that balance is always difficult with an injury free list. He will get his chance and looks genuinely exciting, the same with Menadue who he is competing with. Good for the team development.

Thought he was invincible today. Gave away silly free kicks (three if I recall correctly) and barely got his hands on it. Exactly why I don't think he should play round one. A total liability and we'll be carrying him even more when the real stuff starts. Was fortunate to get on the end of some Chol magic in the last quarter to save himself from embarrassment. Was Josh Smith his direct opponent? 29 touches he ended up with.

Had a few friends today. Why don't you mention them? Some are a lot more experienced too.
