Division Two Dreamers

Cain Tickner
Aspley, 194cm, 91kg, 17/4/95
"Cain is also in the Lions' academy. We're hopeful that he will play this weekend against Vic Metro but he hasn't played the last three weeks with an ankle problem. He's also had knee tendonitis earlier this year. He's a key position forward and defender who can turn a game if he's on song."

Isaac Conway
Aspley, 182cm, 85kg, 29/5/95
"Well built midfielder who played every game as a bottom-ager last year. He has been playing as a top-up player for the Brisbane Lions' NEAFL side and he has done pretty well. He was close to being picked for the AIS-AFL Academy level two squad and is in the Brisbane Lions' academy."

Metro also won a key contest with Western Jet midfielder Jake Greiser (19 possessions) blanketing Aspley playmaker Isaac Conway (14 and seven tackles).

Queensland defender Luke Rogerson, from Redland, amassed 30 possessions, being one of only two players from the home side to have at least 20 touches. The designated kicker also had eight rebounds.

Queensland's three tall forwards Jonothan Freeman (three goals), Matthew Hammelmann (two) and Cain Tickner (two) performed especially well given limited opportunities. (Their team lost the inside 50 count 67-39.)

Speedy midfielder Lachlan Weller, the younger brother of Gold Coast player Maverick Weller, was among his state's best with 16 quality disposals.

Defender Aden Rutledge was one of the reasons Queensland remained in the game until the final change, while midfielder Darcy Cameron-Reeves had 19 disposals and five clearances.

A refresher on the Academy list.(with thanks to BigCat2 for the link)

Queensland Scorpions and Hyundai Lions Academy player, Isaac Conway, continues to show that he is one of the top kids in the country, earning the Round 11 Rising Star Nomination.
He was a standout for the Lions Reserves, in their first loss of the season against a strong Gold Coast Suns outfit.
The ex-Sandgate junior says that he was extremely happy with his performance on the weekend and it has held him in good stead for his next Scorpions State Game.
“Yeah I am pretty excited actually. My goal was to just play consistent footy at the Lions or Aspley, but it is a pretty good honour to win the Rising Star against the Gold Coast Suns,” Conway said.
“Each week I just want to perform, do my role, use the footy well, make more tackles and win the contested footy.”
“I’ve been playing consistent footy at the Lions and I have taken a lot of confidence out of the weekend, into this weekend’s state game against SA.”

Jonothan Freeman was Queensland's best, putting in another strong showing against a division one side.

In round one, the 198cm and 95kg forward kicked three goals against Vic Metro, and he again had a presence against South Australia with 17 disposals, eight marks and a goal.

Each state is allowed a certain number of 19-year-olds in their team and Freeman is one of Queensland's, but has developed this season in a draft that does not possess many top-end tall players.

QUEENSLAND

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
7.3 11.6 15.8 22.10 (142)

South Australia:

BEST
Queensland:
Freeman, Dawson, Hay, Weller, Brennan
South Australia:
Aish, Dunstan, Hourigan, Wilson, Battersby, Knight

Freeman rating a mention again- eight marks in a shellacking.

Great to see Dawson in the bests and Hammelmann snag a goal too. Both our AIS reps draft eligible next year.

Dawson showed a bit for the lions ressies last week too.

Dawson played at my club a few years ago. Can't say he was overly talented but the one thing that separated him from others was his will to succeed. He was always doing extras etc. He has since moved on to Aspley for further development no doubt, with better coaches/facilties. Glad he is doing well for himself

Queensland’s Game 2 Standouts

HERE ARE QUEENSLAND’S STANDOUT PLAYERS IN THEIR ROUND 2 GAMES AGAINST SOUTH AUSTRALIA IN THE U18 CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS PAST WEEKEND
Jonothan Freeman:
Listed at 198cm, Freeman was very impressive against South Australia. Had 17 disposals, and really used the football to his team’s advantage. Effective by both hand and foot. Took 8 marks, with several of those being contested. Kicked the ball inside 50 on 5 occasions and was able to kick a goal. Was influential in setting up several scoring shots for his team.

Gribble:
Accumulated a lot of ball, and was able to put the ball to his team’s advantage on most occasions. Had 26 disposals, and 5 clearances. Is able to also spread well and work hard to win a lot of uncontested ball.

Honourable Mention:
Isaac Conway

Tassie spanked Queensland by 69 points.

Did Tickner play? I haven't seen his name anywhere.

For those who watched how did Freeman go?

Tickner did play. was in midfield early and went well. Quiet 2nd qtr. 2nd half shifted onto Wiggins who had kicked 3 goals before half time. Shut him down completely. Plenty of observers said was in our best without getting a lot of posessions. Freeman was very quiet.

Worrying performance getting smashed by Tassie.

Going into this season I thought this was one of the best Qld sides we've had in a while.
