2013 Forecast: AJ has reinvented himself as a small defender over the past few seasons and I think he probably needs to reinvent himself once again if he's to retain his spot on the list beyond 2013. What has become apparent is that AJ just isn't an AFL quality small defender and heading forward I don't think we can afford to continue to play him in that position. His effort and intensity can't really be questioned because it's clear he busts a gut but as a defender he's just not up to it. Disposal is average and I don't think he's a smart footballer at all and as such he continues to give away free kicks in damaging positions which really hurts the side particularly when it happens over and over again. As an example it's cringeworthy to see him slide on the ball in the defensive 50 only to be tackled and pinged for holding the ball. Happening once is a mistake but it has happened on numerous occasions which indicates to me he panics in defensive areas. In terms of where he goes from here I just don't know. Perhaps needs to try and make it as a midfielder but I just don't see him as a productive and effective midfielder at AFL level so I think he'll spend the majority of the season at VFL level. I do think he'll be seen at senior level but not much as he'll be passed by a fair few players on the list and probably won't be around in 2014. I think there's probably just too much going against him at the moment to be kept around unless he can really apply himself and show something as an attacking midfielder.

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

Pick two in the 2007 rookie draft.

Welcome to Carlton.
Has anyone got any Info on how he has been training, if he is Fit, would he be pushing for an elevation if someone was to get injured?

For the Blues...

Kruz, Browne and Armfield have been going about their business in a neat and composed fashion. They are doing about 80% of the training and getting into the swing of things. All 3 have looked good during the skill sessions. Darren Pfeiffer is in the rehab group due to the ankle injury he obtained at the Tigers during their Non-Practice-Game prior to the Rookie draft

Hill, Joseph, Ellard have completed all the sessions and don't appear to have any major issues with keeping up. Ellard has impressed with his skills and Hill with his speed and agility.

Irishman Shields just got back to training on Saturday.

AJ is a great little mover but is the worst kick out there, if he was a spin bowler he'd a have an entire arsenal of deliveries that would befuddle batsmen.

He's doing well, keeping up nicely. He's a real nice fella aswell, a little bit shy:).

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

From what i have seen I think Blu is exaggerating a bit. Having said that I think Blu is also a fine observer of footballers (particularly the U18's).

His kicking over distance isn't fantastic but over 30-40m it is reasonably sound. Certainly enough to work with and potential to be a fast in and under extractor, so i wouldn't write him off just yet.

Sounds like Foley when he first started

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

Yes, that is AJ. I still think Ellard is probably ahead of him this year due to his football brain

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

I was a big fan of Joseph pre-draft (loved his pace, aggression and attitude - I wouldn't be surprised if he follows a similar development curve to Foley), so I'm quite interested to see how he progresses. How's he been performing for the Bullants so far this season?

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

From what i've heard and seen about this guy he's really getting me excited. Any more footage or replays or anything else on him?

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

He really frustrated Alett at times tonight.

He's quick and wears his opponent like a glove most of the time.

Well done young fella!

Re: Aaron Joseph (rookie)

Really impressive tonight.

When I first saw AJ lining up on Ablett I was worried, but he was very good all night. Didn't get overawed, and managed to hold him quite well.

Sure, Ablett got away from him a few times but that is to be expected. But for the most part he stayed right with him and made his night not as comfortable as he would have hoped.
