From what I have heard Tickner has come back this year with a vengeance and is absolutely tearing up the training track desperate to get drafted. This year looks promising for QLD good to see James Rayner back in QLD he was an absolute gun. Remember one game of 16s he kicked from outside the 50 aiming for me charging into the goal square, the ball sailed clean over the line easily a 55m+ kick at 16 years old it was incredible that kid can play. Some seriously talented 18 year olds this year. 17 year olds I don't really rate and then of course tickner and betroli-simmons of the 19s. Would not be surprised to a bunch of QLD kids picked up this year I think Lions fans will have something to smile about.
Players to watch this year:
Darcy Cameron-reeves
Liam Dawson
Jackson Dickfos
James Rayner
Matt Hammelman
Cain Tickner
Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds

These six are in my opinion the 6 guys all most likely to get drafted.

Kristelly?

Will be watching their progress with interest.

So much can change in draft year. Look back 12 months ago, Conway and Tickner were in round2/3 contention for the main draft, and most of us hadn't heard of Jono Freeman.

I see of the over-agers, Tickner, Bertoli-Simmonds, Radford, Uebergang and Jackson have been retained.

Good to see Tickner there. However not sure if he can be selected for the U18 Championships (a pre-requisite to be able to be listed as Academy player at the draft), given he's already played as a 17 and 18 year old. Hopefully injury free, he can step it up another level.

Uebergang was highly rated earlier, but took a year off to concentrate on studies (I think Gibbo mentioned this?), so makes sense for him to get another go. Nick Jackson from above posts sounds like he was affected by injury, and will go around again.

Interesting that there are many more names for 17yos than 18yos. Wonder if that reflects the depth of talent, or just how the Academy looks to tighten numbers getting closer to draft age.

Like what others have said, the 17 year old's seem to be lacking in terms of talent compared to previous classes and I think that number has something to do with the tightening of numbers as they get older. There would really only be maybe 5 or 6 of those 17 year olds pushing for 18's selection this year.

Did anyone come down in the end? Watched the first three quarters before I left. Not alot to report in terms of any enigma's popping up, all the usual suspects contributed. Cameron-Reeves had 30 odd in the middle and seriously looks the goods to be picked up at least as a rookie, Jackson and Hammellmann had the backs and forwards covered, Jimmy Rayner kicked 4 as a crumbing forward and oozed composure. Wagner and Keays flew the flag for the under-agers, Keays especially when he played in the midfield. Building on what BrownDog was saying about Kristelly, has a bit to work on but there's definitely enough there to suggest persisting with, really competes and loves the contested stuff, great sight seeing him getting below his knees and trying to tackle blokes half his size.

Although not entirely relevant to us there were a few Gold Coasters that impressed, I'm not sure if anyone remembers but Cody Filewood kicked a few bags for the 16's QLD last year and chimed in with another 5 today, really reminds me of a young LeCras with how he moves and his marking ability for a bloke whos only listed at 182cm. Trask, Weller and a young bloke with dreadlocks by the name of Cassidy Haberfield were all honourable mentions.

I think the 18's team this year will be one of the stronger ones in a while and the Lions and Suns should be looking to cash in.

Uebergang was very highly rated as 16 year old. Will be watching with interest to see how he performs after his year off.

Weller and Dawson the standouts for me in that group followed by Hammelman and Jackson.

From the academy Facebook page:

BL Academy 21.16.142 def. GC Suns Academy 11.5.71
Goalkickers:
Harris Andrews 5, Matthew Uebergang 4, James Rayner, Matthew Hammelman 3, Adam Tipungwuti, Nate Dennis 2, Jackson Dickfos, Max Quigley 1,
Best Players:James Rayner, Nate Dennis, Harris Andrews, Matthew Uebergang, Corey Wagner, Cameron Stevenson

From the above article:

the match is only the second in a series of three that will determine the initial Queensland U18 squad, with next Saturday’s Brisbane Lions Academy v Gold Coast SUNS Academy at Southport still to come.

Might be a good way to spend a few hours if you're nearby and the Giants Swans derby is not your cup of tea.

We are entering what appears to be the second year of our Academy intake being clearly more dominant than that of the Suns.

I have to admit this does not tally with my initial expectations when I first saw the carve-up of the recruitment zones. Long may it continue.

I wonder if we're investing more in it, given we are a lot more reliant on unearthing a couple of local guns than the Suns are.

I was wondering on some more more information on Hammelman. Most probably an old photo but he looks quite lean. I have read that he is still quite strong however and quickish. Would he hopefully fill out to be more like a Jeremy Cameron rather than Bulldog's Grant? I wouldn't a more agile KPF tall as Close and Freeman look like really filling out.
