Jack Ziebell is racing the clock to be fit to face Gold Coast

JACK Ziebell remains hopeful of taking on Gold Coast on Saturday night, a clash when North Melbourne will be looking to their captain to help cover the loss of suspended midfield star Ben Cunnington.

Ziebell injured his right shoulder early in the fourth quarter of North's loss to the Western Bulldogs last Saturday night, but returned to the ground after having it strapped and played the remainder of the game.

North coach Brad Scott said after the match the initial diagnosis of Ziebell's shoulder suggested he "should be fine", noting the midfielder's ability to come back on the ground and take a strong overhead mark reinforced that expectation.

Ziebell is understood to have pulled up sore from the Bulldogs game, but has five days to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday night's match at Metricon Stadium.

On Tuesday morning, Cunnington was ruled out of the Gold Coast clash when he accepted a one-game ban for striking Bulldog Toby McLean.

Cunnington is the Roos' leading clearance and contested ball winner this year, and Ziebell, who is ranked second at the club in both categories, is best placed to pick up the slack.

Meanwhile, North's injury list is set to shrink this weekend.

Sam Durdin (concussion) is expected to return in the VFL, Jy Simpkin (AC joint) and Ben Jacobs (lower leg) could join him, while Lindsay Thomas will also play at some level after serving a one-match suspension.

Sam Wright (foot) and Corey Wagner (ankle) will also play for Werribee after pulling up well from their return games in the VFL last weekend.

So broken ribs, painful OP and now a sore shoulder?

"Should be fine"

* sake Brad, good way of running th captain into the ground. Give the battered bloke a rest on the side lines, our season is done

Your club should be asking for a public apology from the AFL after Viney was cleared for his bump on Hurn. Now I loved it and I thought he deserved no sanction but it highlighted how bullshit Ziebells was a few years back

After Tuesdays effort from Richmond (Houli tribunal, character witnesses) we've actually soughted out the Dalai Lama, Pope Jorge through the friendship vine just so we can get to know them for future reference.......but if theyve not got enough clout we're also going after Mother Teresa, Bambi , Lassi and last but not least Skippy the bush kangaroo via phsycics at the circus because everyone knows all of them are held in great reverence.

I've lost count of how many times he looks for a handball first but there's no runner to give it to.
hence our problem. there are never any runners, thats why spitta and cunners are often caught out as well, we have the extractors but there is nobody at the end of the chain, pretty obvious why we are chasing kelly.

Yes but we keep coming back to the same issue here - i.e. how did it end up this way?

How has the list been so mismanaged over the past 10 years that we end up with all the same types of players in the midfield? You couldn't do a worse job in selecting a 'mix' of midfielders than what we have done - no spread, no elite foot skills, no running power, no one over 6' 2. And worse we haven't even tried to mix it up by putting an Atley, Wood or such player in there - we just keep going with the same old Cunners, JZ, Swallow, Dumont types. Higgins improves it at the margin but just too little too late.

So the season is cooked and Ziebell is physically stuffed but we need to put him on a plane and play him this week - why?

Because Jack knows no other way.

He is the captain, he wants to play and the medicos will have to clear him of aggravating his current injuries.

There's no doubt Jackie Z can play. But it's his lack of run that's killing him. Does anyone know what he registers on the Beat Test?
I remember speaking to George Peel (who's good mates with the Pope) about this and he just kept saying that Jackie Z needed to exercise the Demons? I mean, WTF? We weren't even playing Melb that week!!!!
But one funny thing re George was that his favourite player was Dean McRae because he looked like the Pope. Every time McRae got the ball, George would bow his head and do the sign of the cross & mumble "Dei caro factum est" which he loosely translated for me as meaning "may this kick be blessed." I used to do this when Adam Simpson got the ball, but now I'm a grown man so I don't do it no more.

Cld not agree with you more Topkent
Was watching the Ds on the box, saw viney do wot he did, and thought that looked rather like JZ v the Bues a few yrs ago
shamefully inconsistent from the tribunal

Umm ... Wells, Harvey, Dal Santo just left. They were 3 fairly handy receiver types I would imagine. You don't replace these guys overnight, but you can aggressively re-set over 1-2 seasons.

Plus, we've recently drafted/ recruited exactly the type the pessimists like to whine on about us never drafting. Clarke, Hibberd, Mountford, Wagner, Simpkin, Williams, Hrovat, Ahern and Kelly ( ;) ) are all outside midfielders with some combination of the exact attributes being complained about us not having (speed, height and skill). Having just offloaded Wells, Dal and Boomer, there was always going to be a gap while those guys developed, but to claim as the likes of Shimaburns "Pep" agrieg and riper "Popeye" part like to about us "drafting the worst possible mix of midfielder" is just factually inaccurate.

So yeah, if you want to incessently hate on everything North ever does, call for us to tank and then demand every coach and player be sacked when we lose, or say we arent good enough and need to rebuild, and then refuse to acknowledge that we're resetting, kindly **** off and support someone else.

Ummm...why were we still relying on 32-38 year olds to be our running midfielders?.....As i said - poor list management and poor development of alternative midfielders whichever way you cut it.

The piper aways needs to be paid and given the reality of the above situation we are now looking to rectify this with around $15m in contracts to 2 class midfielders. I hope we land them.

Why is he always hunched over at a stoppage?
This yes!!!

One of my greatest frustrations with Jack. He always looks completely buggered, bent over, gasping for air. Generally he's got a couple of efforts in him and then the ball is down the other end, Jack bent over, hands on knees, looking longingly as the ball moves quickly away from him. Surely after all these years he can't be THAT unfit?

If he's got injuries then DON'T play him. He becomes a liability. My feeling is however is that he'll never be an AFL fit player.
