This is very early, but I have decided to have a crack at this years Phantom Draft for those of you with no September action to look forward to.

I know things will change a bit over the finals and trading period, but here goes…

1. Bulldogs – Adam Cooney (SA)
Clearly the best player available in this years draft. A fast, hard running midfielder. Who doesn’t need more of those?

2. Carlton – Andrew Walker (VIC)
Walker hasn’t got the attention of some other players in this years pool, but he is a tall, highly athletic midfielder who runs hard and has a great spurt. A very good pick.

3. Melbourne – Keppler Bradley (WA)
The Dees have been desperate for a tall backman for years. They have to pick him here to avoid the Dogs nabbing him at 4.

4. Bulldogs – Farren Ray (WA)
Ultra classy midfielder who has excelled in senior football in WA. Brave, fast and with great skills. Only downside is he is sleight (sorry Bulldog fans).

5. Melbourne – Kane Tenance (VIC)
Ultra quick wingman/flanker from Murray. He has tremendous acceleration and is great at breaking play and booting goals on the run.

6. Richmond – Colin Sylvia (VIC)
Tough. Tough. Tough. Midfielder/forward who the Tigers need to add much needed grunt and hardness. Will walk straight into their team. Did I mention he was tough?

7 Geelong – Troy Chaplin (VIC)
Geelong has been searching for a KPP player with presence. Chaplin could be their solution. He can play at either end and dominated games at the under 18 championships.

8. St Kilda – Raphael Clarke (NT)
While he hasn’t had a great season, this pick is too easy. Clarke has the tricks, but needs to harden up. Taller than his brother.

9. Kangaroos – Will Gayfer (VIC)
Laidley will love Gayfer. Tough, hard, tall and versatile. Not overly stylish, but he can play either end and can be relied upon to get the job done.

10. Hawthorn – David Mundy (VIC)
A full back who can really close down a forward. Plus he can run the ball out of the backline and kicks with accuracy. Much better pick than Brennan last year. Perhaps the most genuine Full back this year.

11. Essendon – Fergus Watts (VIC)
Sheeds loves players with presence and Watts has heaps. Not overly quick, but he likes it tough and is great at taking contested marks across CHF.

12. West Coast – Beau Waters (SA)
A player after Wooshas own heart. This kid plays it very tough and very tight, and is a HBF who can really crash the packs.

13. Adelaide – Luke Peel (VIC)
Tallish defender who is composed and steady and had a great u18 Championship. Future leader at the club.

14. Fremantle – Matthew Moody (WA)
Local boy. Talented, but somewhat injury prone forward. Has a lot of class and has great skills. Can also have a run in the midfield and give Freo more options.

15. Sydney – David Trotter (NSW)
Very easy choice for the Swans. Trotter is a genuine utility that can play in a number of positions and is a smart and clever footballer. A bonus to get the local boy so deep into Round One.

16. Brisbane – Ryley Dunn (VIC)
Dunn has fallen a bit since the under 18 championships, but he is strong and athletic and will add even more steel to the Lions strong defence/midfield.

17. Collingwood – Ricky Dyson (VIC)
With most of the good talls off the board already, the Pies go for some home ground talent, a boy from Northern coached by Ray Shaw. He has class and silky skills, and is another superb kick for the Magpies

18. Port Adeliade – Brock McLean (VIC)
Port keeping looking for hard players, and they have found another rock in Brock McLean. A tough ruck rover who can also go forward and kick goals.

18. Port Adeliade – Brock McLean (VIC)
17. Collingwood – Ricky Dyson (VIC)
16. Brisbane – Ryley Dunn (VIC)
would have thought that these guys should have gone higher, probably top 10

2. Carlton – Andrew Walker (VIC)
6. Richmond – Colin Sylvia (VIC)
not sure about walker going at #2, i was hoping to get one of these two guys at Essendon with pick 11!

If the Bulldogs recruit Farren Ray at number 4 I will be greatly depressed, disappointed and would consider staging a commando style coup of the Bulldog recruiting dept.

Our list is full of players like Farren Ray and we hardly need another one.

I grant he is a good player but he is not worthy of a top 5 pick. He is essentially an outside winger type that has a number of flaws in his game including erratic disposal. It will take years for him to develop a build suitable os sustaining him at the elite level. THe Bulldogs have far too many of these as it is.

I would much rather this pick be used on one of the big KP guys like Bradley, Chaplin or Morrison or perhaps on one of the bigger midfielders like Waters, Dunn or McLean. A classy midfielder/forward like Trotter would be of much more value to us.

Not too far off the mark I wouldn't think in terms of likely players. Beg to differ a little with actual spots.

I think Raph Clarke is a top 5 pick. I seem to be in the minority, but I rate him.

McLean should go higher, but might not as clubs rush to grab any tall they can.

I'd be very happy to have Mundy at Hawthorn. Not sure if he is worth a top 10, but he is a good prospect.

Billy Morrison will be in the mix.

Like The Doc I'm far from convinced on Ray. Think he could be a good player, but I'm struggling to find room for him in my top 10 at the minute.

There have been quite a few phantom drafts on here already, this is one I copied from a month or two ago.

1. Bulldogs - Adam Cooney
2. Carlton - Kayne Tenace
3. Melbourne - Fergus Watts
4. Bulldogs - Troy Chaplin
5. Melbourne - Andrew Walker
6 Richmond - Rylee Dunn
7. Geelong - Keplar Bradley
8. St Kilda - Raphael Clarke
9. Roos - Wayne Gayfer
10. Hawthorn – Billy Morrison
11. Essendon - Colin Sylvia
12. West Coast - Matthew Moody
13. Adelaide - Brock McLean
14. Fremantle - Farren Ray
15. Sydney - Matthew Spencer
16. Collingwood - Ricky Dyson
17. Brisbane - Brent Hall
18. Port Adeliade – Beau Waters

if you have seen Darren Jolly play lately, you will know why we wont be picking Kepler BRadley

I think we will take Watts and hopefully Tenace

farren ray - the next Nathan Eagleton?

just a question for you draft experts.

Will any of these players come in and make an immediate impact ala Chris Judd?

If the Cats end up with Troy Chaplin I will be one very happy cats fan :) Even Bradley sounds alright.

Adam Cooney is the on most likely to have the biggest impact in his 1st year. Although I doubt he will make as big an impact as Judd. Great player none the less.

Fair effort Jonathon.
Do you think Morrison will be overlooked in the 1st round ?
195cm forward/rucks will be at a premium this year.
I think Peel is a talent but he might struggle to make the 1st round and I also think that Spencer and Burges might have some strong 1st round claims.
You seem to be a fan of Slyvia's, as am I, but I think a lack of height might work against him. One of the smartest footballer in the TAC. Reminds me a bit of Brett Montgomery

We are likely to go for a key forward. Someone line Watts would be exceptional.

To those draft experts that have seen a lot of TAC games, is there any chance that the likes of Watts, Chaplin, Gayfer or Morrison will slip to pick 13?????

Cheers.;)

Lamb, Broadbridge, Ferguson, Carroll, Rivers, Miller, Molan, Rodgers....

How many developing talls do Melbourne need?

They might not have any tall defenders now but in a couple of years they'll have them by the bucketloads.

Supporters of 8 clubs are looking forward to October and November. After this weekend another 2 clubs will be talking about it.
Like the Doc, I will be devasted if the Dogs pick a MF with pick 4.

I would be happy if the Roos selected Gayfer.

From all reports Morrison and Spencer will be selected in the top 19.

Morrison hasn't played all year.

So

1. I have never seen him play, therefore can't really assess.

2. No AFL club recruitng staff would have seen him play so to take him the first round would be a pretty big punt.

What height is Burges exactly? All I know about him is that article on the footygoss website describing him as a bit like a Pavlich and how keen clubs are on him.

BTW Draft Camp invitations have gone out, but haven't been publicised yet.

1. Fair call - I have no idea where to rate him either. When I eventually get around to putting together my thoughts I'll have him as an asterix at the end of the 1st round I think.

2. You've got to remember the recruiters have been watching these kids since they were 15, they would have all seen Morrison play plenty of times. Also, he went to Ireland and was starring for the AIS before doing his shoulder.

If he is selected top 5 I doubt it would surprise many of the AFL clubs, more the media who haven't done their research.

Fahren Ray would be a disastor for the dogs. Players that light do not deserve such high picks they a middle range players at their best.
Mclean should go very high. A great impact player. Beau Waters is great if he didnt get knocked out so much, I suppose cause he is so suicidal. One of the toughest players I have ever seen. I would rate Waters as one of the best players in the draft but also the one with the highest risk.

Geelong are in the same boat, except we have collected a bunch of developing tall forwards. McCarthy, Playfair, Lonergan and soon we will have Blake and maybe N. Ablett. If you happen to have read any newspapers of late it also seems we are trying to get every forward in the AFL via trade.

Bradley or Chaplin would be nice, we need an up and coming KP backman, but given the teams with picks before us I can't see them dropping to 7. Personally I think we would be better off with a Clarke or Tenance instead of another KP player. Any chance of one of these four dropping to 7?

Agree re: Raph Clarke. Had he been eligible last year, he'd have gone top 3 for sure. He hasn't had the greatest year, but after draft camp recruiters will be salivating once again. I could see him going as high as pick 3.

As far as Hawthorn goes, Clarke would be my first preference, but unless we trade down the order, we won't have a chance. Chaplin and Morrison would be next choices, followed by Gayfer. Not overly impressed by Mundy, and Watts is terminally overated around here.

Although I don't personally rate him, I expect Erikkson to go first round, as ruckmen rarely last beyond that point.
