You're not missing anything - they can indeed, although it's pick 15 in the latter case because we would have moved up to pick 14 to take Keays if we matched.
Oh thanks for that, so the second bid will be the draft value of pick 15

If we get Schache (and more-so Dixon), I feel we'll get Hipwood much later into the draft (if at all). Clubs would need to 100% want him and not simply put in a token bid as we'd more than likely pass if it was too early.

Why would the Lions want Hipwood? Kicked 4 goals against Tasi in the second quarter which swung the game for them, was named in the best players almost every game he has played this year, All Australian, NEAFL Rising Star nominee, 200+ cms in height & still 17 years old, invited to Combine because 5 or more AFL clubs have expressed interest in him....the list goes on. In fact, why would the Lions want any of the Academy boys? Keays, William, Wagner, Choi, Dennis, Buzza all talked about as draftees but really, what club would want them???
What a stupid comment Panthera. We need to snag every one of these boys we have the opportunity to get. We invest big $ into this Lions Academy specifically to develop these young fellas into potential home grown AFL footballers. For me, lets keep them in QLD wherever possible please!!!

Firstly I just like to say that I think the academies are a great thing for footy here in the northern badlands. They cant get everything right, and as they are still young, will re design themselves when they learn things.

Personally, id like to see the Lions lose a couple to other clubs as a wake up call to the academy.

The Academy and AFLQ have set up programs to entice other code converts to AFL, but when the opportunity arose to put one into the academy, they were sitting on their hands for 3 years. Amazingly, Buzza has been on the radar for 3 years, yet only this year he was invited into the academy. That is 2 years he missed out on getting the sort of coaching and instruction etc that he needed.

If that sort of thing continues, not only are the code crossers not getting the support they need, QLD WILL lose players to southern clubs, and very soon. And for the academy, it may be a very good outcome to improve itself.

I hear what you say Tigernova however the Lions Academy cannot take unlimited numbers of boys in this Academy because of financial & several other reasons. I'm sure there are many young fellas out there that have the ability that don't get seen. Its a tough one but I do think this list of academy boys all have the chance to play at the highest level and if the Lions can put them on their list, that's where they should start.

The academy is always going to miss a few genuine talents, it happens with pretty much every development system for every sport in the world. If you rely purely on empirical data you miss out on that special something extra, if you rely purely on subjective assessments by human beings you miss out in other areas. Most systems combine both now and unfortunately that means some real special talents that fit outside the middle of the venn diagram end up being put in the too hard to develop basket - that is where we see what they are made of on a personal basis to still push themselves to get a chance.

Academies will gain more traction as more players hit the AFL. Kids will see it working and as a genuine way to make it. Better the academy comes, the better for footy nation wide.

If Buzza doesn't get drafted Tigernova's head might explode.
I hope Buzza gets drafted also. But, in saying this, I hope 4-5 others get drafted before Buzza simply because IMO they deserve it more than he does at this moment. (not that he doesn't deserve it)

I think our Academy is doing pretty well. Andrews, Dawson, Freeman and Bourke so far with Hipwood, Keays and hopefully another 1 or 2 to make it onto the list. Who knows why Buzza wasn't in the Academy earlier, maybe he wasn't good enough, wrong attitude, don't know. Wasn't invited to the combine either.

Settle down there...but welcome to Australia (as English is obviously not your first language).

Where did I state that the Lions wouldn't want Hipwood? Can't see it anywhere in my post - can you o_O

I stand by my comment that if we secured Dixon via trade and took Schache at either pick 1 or 2, we'd pass on Hipwood if the bid was a high one - we simply wouldn't be able to accommodate him and Keays without ruining the rest of our draft and potentially part of the 2016 draft.

But, again; I never mentioned the Lions not wanting Hipwood :thumbsu:

Agree. I still don't know why people are still so confident that we're gonna snag the both of them.

Greg Swann said just as much, minus a priority pick there is no way the Lions are going to wipe their whole draft out and possibly more for two kids that really, still aren't guarantees to make it, they are still kids just remember.

I think once the Combine wraps up we'll have a much better idea of how the order sits and what the realistic potential cost is for both of them.

Hipwood seems to have the higher ceiling at this point of time, Keays is a ripper, has leadership qualities you can't teach and as people would know I'm one of his greatest fans but I just feel like you can find that sort of player in any draft. Hipwood, to me, has the higher chance of becoming 'the one who got away' if we were to take Keays over him.

It won't wipe out the whole draft, we still have our first pick. Depends on how many list spots we need to fill. Schache/Weitering/Francis, Keays, Hipwood and maybe someone like Wagner at the end of the draft is still a pretty good effort.

If before the draft period we could get rid of all our picks and late picks to 2 picks in the 20's, l would think we would do that deal, especially since we would already have pick 1.

I wouldn't get too worried about the Lions not taking Hipwood. From what I hear, they love him and he loves the club.

Yeah, I here it is the same with Keays, and I think we can be reasonably assured the club will be looking to ensure we have sufficient points to get both on to our list come draft time

I sincerely hope we can get both Keays & Hipwood but also pick up a couple of the other academy boys later in the draft also. When you look at what Harris has done thus far this season, there has got to be others who can replicate him. Go local QLD Boys!!!

Someone has probably stated the answer many times but do academy selections in the rookie draft count as category B rookies and how will that limit us later in the year as it looks like we could rookie 2-3 from our academy?

I'm thinking Weller and Buzza as well as possibly Wagner and William if they aren't taken in the national draft.

They can still count as category A as well. Its just that you can use a cat b spot or cat a depending on list makeup

Just my opinion, but Hipwood looks brittle to me. Not a big robust type.

Durability is one of a players biggest assets. I feel Hipwood at that level will get busted. No one wants injured players on the sidelines.

Dustin Fletcher played 400 games despite looking like he'd snap at any minute. I'm sure he'll be able to build up a decent enough body type in a full time environment.

If we have to incessantly pump up one bloke's tyres, can we do it without letting another bloke's tyres down?
Every time Forward we Go mentions 'preferred players' he always misses one of them...

But when he does mention him, he never misses him...

He has very few posts. Looking at his previous posts leads me to believe he has a vested interest in one of the players he is continually mentioning... But doesn't admit to it..
