On the up

Ok, it was a draw, but at least we looked much better than we did in previous weeks. We need to start playing good, flowing footy and that started in the second half. If we can get a bit of a run on leading up to the finals we might make a good showing.

Anyway, do we have a realistic chance to make the last day in September and actually perform well??? At the start of the season i would have been happy if we made the finals and not just to make up the numbers like last year. Should i feel shattered if we don't make the top four?

I know i will be, but if i was told at the start of the season this was to be the scenario we were going to face i probably would have told you not to get my hopes up and to just take one week at a time.

So lets just take one week at a time and see what happens!!

Take a step back 2 years and look where we were under Judge.

To be in the finals is a major achievement and we all know we are a young side who is still developing. I would expect us to be better prepared next year, but this year and last year have been a bonus as far as I am concerned.

After Judge I expected us to slowly improve and get back in to the top 8 in our third year. For us to be where we are is terrific and if we bow out in the first week of the finals so be it.

How many of you actually tipped us to win?

I tipped us to win this week. But I always do that, so it doesn't mean much really.

Your post is spot-on. We need to keep it in perspective. And Geelong at home is a tough ask.

a draw

I tipped us to win as well, but I also tip us every week. In the Judge years my payment of my fees for the footy tipping competition was actually seen as a donation as each week I picked us to win :)

I actually was very doubtful about a win yesterday - as were the majority of the "experts" as Geelong have always been very difficult to beat down there.

I thought there were some excellent signs yesterday. SO GOOD to have Chad Fletcher back. How much better when we also regain Gardiner and Embley. Brauny was magnificent again when away from home. I think he is consistently our best player when away. Ben his usual brilliant captain's game. Hunter and Glassy good down back. Callum another good game and great goal. Kerr great last quarter. Was he playing halfback?? I hate watching on TV.! Could anyone at the game tell me where David Haynes was for most of the game? I hate watching on TV.! I can only remember one camera shot of our bench so have no idea where David was. I hate watching on TV - and I also hate Victorian commentators! When are the men in red going to start watching what happens off the ball? Juddy is forever being scragged off the ball - it is time he (and others) was given some protection.

Happy to come away with the two points - and no further injuries:)

FIRST QUARTERS.

We've gotta stop being nice and quit handing out all these head starts....

Thats where we are falling apart. We need to get the first couple of goals on the board instead of playing catch up footy all the time. The game against Essendon really showed our weakness in this area and other teams have capitalised on it.

At least we did show some hunger there yesterday, Judd played a bit better than the 2 previous weeks, so there were some good signs.

And why has Chambers been playing WAFL all season??? Makes no sense.

Scragged is right. Haynes started at FF and was scragged every time he lead. In the first half there was a blatant one that ended up with a rebound goal. BB got scragged a lot but he was a bigger bloke than Haynes and could often break the foul.

I recommend folk tape the games and watch them a second time ignoring what's happenning on the ball, just see what is happening on the fringes. We are getting murdered by scragging, holding and even the odd knee in the thigh. Yesterday was great because ch10 showed the game in wide screen digital, and you see a lot more of the fringe play. I recommend the umpires ne shown replays on wide screen. Maybe they would see what they missed during the game...or would they?

Terry Wallace as a commentator, AHHHHHHHHH! He is so aggrevating...

Pretty please that we came away with at least two points, I guess it's better than going home with nothing at all. Cousins and Fletcher were great all day. Chambers had a really good game, where the hell has he been all year? Kerr was great in the last quarter.

Even though we didn't win there were a lot of positives, and things might not be so bad come finals time.

Although I have to say I was pretty ****ed off in the last quarter where we had two or three shots at goal and missed them because we stuffed around with the ball too much.

Anyway cheer up kids, it could be worse! :D

I'm on record as tipping us to win this one, and I'm very disappointed that we didn't.

As Mr Eagle said we've got to stop handing out freebies at the start of every game. So far this year we've handed out starts to Essendon, Sydney, Port, St Kilda, Crows (twice I think) and Geelong. And in those 6 (or 7) games we've picked up two whole premiership points. We have to be ready to play at the opening bounce or we might as well not turn up; all the good comebacks in the world won't help if we run out of time (Geelong, Sydney, Crows to a lesser extent) or energy (St Kilda, Essendon).

again

Frodo, I will do as you suggest and watch the game again today. I tend to miss a bit during the actual telecast as I am usually too overwrought to take note of all the things off the ball.

maybe as a training exercise but it doesn't help us if they don't pick it up on the day.

Saturdays game was on wide screen digital and you could see a lot more. I'd like to see AFL cameras stationary positioned to view both 50's and be reviewed after the game. But they'd only show what two out of three umpires are missing. All three tend to ball watch.

I'm curious - I've watched a few Ch 10 games on widescreen (via the PC) and I didn't think you saw that much more (purely IMO). Do you get multiple angles on digital?

m_b, I turned off the sound mainly because I was sick of hearing Wallace's irritating squeak. Listened to 6WF (I'm becoming quite a fan of Smokey Dawson) which was about a second in front of the vision - quite a funky experience hearing the bloke call the goal just as the ball is being dropped onto the boot.

Having been one of the fortunate or unfortunate people that went to the match all I can say is after the game all I felt was a hollow feeling. Brauny was right in front of us when he went for the goal and we all sat their with our breaths held watching it going towards goal. When it hit the post we felt as bad as Brauny did. We didn't know how long to go and barely heard the siren. Because the game was so tense I didn't realise we had even drawn until I seen the faces of the players and turned around and check the scoreboard. Two points is better then none as was said but in the words of one of the players who said if not for 10 minutes of bad football when we let them get 4 goals we would have won the game. That about sums it up, plus the men who look like Murray from the Wiggles who call themselves umpires.
