Both were having stellar seasons before injury struck, who do you think was more dominant in the games they played up to that point?

Not sure if this was worth creating a thread for but Fyfe had about 100 AFLCA votes within the first 12 weeks. That sort of dominance is very rare. Ablett probably had better stats and more highlights though.

Ablett probably had better stats

All in all, fairly identical.

more highlights

Wouldn't be so sure about that either. Fyfe had about three goal of the year and two mark of the year nominations (or was it the other way around).

His game against the bulldogs was just one big highlight reel

His kicking is satisfactory, a weak link in his game maybe but he is far from the clanger king you claim and he more than makes up for it by being great at almost everything else.
Kicking is sorta the most important part of the game. Hence why you lost the 2013 GF, I do think he makes up for it but he is nowhere near ablett and never will be. He is a nice top 5 player in the comp though.

Fyfe was a complete monster last season and dominated week in week out, but Ablett's 2014 before his shoulder got crushed was something else, it was on another plane of existence. Fyfe was playing in one of the best sides in the competition, Ablett for one of the worst. If roles were reversed I've got no doubt Ablett would pull out the same kind of Brownlow and AFLCA votes, Fyfe not so much.

Nah, we lost the gf because our players (Fyfe included) let the occasion get to them in the first quarter.

but he is nowhere near ablett and never will be.

Ridiculous hyperbole but that's to be expected coming from you.

He is a nice top 5 player in the comp though.

I agree, he slots in nicely at 1 in that top 5.

how is that? Their stats are nearly identical, and judging from the record pace he was setting in the AFLCA, brownlow votes, you can't say Fyfe had less impact.

Fyfe was playing in one of the best sides in the competition, Ablett for one of the worst.

Freo were a borderline top 4 team if not for Fyfe, can think of many games where Freo would have likely lost if not for him. It's no coincidence that Freo's season turned to shit once Fyfe went down.

Ablett for one of the worst.

That Ablett is a bit of a money hungry mercenary who left his team to join a plastic franchise should not be held against Fyfe.

If roles were reversed I've got no doubt Ablett would pull out the same kind of Brownlow and AFLCA votes,

So how come he never even came close to doing so, even when playing for the all conquering Geelong side?

Fyfe not so much.

Why is that? Are you aware that just in his second season in the AFL, when playing in a side that was ravaged by injuries, with many of the midfield stars out of action, Fyfe made into the All-Australian squad and was stiff to miss out on the actual team? He showed very early that he doesn't need a strong team around him to dominate and take games by the scruff of the neck.

Bla bla bla you asked for peoples opinions, don't get so defensive when they are different from what you expected. Ablett moving for money is irrelevant. The Geelong side is irrelevant as you asked about 2014 in particular. I am more than aware of Fyfe's career, he's been one of my favourite non Essendon players from the get go because he's a freak and plays similar to one of my previous favourite players. However, when it comes to these two seasons, Ablett's performances blew me away so much more than Fyfe's did. He was just so damn good from the get go that I went to every single game he played in Melbourne that year (easy to do as an AFL member), just it was a pity it was only three games.

I don't at all have a problem with people choosing Ablett, its just when people exaggerate and claim 'its not even close', or 'Ablett was on another plane' that I pull them up on it because they're simply wrong.

It was no exaggeration. Personally, from what I viewed, Ablett's performances were on another plane to anything else I have ever witnessed in my close on 30 years of watching football. You may disagree with it, but you can't call it simply wrong.

Stats are great, GAJ had 80 possessions and 3 goals against Hawthorn that year and his team lost by 99 (35p & 1g) and 53 points (45p & 2g), they showed him **** all respect.

Fyfe was going at 2 Brownlow votes a game in a very good side up until he was injured. Ablett was going at 1.5 in a team that obviously wasn't as good but was still a winning team at the time. Gold Coast were 8-5 going into round 15 and went 2-6 afterwards. Both incredibly dominant and splitting hairs in saying who was the better performer.

He can call it exaggeration though. Ablett had a great season no doubt, but it was really only the first nine games of the year in which he made his claim for the MVP. After Round 9, Fyfe had him beat, injury or no injury.

Ablett after Round 9 in 2014 averaged 30 disposals and less than 1 goal per game. Fyfe averaged 26 disposals and more than 1 goal per game. Given that Fyfe wins his ball in a more contested and clearance winning manner, he wins this matchup.

Dude won a Brownlow while at Geelong... Anyway Ablett>Fyfe.
Fyfe just needs to work on his disposal a little to get to abletts level.

Remember back when we used to argue who was better

Voss , Hird, Buckley

Massive shit fights about their favourite player

No different now between these two, GAblett has the runs on the board and The Rock God is catching up fast. Lets be honest, anyone would love them in their team.

Different style of player so hard to compare, but both undeniable legit top liners.

You cant really draw comparisons until their career's are other though.
