Port could very well get the player they want at 34 that they would have taken at 27 anyway. Teams seem to vary greatly in needs and opinions by that stage. Seems to me you've done alright out of that one.

I'm not unhappy about that.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

I thought we did pretty well to salvage the Carr trade with what we did today. I was disappointed yesterday with only draft picks, but today we added a couple of tough, straight line players (Walsh was virtually a bonus) and improved our position in the draft with two first round picks and two second. People laughed at #43 but we used it well and I see Longmuir was traded for #73 - altho I guess that's Freo's second round this year. Over in the west they may as well tune into the draft 3am Monday when they actually get involved.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

Hmmm... he's played 57 times since his debut in 2000, and has only cracked a 20-possession game once (in 2002 vs the Kangas).

Michael Doughty has greater credentials.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

If we were looking for a replacement for Schofield on a bad day, we'd have gone for Doughty.

Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned Doughty's not fit to wear the guernsey of Hackham thirds let alone Adelaide's - but - Shattock's career to date is nigh on laughable:

You will most likely find that he had his "decent" possession games when Brisbane had one of their main midfielders missing.
You could be a top fifty player, and still miss out getting too much gametime at Brisbane. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
It's got all to do with opportunity, and thus a worthwhile punt.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

Ah well. This is still better than the RFK debacle.

A lot of people thought Port were out of their minds picking up Josh Mahoney to....... ;)

I'll concede that point, sure, but I guess the glaring difference is JM was acquired for peanuts, Shattock has come aboard for a second rounder. ;)

It's also worth noting that AS is 25 next May, so he isn't exactly a kid either... bit of a strange one that.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

Well really, Shattock came aboard for a late third rounder and a second round upgrade....so basically a reasonable third rounder on average.

Shattock is the same age as Carr.

I guess the point I'm making is, the fact he's come from the Lions - and played in a Premiership - is tending to cloud people's judgment as to how good he really is, and Port paid over the odds for him.

Considering he's 24 (25 next May) and has been in the system some five seasons, his statistics are poor at best.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

I don't think anyone is under the delusion that he's a first 22 player for us at this stage.

Re: Shattock comes to Port

Well, what do you expect for a third round pick? We don't need another late punt, we needed a guy that we can be pretty sure can fill a role for us if and when we need it. He's only played 50 games, but he's at least shown fairly reliable.

Personally I'd take a kid in the draft, especially with Francou to come back and the gaggle of half-blooded kids (Salopek especially) you have waiting in the wings on your list.

If Shattock was a few years younger, had more than just one 20-possession game (back in 2002) and a Premiership medallion (a game in which he didn't rack up a stat) to hang his hat on I wouldn't be so vocal.

He'd be very much fighting for the 20-26 type first drop player atm.
I think at Brisbane he got replaced by Fabian Francis' cousin. Much younger, and a better long term prospect at this stage.
