The last 5 or so Freo vs Geelong games at Subi have all been quality, 2008 (Postman Pav), 2012 and 2010 probably the pick of them.

2010 was the best of the lot IMO, Pavlich kicked 5 including a couple monsters from the centre square and Ablett had 30 touches and 4 brilliant goals for the Cats, all have gone right down to the wire too.

Still though you should probably pick the 2012 GF or Cats vs Hawks 2012, both are pretty much ideal games; high quality teams fighting desperately in front of large frenetic crowds and both had tense finishes.

Although it is a little old, I would show the 1989 grand Final.

Also the 1999 preliminary final between Essendon and Carlton.

And maybe the final where Nick Davis kicks 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to win the game for Sydney. I think it might of been 2005.

1999 Preliminary Final - Essendon V Carlton is probably my favourite game of all time. Such a tight and physical contest between two of the biggest AFL Clubs and absolute powerhouses at the time...

Show them the 2012 GF, there's been too many rule changes since 2011. You show them a game from 2011 and you might as well show them a game from 1971.

You want high scoring close games if you're going to show it off.
Cant go past Geelong Hawks battles, Drawn grand final, 2012 grand final without being spectacular was a great contest, the showdown from a couple of years ago when port battered us and we still got over the line, ANZAC 2012 or Zaharakis (2009?), even the PF from last year Adelaide v Hawthorn was an amazing game despite the result not going our way.

You're a Crows fan. Show them the the '97 grannie. Great game. Worth it for Jarman alone.

Avoid '98 as half of it is an absurd comedy of errors on the part of the Roos.
Rubbish. To this day the 98 grand final is my favourite non Geelong grand final. The skills of Jarman and McCleod that day were sublime. Far better than the 97 grand final.

Hey champs, on the way to the states for presumably the first of many times to meet the in-laws, cousins, other american creatures. We've already bought a footy for my nieces and nephew, but my wife is bloody keen to show a couple of games to her dad and a few others, convert them to the definitive sport created by humans.

I've already locked in the Collingwood/Hawthorn prelim of 2011, but not sure what to select as my other. Will take a few if need be. Anyone keen to throw down any recommendations?
Would not go near the Collingwood Hawthorn game. It had a great finish but was very ordinary for the first three quarters. Americans most likely would of stopped watching by the time it gets good.

89 GF, /thread

I suppose for the pafc side of things, the '04 prelim against the aints, either one our games against hawks or cats, the come back/last gasp winner games of 2007 home and away season.

Surely the 05, 06 grand finals gets a look in for the competitiveness?

IMO the greatest game of all time. I still get tense watching it even though I know who wins.

Not just because I am a PAFC fan... but in all seriousness the 2004 GF was a damn good game:

- Lions going for 4th straight flag.
- the 2 best teams over recent years finally meet in the GF.
- Hardwick stirs things up earlier.
- A number of spot fires in the 1st half... Hardwick, Cornes on Brown, Brown smacks Carr, Lynch haymakers at Wakelin, Carr stands over Aker.
- Aker the entertainer... kicks some great goals... controversially gives up a goal.
- Port break away early.
- Lions charge back and hit front at half time.
- See-saw 3rd quarter... before Wanganeen starts his purple patch.
- Byron Pickett and Peter Burgoyne at their running best.
- Port run away in the last and into party time.
- emotional, image defining scenes with Williams at the end.

Totally understand if you don't wish to show the in-laws a Port game though.

Aside from that... one of the recent close ANZAC games is a MUST!!! Captures the importance of our country as well as a cracking game of AFL.:thumbsu:

I dunno. 8.22 on the part of the Roos robs it of a bit of lustre for mine. I can't help but feel that a first time observer would be thinking "WTF is this shit on the part of the guys in blue and white?"

Give them Bulldogs vs St Kilda Round 4 2012. Pretty much the worst game ever to have played over the last 10 years or so. Then every game from then on will seem absolutely brilliant.

In all seriousness, the two that I'd pick are Hawthorn vs Geelong Round 19, 2012 (or perhaps Round 17, 09 but Kelli Underwood ruins that coverage) and the Anzac Game 2009 (Zaharakis' goal)

But nobody's mentioned it, you can't go past the last quarter of the Sydney-Geelong 2005 semi and Nick Davis' performance. Pure class.

2011 GF is a good one. Two hard teams, high skills, excitement and so on.
2012 GF for the same reasons.
2011 PF Collingwood V Hawthorn was a ripper too. Possibly the best game ever.

Several of the recent Hawthorn V Geelong games are crackers too. Tomahawk or Jimmy kicking the winning score after the siren especially.

The ANZAC day game 2012 was a good one too.

I personally wouldn't show one-sided games as they often don't showcase the physicality and toughness of the game well.

that's my 2 bobs worth

Agreed i think that is the best game i have ever seen. The last quarter was an epic battle. Buddy looked like he had won it until luke ball kicked the match winner!

The wind at the ground was shocking that day. Norths goal kicking wasn't as bad as you think. It certainly wasn't as bad as Geelong in 08.

I'd go for the 1979 wests v pioneers grand final in Alice.
The flagless Wests had marched into the 78 final without a loss, but choked at the death. 79 they repeated it, and in a high scoring, skillful game played at a lightening speed victorians could never have the benefit of enjoying, the final siren sounded with the scores at 142 apiece. Wests captain/coach Bill Bennett had fortunately marked the ball just before the hooter, and kicked truly amid a delirious crowd flooding the ground in celebration!
Somewhere there's a video of it - I saw it once. Lucky enough to have witnessed it first hand as well.
What it doesn't show is the fight in the club rooms afterwards when the enraged pioneer players tore down the gyprock walls separating the clubs.
