An underage kid to watch out for next year is Brad Scheer. won the 16s div 2 mvp for Queensland as well as the div 2 best and fairest. made his QAFL debut as a 15 year old and earned himself a rising star nomination with a 5 goal effort. strong bodied mid who is rarely outmarked

Yeah but he is a GC academy member if I remember correctly so hardly the place to pump him up.

A total of eight eligible Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy members have been lodged by the Club as potential bid selections ahead of the 2014 NAB AFL National Draft.

The list includes: Harris Andrews (Aspley Hornets/Wilston Grange), Darcy Cameron-Reeves (Redlands/Morningside), Liam Dawson (Aspley Hornets/Wilston Grange), Matthew Hammelmann (Redlands/Morningside), Daniel Henderson (Maroochydore), William Kristelly (Maroochydore), Cameron Stevenson (Aspley/ University of Queensland), Matthew Ubergang (Redlands/ Western Magpies).

All eight of the aforementioned players may be eligible to be taken at the Father/Son and Academy bidding meeting on Monday 6 October.

The Lions will have until Friday 3 October to decide which of the eight players, if any, the Club wishes to nominate ahead of that bidding meeting.
Priorities might have changed a bit with Qld boys,Harris Andrews has 13 clubs interested apparently

I reckon it has as much to do with him being a bit of a late riser. Suspect clubs will know less about him than the more watched picks, so they want to run the rule over him at the combine.

2014 - 15 NAB-AFL Academy Squads:

Level 1 (Qld) - Jack Bowes, Brad Scheer, Jacob Allison and Curtis Marsden

cotter101 know anything about these boys?
Brad Scheer the pick of that lot, playing some really impressive football for Palm Beach in the QAFL. Unfortunately is a GC academy lad, looks like a good one too.

Hmm. That profile seems to be a bit an outlier in terms of where he might be taken in the draft.
For all my scepticism about the perceived draft value of the academy kids, he's one that I can genuinely see being a bit of a 'late riser'. Under the current system I wouldn't be shocked to see the Lions forced to use their 3rd round pick on him, and I think they'd take him. He's got a bit of a Kurt Tippett vibe about him IMO.

Interesting write up from Paige but I don't get overly excited by her player profiles as sometimes they can be a bit over the top. Not to take anything away from Harris as I don't really know a thing about him. Do we have our future full back here? I hope so. I've felt for awhile that he and Dawson and Hammelman would be taken it will be interesting as to where.

If we take Andrews as well as one of Hammelmann or Uebergang, we'd have to be going small with our first pick right?
Depending on who would be there I am starting to get that feeling. So much so that I'm reading about Brayshaw and others.

Yeah, - from that profile

It’s easy to understand why clubs would be so interested in the gigantic key forward, who looks more a ruck prospect rather than a bona fide goal kicking monster.

198 & 91 kg?

From the draft watch on Brayshaw

Ollie Wines/Luke Dunstan/Joel Selwood type inside mid who will play form day 1 and find plenty of the ball. Gets a huge number of tackles each week. Laid 20 in a single game last year or the year before which is even more impressive when you consider that the #1 slight on most top young mids is their defensive efforts.

Will do for me.

If we rate the likes of Andrews and Hammelman highly enough, we will go a mid, likely to be Brayshaw. Wouldnt be a bad outcome. If we still view them very much as prospects who might not turn out, we will still take a Wright if available.

Brayshaw massive risk with the GHF...especially with the North Melbourne connection

I would have thought he'd take any chance to get away from his uncle.

the issue is if more than likely brayshaw isn't available at our pick, there is no other real standout top quality midfielder that warrants a top 4/5

yes exactly what I was worried about brayshaw the flight risk

Is he actually a flight risk or are we just assuming that because of his last name?

If we have pick 4 and Brayshaw isnt there then im happy to grab whoever fell out of the top 3. Really, I think taking the best available at 4 is looking more and more likely the way to go.

Back on topic though, I do wonder how much the academy class alters our overall drafting. Lots of talls this year, so are we tempted to draft a mid instead? Surely when 2 or 3 of your picks are taken on academy players it does have to impact your overall drafting strategy.

I think you also have to look forward as well. Next year and the year after I think we have a few really nice midfield prospects coming through. Next year is also a very good midfield draft in general much more so than this year. If there is a chance to lock up my talls this year I do it and rely on the midfield depth over the next couple to fill any small/medium holes.

Of next year's group only Dennis looks like a draftable prospect from the talls. On the smalls there is Keays, Mosley, Corvo, Wagner and Yusia-Marcic who have all shown a bit a times. The following year we have Allison who made the AIS team for next year and I am yet to see in person but by the sound of it will end up flanker or even tall mid at the next level. Hipwood I also have high hopes for and it will be interesting to see where he ends up height wise. He might be a KP.

It seems like the academy under-agers have filling in a lot as NEAFL top ups for us this year. To those who've kept better track of this, has that happened as often in previous years or are we getting under-agers in more frequently?

On the face of it, it seems like a great idea to get those promising kids playing against the bigger bodies as early as possible.
