Hi all. I'm getting increasingly upset with seeing posts disparaging trans women, either as a cheap joke or a more measured attack. I know this is an issue that a lot of people don't take very seriously, and these forums aren't exactly famous for their sensitivity and diplomacy, but I thought at the very least an outright slur like tr***y should not be acceptable language for anyone to be using on this website.

I've been meaning to say something about this for a while and I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it, but a couple of posts I've just seen have kicked me into action.

Can we make this happen, please? It's a minimum standards of decency thing as far as I'm concerned. That word holds more power than most cis people will ever understand.

Not sure about this word in particular, but we don't usually censor words with double meanings.

Best thing is to just report the posts.

I've heard from a bay 13 mod in the past that use of the word to refer to a transgender woman doesn't contravene any forum rules - if this is wrong, and it does, I'll definitely be reporting it wherever I see it. But since I've seen it far more often used as a slur than anything else, I'd ask that if possible, other options were considered, or at least it was made crystal clear to users and all mods that it's not acceptable. It's a painful word to see.

Thanks for your reply.

It clearly does if it is used as a pejorative. From Bay 13's rules:
"A person's Gender Identity is also not to be attacked or questioned on this board. Please respect every person as an individual poster"

But in some contexts it may not be a breach of that rule.

The word "trans" was used, not "shemale".

Surprising to see you here though.

Huh? I don't know what you mean by your first sentence. Calling someone a "trans" as an insult would be an attack on their gender identity.

... and why is it surprising? o_O

Depends on context though. As the Bay 13 mod referenced in the OP, I know for a fact that with the initially reported post, that was not the case at all (so much so that I thought the account was another of your Eliases ).

OK. Not sure why you would think that, but I am not the OP and I don't know the specific incident she is referring to. I just thought I would back her up because "trans" should be considered to be against the forum rules if it were deliberately used as an insult. It is like how you don't call a homosexual a "homo".

My point is very much that the word is a slur regardless of whether any offence is intended or not - I understand that people might not be aware of this, but like many other slurs that are forbidden on the forums, it just should not be allowed in print.

And I am trans, but I should mention that I'm not a trans woman. I don't really want to get into my own personal identity on here, but people are probably assuming I'm female, and I'd rather nip that in the bud. I'd rather be referred to in gender neutral language, please.

Really? Never heard that.

What is the preferred term at the moment?

Ah sorry I missed this on my first read - if you're talking about a transgender woman, that's what you call her. Transgender woman, or trans woman - or even, shockingly, just call her a woman.

I'm confused now.

So instead of 'that word', what's the word at the moment?
