Expansion A third team in Queensland? AFL acknowledges QLD3 as a 20th licence option

In what Bizarro world do Adelaide and West Coast amalgamate?
I meant instead of Eagles and Bears joining as team 13 and 14, Eagles and Crows would be team 13 and 14 with Bears not existing and Roy’s moving to Brisbane before 87.

So AFL in 87 would’ve had 10 teams VIC and 1 each WA, SA, NSW and QLD to start with.

Ok misunderstood. All good

Not sure what your argument is here.

First of all, off-field support is way more important than local players. And Canberra has that. We likely have more AFL fans than Hobart. Public servants like football and spend money like everyone else (in fact, usually spend more money).

As for local players. Canberra has about 8 current players. Combined with SNSW, there's ~40 current players. Plenty of pull for players to play at, or close to, home.
I mean the entire playing pool.

What is keeping a player in Canberra when they can play football at home? it's even common for WA and SA guys to get drafted to one of their home state teams and still request a trade to Victoria.

Western Australia produces a lot of footballers and lots of them like the WA lifestyle.

Victoria has eight teams and a place on the birth certificate of most players in the AFL and it's a major city and the home of the game.

Sydney's got nice weather, it's a great place to live if you're on a few hundred grand a year, anonymity is a big appeal for lots of guys, and the Swans are seen as good employers.

Brisbane and Gold Coast – Victorians have a hard on for Queensland, they treat it like it has the best weather on earth.

But what appeal does living in Canberra bring?

Most of this is already in the works. There's plans to upgrade Manuka contingent on a BBL team.

It was part of Labor's election campaign (which they won). Canberra's the front runner for a BBL team.

It's a tricky one with the rugby teams also pushing for a stadium, but a Manuka upgrade will only cost like 10% of the new stadium.

But that's counter-intuitive. Canberra isn't propping up the Giants, it's holding them back.
I fully hear where you are coming from, canberra needs a team. But as a Tasmanian, I think you are underestimating the AFLs desire to get the best deal they possibly can stadium wise.

While Manuka seems to be a really good spot for a stadium, it would need significant upgrades to make it home stadium worthy in the AFLs eyes.

The AFL has stressed for the stadium to be modern and worthy of prime time television in the case of tasmania, for many reasons I don't think Manuka would need to have a roof, etc. But I do think that it would need to hold roughly 25-30,000 and be a relatively new development befitting of a new team

Pretty much as I said, 40 players from Canberra/Southern NSW (including a fifth of those from Canberra).
For context, Tasmania has 24 players.

Players from the Riverina, playing for Canberra, will live within three hours of their hometowns, with likely preseason matches in front of their friends and family. It's an easy day trip home, or easy day trips for friends and family to come watch. Currently players have to move five hours away.

We’d also be the closest non-Victorian team. Which means players from northern Victoria in particular won’t feel the go-home factor. Harley Reid probably would’ve been happier to be drafted by Canberra.

Canberra would also have a bit of a Geelong angle aimed at the country players. Not everybody wants to live in a big city. Canberra has a lot for a city of 500k. But you can also own a farm 20 mins from Manuka.

Throw in disproportionately 20-somethings population already mentioned, and Canberra should have no trouble attracting and retaining talent.

If I were a 19-year-old recruit, I’d definitely prefer Canberra over Hobart (no offensive, Taswegians).

While it sucks what Tasmania has had to go through, a 20th team won't be held to the same standards.

The AFL did not want to expand to 19 teams. Tasmania forced their hand, so the AFL made ridiculous hoops for them to jump through. Tasmania surprised them, met all the standards and secured the 19th licence. The 20th team is evening things out again, not forcing an expansion. They won't just waltz in, but there won't be as many hoops.

Manuka in its current state isn't fit to host an AFL team. But the planned upgrades will get us to 20k. And encompass half the ground. The other half has been relatively recently upgraded. That will be fine to start. Sure, I'd prefer more capacity, but it'll be fine, and always packed, which is good for broadcasts.

And you're right, we definitely don't need a roof. We're the driest capital from March through September. Our winters are cold, but they're crisp, dry and still. A roof would be depriving us of the sun on those beautiful days. I would love for them to look into some heating options though.

Doesn’t matter, they would not average more than 8k a game.

Gold Coast has not been a failure off field. They will succeed if they perform better on field.

Canberra would also be a success.
Every team makes the AFL money due to TV rights.
Darwin would get at least 30,000 every week imo.

NT is a football state, Gold Coast have been a failure.
An NT team would be a bigger disaster than Gold Coast. It's a silly idea, it sounds nice on paper, but it won't work. No one will want to go there, the temperature will be an issue. It's too far away - New Zealand is closer to Melbourne than Darwin is.

I heard from a bloke in the know that it will happen.

Yep, oppo supporters would go for the weather and other NT people would go.

Not many oppo supporters are going now when there's only two games a year, why would they suddenly start going in their thousands?

Other NT people are hours away. Alice Springs is 15 hours away.

The ground will have a roof

Will it? None of the renders have a roof. Sean Bowden from the bid has tried to play down the importance of a roof.

I'm just telling you what I heard.

Proximity to the Riverina region is potentially a massive positive for the Canberra bid, if they can utilise it correctly. We've all seen/heard of the ridiculous talent that's come from the Riverina (Bunton, Carey, Crawford and the Danihers just to name a few) and if they could combine that rich Riverina footy history with the local Canberra footy scene to create a seamless zone that's seen as the one area by players and fans alike, then you're loooking at a pretty strong supporter base + academy zone.

If Canberra is chosen as the 20th AFL licence, then I'd certainly be insisting on at least two of their games being played in Wagga Wagga every year so majority of Riverina footy fans can get to the games to support them and watch some of their local hereos play at the highest level in front of a 'hometown' crowd. Then you'll have hardcore Riverina fans that will be willing to drive the 3h to watch home games in Canberra because it's legitimately close enough to do that, but the masses need at least a couple with an hour or two of their hometown to get onboard.
