This is very early, but I have decided to have a crack at this years Phantom Draft for those of you with no September action to look forward to.
I know things will change a bit over the finals and trading period, but here goes…
1. Bulldogs – Adam Cooney (SA)
Clearly the best player available in this years draft. A fast, hard running midfielder. Who doesn’t need more of those?
2. Carlton – Andrew Walker (VIC)
Walker hasn’t got the attention of some other players in this years pool, but he is a tall, highly athletic midfielder who runs hard and has a great spurt. A very good pick.
3. Melbourne – Keppler Bradley (WA)
The Dees have been desperate for a tall backman for years. They have to pick him here to avoid the Dogs nabbing him at 4.
4. Bulldogs – Farren Ray (WA)
Ultra classy midfielder who has excelled in senior football in WA. Brave, fast and with great skills. Only downside is he is sleight (sorry Bulldog fans).
5. Melbourne – Kane Tenance (VIC)
Ultra quick wingman/flanker from Murray. He has tremendous acceleration and is great at breaking play and booting goals on the run.
6. Richmond – Colin Sylvia (VIC)
Tough. Tough. Tough. Midfielder/forward who the Tigers need to add much needed grunt and hardness. Will walk straight into their team. Did I mention he was tough?
7 Geelong – Troy Chaplin (VIC)
Geelong has been searching for a KPP player with presence. Chaplin could be their solution. He can play at either end and dominated games at the under 18 championships.
8. St Kilda – Raphael Clarke (NT)
While he hasn’t had a great season, this pick is too easy. Clarke has the tricks, but needs to harden up. Taller than his brother.
9. Kangaroos – Will Gayfer (VIC)
Laidley will love Gayfer. Tough, hard, tall and versatile. Not overly stylish, but he can play either end and can be relied upon to get the job done.
10. Hawthorn – David Mundy (VIC)
A full back who can really close down a forward. Plus he can run the ball out of the backline and kicks with accuracy. Much better pick than Brennan last year. Perhaps the most genuine Full back this year.
11. Essendon – Fergus Watts (VIC)
Sheeds loves players with presence and Watts has heaps. Not overly quick, but he likes it tough and is great at taking contested marks across CHF.
12. West Coast – Beau Waters (SA)
A player after Wooshas own heart. This kid plays it very tough and very tight, and is a HBF who can really crash the packs.
13. Adelaide – Luke Peel (VIC)
Tallish defender who is composed and steady and had a great u18 Championship. Future leader at the club.
14. Fremantle – Matthew Moody (WA)
Local boy. Talented, but somewhat injury prone forward. Has a lot of class and has great skills. Can also have a run in the midfield and give Freo more options.
15. Sydney – David Trotter (NSW)
Very easy choice for the Swans. Trotter is a genuine utility that can play in a number of positions and is a smart and clever footballer. A bonus to get the local boy so deep into Round One.
16. Brisbane – Ryley Dunn (VIC)
Dunn has fallen a bit since the under 18 championships, but he is strong and athletic and will add even more steel to the Lions strong defence/midfield.
17. Collingwood – Ricky Dyson (VIC)
With most of the good talls off the board already, the Pies go for some home ground talent, a boy from Northern coached by Ray Shaw. He has class and silky skills, and is another superb kick for the Magpies
18. Port Adeliade – Brock McLean (VIC)
Port keeping looking for hard players, and they have found another rock in Brock McLean. A tough ruck rover who can also go forward and kick goals.

Even Bradley sounds alright.
