Player Watch #7: Daniel Butler

Personally I'd prefer Butler, but can see merit for both.

I think Butler & Rioli are a very balanced set of players (different strengths, 1+1=3etc). But maybe that will be he and George as Dan becomes a more permanent mid.

Agree

Rioli , Butler , Castagna , Lloyd , Edwards should all play round 1

Speed agility & X factor in the foward line alongside Jack would be amazing and just about all these smalls are interchangeable with Cotchin,Martin,Vlastuin,Caddy during rotations. If only we could make them all grow another 5-6 cm we would have the perfect fowardline/midfield setup

Really , didn't know teams were IN, sheds , Prestia and Houli all need to be accomodated ,
Lambert wont be in
Lennon wont be in
Townsend wont be in
Maric wont be in
C ellis and costagna will probably have to earn it in the vfl first
Theres 4 definites and 2 probables that wont be in before butler.

He gets a gig ahead of the following guys that played last week IMO

Towno
Markov
Cellis
Lennon
Maric
Lambo

easily plays rd 1 unless he has an absolute howler next week.
I actually wrote that 3 posts before apart from markov but thanks so much for your influence and reading of all posts. Awesome effort

I must be the only one not on the bandwagon. If we were playing a grand final tomorrow he shouldn't be selected as he's not best 22. He doesn't have the runs on the board. He has shown small glimpses in practice matches against two sides going at about 65% and that's it. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he only manages 6 - 8 touches and doesn't hit the scoreboard when the real stuff starts.

If we were playing a grand final tomorrow our entire list would have more quality then it currently does anyway. Pretty irrelevant point

FFS. Are you seriously nitpicking at that part of the post? Replace "grand final" with "important game" and my point still stands.

Does it though? Your point was he shouldn't be played as he isn't best 22, and doesn't have runs on the board. Players only get runs on the board by playing afl, and if they show signs such as butler has you give them an opportunity. Why would we play lambert and hunt types in place of players with upside?

How do these guys then develop if they aren't played in "important games?" The fact of the matter is that butler has been in our best 22 so far this pre season and should therefore play round one, runs on the board or not

Haha do you read every post. Wish I had your spare time.

Sorry if you're upset about it

Pretty simple answer really, Lambert is currently better and is proven at AFL level. Not sure why you mentioned Hunt when he's a defender. If Butler plays good footy in the twos he should be rewarded accordingly. His VFL form from last season hasn't justified an AFL call up and I don't think we should gift players games based on small glimpses from the pre-season competition as it's hardly a good indication of form.

Develop them in VFL then reward them when they're banging down the door with undeniable form, not give them games on the back of some Micky Mouse competition. Butler hasn't done enough is what I'm saying. I can see him being a liability if we play him round one. Kane Lambert won us the game off his own boot in round one last season, yet everyone wants to shaft him (and others) for Butler. Laughable.
