Jake Aarts has been invited to the State combine leading into the AFL draft and Charlie Thompson has been invited to the Rookie Me combine.

To qualify for the State combine at least 2 clubs need to nominate a player, while the rookie me combine requires one club to nominate.

You would think that we were the ones who nominated Thompson and were one of the clubs that nominated Aarts.

Good stuff. I reckon it wouldn't hurt VFL recruitment that our players get a shot at the AFL.

And good on them for being good enough to be looked at carefully. Hard road to hoe they are taking.

A while back, we seemed to have a policy at Coburg of rookie listing one player/year.

I always thought that was a good idea for helping build the VFL team and encourage the idea that it's all one club.

How old are these guys?

No idea about Thompson. I'd be hard pressed to point to him in a VFL team photo.

But Aarts must have been playing VFL for at least 3 seasons. His got a bit of a similar babyface to Broad, so I'd guess his not older than 25?

And his not bad. I'm not a recruiter's bumhole, so no idea if he'd make the step up to AFL, but could he possibly be worse than the 18 bollards Carlton are fielding these days?

I've always wondered how Silvestro would handle the step-up, too.

.
:D - very nice turn of phrase....

Thompson is a weird one as he has a Cooper Cronk rugby build and walks like Mick Malthouse. Has a good motor though, but is small in stature and not quick. It's strange as until last Saturday he hadn't been getting a gig for our VFL side in weeks. I wouldn't really be bothered with him as these types are a dime a dozen.
Silvestro is a very good VFL player at best , whilst Aarts deserves a second chance bc he's a goer and is the most suited to our game style.

What can you tell me about Thompson?
My young bloke played with him at Oakleigh Chargers and before that rep footy.

Great leader. Can play mid, half back and forward. Good accumulator. 6ft-ish.

Didn't know he had anything to do with Richmond.

For those unaware of the players

Jake Aarts 24 in December 180cm 76kg small forward/midfielder. Averages 12.9 disposals, 4.5 tackles and 1 goal a game.

Charlie Thompson 19 year old 183cm 80kg midfielder. Played 4 games for the season averaging 15.5 disposals & 1.75 tackles a game. Was recruited as an inside midfielder, but has been playing more outside given the depth the VFL side has in this position.

Why would our club want them to attend combines and give opposition clubs more of a look ??

We're not trying to hide the next Dusty, we're talking about a couple of players who in all honesty probably won't get drafted anyway, but why not get them tested against other players of a similar level and see how they stack up under the same conditions, rather than testing them on their own and making decisions based off of that.

The testing isn't against others. They are standard tests and the results are well publicised . Would just be a little weird and seemingly unnecessary as I'd suspect the clubs would have already or would have the means to test them somewhat whenever they wanted .

Didn’t realise Thompson was 183cm as he looked smaller to me. I really wasn’t impressed with him in the games I watched him bc he looked slow. He did however find a lot of ball early until he ran out of steam in his first three games at the level.
Here’s another write up on him talking up his leadership and rating him as a Hodge type. At 183cm /80kg maybe he can afford to be a little slower than most midfielders in his age group.

If we were going to draft them wouldn't you rather know how they compare against other players by having them tested under the same conditions.

Love the way Aarts plays. I think he’s ready made for AFL, and if we lose a Bolton or Stengle would love Richmond to draft him.

That’s who he meant. Good set of wheels, like Tigers Time I thought he might have got an invite.
Kicking can be a bit scrappy at times though

I'm sure there was an article on the AFL website or something earlier in the year which named Mannagh as one to watch as a mature age recruit. Surprised if he hasn't received an invite to the combine.
