John Worsfold and Chris Judd were on the TV last weekend saying Darren Glass was a certainty for AA Fullback.

According to Champion Data, Ben Rutten has had the least amount of goals scored against him by his direct opponent-13 in 13 matches

Other statistics of the possible AA Fullback are

Kicks Handballs Marks Tackles Total Disposals

Rutten 125 80 69 21 205

Scarlett 141 47 57 10 188

Carroll 109 58 73 21 167

Glass 49 84 51 18 133

Hudgton 63 51 53 25 114

I cannot see anything in those figures to say Ben Rutten should not be AA Fullback

Apparently Glass has more spoils than any of those fullbacks.
Presti has way more than anyone though, and I doubt he'd be picked, so that argument is full of holes.
In the end, the most important factor should be goals against. The fact that Rutten gives more run from defence (judging by a greater number of disposals) than any of the others on that list solidifies the fact that West Coast supporters are kidding themselves if they think Glass deserves to be AA ahead of the fullback of the team thats conceeded by far the least amount of goals this season.

AA selection (as I understand) is pretty much based on last years list, so far this year Ben has done nothing that warrants his removal.
However he hasn't cemented it by being streets ahead of the other FB's either.
The last half of the season is historically more relevant for AA selection anyway.
In other words if it was decided today he'd prolly get it, but its still up for grabs.
PS; I doubt it's a big motivator for him.

if they really thought he was a certainly, they wouldn't feel the need to spruik the message on TV like a cheap informercial.

they're trying to raise awareness, and build hope, because he is very far from a certainty.

I'm waiting for the "Dustin Fletcher/Scarlett/Mal Michael for AA Full Back" call to start wafting out of the Melbourne media like it does every year at about this time.

I'd be surprised if they didn't. Every club starts bleating about their potential AA reps as the year winds on.

Yes thats what we do. We start threads because we have chips on our shoulders, not because we want to ... say... discuss footy stuff.

Interesting to note that the 2 guys with the lowest average possessions have the most 1%ers.....dour spoilers with average skills, who don't provide much run from the backline. I'm sure even West Coast fans shudder when Glass has to kick the ball. No chance in hell for AA FB.

Anybody hear Quarterbrain before the Blues v Cats today? said that Scarlett was statistically the best fullback in the competition because he has had the least amount of goals kicked on him. One would think that when you bring stats into the equation that you cant really get it wrong, yet here we are.
How hard is it to read the piece of paper where its says Rutten has had the least amount of goals kicked on him, and played every game unlike scarlett.

I wouldn't worry too much, as he isn't an AA selector! Not the 1st time a commentator has made (wong) stats up & won't be the last.

Yep I heard that. AFL commentators were saying that last year as well  (well, ones of the victorian variety anyway)

If west coast had a more defensive style of play (like Adelaide or Geelong for example) then I'm sure he would have fewer goals kicked against him but the fact is that he is constantly one on one with his opponent in a very open forward line.

not to say that Rutten isnt a VERY good Full Back but he does get a fair amount more assistance from the rest of the team than Glass as such the "goal conceded" stat is not the #1 thing to consider when picking a fullback for the AA team

and Glass just happens to be better at run/carry/handball than kicking but yes he is a poor kick (but is getting better, even kicked a goal last week)

I love how the team that's scored more points than any other is considered 'defensive'.

Perhaps if Glass conceded fewer goals, West Coast might also be considered 'defensive'.

whose fault is that? The Adelaide defence for helping, or the west coast defence for being lazy?

It was a goal! It was clearly a goal! From where I was sitting in a Frankston gutter it went straight over the goal umpire's hat.

ROBBED!

ROBBED!!

Welcome to the Adelaide board.

You must be here to learn a little bit about the Gospel according to Neil or maybe just a few lessons on how to string together more than 3-4 weeks of good football.

Just in case the chip on your shoulder is blocking your view, here's Exhibit A in favour of the argument:
