An animal rights group has stumped up a $1000 for anyone who can help find a person who deliberately ran over and killed nine kangaroos in a Queensland holiday town.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) offered the reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the attack on The Esplanade at Toorbul, north of Brisbane, on Wednesday night.
Witnesses saw a white Toyota Landcruiser ute driving up The Esplanade when a group of roos hopped across the road to feed on the other side.
Instead of slowing down or stopping to avoid them, the driver deliberately steered the ute at them, PETA said.
A number were killed, including two joeys.
Ten minutes later the ute came back and drove over a roo which was lying injured on the road before hitting and killing several more.
PETA Australia director Jason Baker described the killings as a barbaric massacre and urged anyone with information to come forward, "before any other animals become targets".
"It is essential that the driver be caught and punished appropriately for this heinous crime," he said in statement.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call RSPCA QLD on 1300 ANIMAL.
