ABC may axe WAFL coverage

Coverage of the WAFL by the ABC may be axed at the end of this season as the ABC will be cutting its television broadcast staff to just two in the near future. Negotiations between the ABC and the WAFC about broadcast rights have also stopped further suggesting that the ABC won't be continuing their coverage of the competition in 2012.

Looking very, very shaky at this point. I'd say the WAFL is looking likely to not be on TV next season but I hope the ABC will pick it up again for another three years. If the WAFL lose broadcast rights it would be a disaster for the competition which has been strengthening year by year for several seasons now. It would just be a massive setback to the competition and not only does the WAFL face the same problem, it looks as if the SANFL, VFL and TSL face the same dilemma.

Like i said on the SANFL board what is the reason for cost cutting when they get government funding

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure, they're just trying to screw some more money out of the government.

Why don't you people just go to the games instead?!?!

;)

Because its cold and windy, And I actually have to talk to people from my community

I always thought that it rated quite well for the ABC?

Averages around 125,000 viewers, sometimes more. Definitely a reasonble rating program for them at that time.

The WAFL has always rated well. I say bring it on. Let the ABC axe the WAFL because I'd say it'd be certain that another network would take it up. The ABC has never been particularly committed to the WAFL and they don't have the inclination to promote it the way a commercial channel or Foxtel would.

TBH I'm not sure if any one else would pick it up.

I reckon the only other channel interested would be ch9, or West TV, but I don't think they would have the resources.

I sent an email to the WAFL a couple of weeks ago inquiring about this. Needless to say, like my few other emails to them, there has been no response. Not that I am in any way surprised. ;)

What about Channel Ten? As I understand it, they have no AFL rights for next season. Tim Gossage and Lachy Reid are big WAFL fans and they promote the WAFL on The Western Front. I'm convinced public outcry would see a commercial channel take it up soon enough.

the wafl = pure football, pure community, that makes me happy
And if you no longer try to bust through a gap in a pack that exists, you are no longer a football player because they are competing, competing to win.:p

I love watching the VFL game on a Saturday, the umpiring is about a billion times better and the goalkicking is too. Plus you can hear the individual people yelling out near the effects mic. ARE YOU ****ING BLIND UMPIRE!!! lol:D

Channel 10 wanted to broadcast the WAFL many years ago. IIRC, the reason why the WAFL stuck with the ABC was that 10 wanted to pick and choose which game they would broadcast every week, whereas the ABC were happy to comply with a rule to broadcast at least 2 games from every WAFL ground.

I almost always watch it over the AFL broadcast game on Saturday arvo.

Nothing beats the beeping of car horns at park matches :thumbsu:

and you gotta love the $2 sausage sizzles! But buyer beware! especially if youre buying it in the middle of a cold and wet miserable winter's afternoon.

they could make the wafl experience better if they bring back the carnival atmosphere, ie bouncy castles in the background for the little ones etc
