I agree that Wallace got the team in the finals but his list was good enough to go the whole way......(as most of us thought at 3/4 time in 97PF). So close yet......Gary has done the same but at least we know he wants to be here for the long term. Wallace will always look for a better option if came along.
As far as anyone in the league thinking he under achieved ask the clubs he talked to about coaching once he left the Bullies.

Didn't Gary desert Geelong when he had a contract with them? Wasn't he looking for a better option?? Please explain.

Should we talk to the Sydney hierarchy who would have appointed him if they had their way??

Can you nominate another club that he wanted to coach who rejected him for under achieving?

Yep Gary did leave the Cats and he found a better option the Crows. IMO I think Ayres still has the ability to rebuild our team.

The Sydney thing (well) pretty sad if the Hierarchy at Sydney don't appoint the own coach. I understand that there was sponsorship pressure but I think they made the right choice.

So you criticize Wallace on one hand, and commend Ayres on the other for doing the same thing. Strange set of values.

As for Carlton, who did they appoint? Another coach who was abandoning a club for the same reasons as Wallace. He liked to get his agreed pay cheque that was agreed to and had been earnt. Sadly for Pagan, Chicken Little was right, and the sky fell in shortly after his appointment.

Wallace was actually the front runner for Carlton until Pagan threw his hat into the ring.

Wayne,

you're right about perrie, anyone who can take a contested mark has a place in AFL football. I think he is cherry ripe to go somewhere else and leave us with egg on our face.
Just cannot work out why Perrie has not been persisted with at CHF, given his form last year, his improved kicking for goal & the big pre-season he put in. He is a confidence player & his confidence has been shattered by predominantly playing him in the backline (when he has little idea to play as a defender) or on the bench, with small spurts on the forward line.

:D

What a great debate!

In answer to some of what has been said.

Stiffy, I was unaware of what Wallace had said on 5AA, but even with that said, I am not convinced that he is capable of coaching a team to a premiership. Further, our team is a hell of a long way from a premiership. Would he be prepared for that long haul?Personally, I believe we are better off trying a young untried coach. As with players, we may unearth an undiscovered gem.

macca23, whilst I acknowledge that things were tough at the dogs, at the very least, Wallace could have waited out the season (one whole week) and then told them of his decision to moveon. As for his pay "disputes" well they are as much speculation to us as the supposed deal he had with Sydney. I stand by the fact I would expect our coach to bleed for the club, Wallace left the Dogs when the chips were really down. Can't agree with those saying Ayres is somehow different however. I was not happy with that either at the time. Fact is, I will support whoever is chosen to be our coach.

Whilst on the topic, I think Ayres is getting a raw deal at the moment. I'm ready for a change and never really believed he could deliver us what we want, but don't think our current situation comes solely down to him.

1. Or we might uncover a dog's ****!! ;)

2. Totally agree on this one. Given his time again, I bet that he would wait the week.

3. They weren't disputes. The man plain did not get paid his wages - his coaching fee - for months. Smorgon tried to brush it off as an admin error, but the truth was that there was no money. If I remember correctly Smorgon eventually gave Wallace HIS own money to cover the backpay of wages.

4. Ayres is getting a raw deal if people are demanding his head now. We must treat him with respect and allow him to serve out his contract. But as the head man on the playing side, the buck stops with him. He will have had 5 years, and at the end of August or early September, his time will be up.
