Adelaide Oval - Discussion

And it was the only opportunity Adelaide had to see the Wallabies in the WC. And only one of two Wallabies games in Adelaide that I remember in that late-1990s to early 2000s period, the other against the Pacific Islanders team or something like that.

Went to the Pacific Islanders match, was a good crowd there considering it rained

I am surprised neither the Rugby League or Union have trialed a game at Adelaide Oval since the redevelopment . I know it is not a big market but I would of thought a one off game to at least test the market would be a good.

Canterbury-Bankstown only got 10K to Adelaide Oval pre-redevelopment when they played there in 2010-2011 (ironically it wa the redevelopment that saw them stop coming to SA).

Coopers Stadium would probably be a better fit for the rugby codes.

Has to happen in my opinion. For two reasons, one because it would be great but also Memorial Drive looks so tired.

Not to mention Titanium Security Arena and Priceline Arena also looking a little tired (the new scorecube and lighting is pretty much the only thing that's been done to TSA since it opened). Consolidating it all into one 10-12k state of the art arena next door to Adelaide Oval would be fantastic - better than some unrealistic plan for a soccer stadium on Adelaide Oval No. 2.

IMO they haven't had a game there for three reasons... 1. Probably aren't a fan of playing on an oval, 2. The SMA and the AFL clubs are probably against it and 3. A crowd of 50k in a state that isn't a rugby state would put the NRL crowds of 10k for the other weekends games to shame and the NRL wouldn't want that.
An NRL game at the Oval wouldn't get 50k. I'd say it would be more like 20-25k, considering NRL games at AO 5 odd years ago only got 10k. The only league match that would sell out would be SoO or the GF, both which are very unlikely to ever come to the Oval. A Wallabies match would be interesting. I can see it getting over 40k if we played a big side on a Saturday night.

I for one would happily go see a NRL or Wallabies game at AO. I think 20-25k is realistic for an NRL game, but could get more or less depending on who it was, and how it was promoted. That last few NRL games at AO were pretty poorly marketed in my opinion, and the crowd was a reflection of that.

They should be playing at Coopers. I watched the All Blacks play there against SA many years ago and it was an excellent venue to watch it at. Need to do some work on putting a roof on the stands however.

I assume you mean Hindmarsh rather than the Parade! It would be an excellent venue for Rugby, though I think to maximise attendance they'd want to take advantage of the Adelaide Oval brand, even if it is a inferior venue to watch the match.

The only problem with Coopers for rugby is there is very little room for the in-goal area.
Most shared soccer/rugby venues (Allianz, Suncorp), the soccer pitch ends a little ways into the field as they're built a bit longer to accommodate a 120m rugby pitch plus safe space before the fence.

I believe Coopers Stadium management have looked at slightly extending the field to attract rugby at the ground.

Has anyone noticed that the scoreboard operators have been doing things a little differently during the Big Bash compared to previous years?
Traditionally the team batting first is listed at the top of the LHS (where they list the innings scores), and the number of overs a bowler has bowled is updated at the start of their over (eg the first time a bowler comes up to bowl they put a "1" in the "Overs" column on the scoreboard.
On NYE I noticed that they weren't putting an over number in until the end of each over, so it's "overs completed" not "number of overs (or part thereof) bowled) - which could cause an issue if a bowler goes off partway through his fourth over, and then later the Captain thinks he can bowl that guy one more over.
On Friday I noticed that Adelaide were listed at the top of the scoreboard even though they batted second.
In the example below, NSW are first as they're batting first, and Christian is currently bowling his first over.
Wondering why this has changed...

(While I'm at it, glad they eventually started putting "Adelaide" on the LHS not "Strikers", like "New Sth Wales" not "Blues"; but I don't like that the away teams don't get a coloured nickname plate up the top like the Blues. Just the Strikers.)

I've noticed that too about the overs. Don't really get the change. Always been used to the old method.

Reckon Adelaide being listed first on the scoreboard was an error - be interesting to see how they list it for the Renegades match if the Strikers bowl first again.

I've noticed that in recent years (pretty much since the Western Stand development), the new scoreboard signage appears to be cheaper and more mismatching with the scoreboard. The BBL team signs they have (and they don't have all teams) are more shorter than the state/country counterparts. And then with the BBL ones, the Strikers, Renegades and Hurricanes have coloured signs (albeit the Hurricane's one uses a purple so dark it looks black in daylight), the Sixers have a black sign, and there's no sign at all for the Stars, Heat, Thunder and Scorchers. They should complete the set for the BBL sides - the comp is here to stay so there's no real excuse. Also, for some reason the country name plates for international matches are being repainted with team names in Arial.

Also, the AFL team signs - which get used for BBL matches where appropriate i.e. Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney (both Sixers and Thunder get the same Sydney sign), Melbourne (both Stars and Renegades get the same Melbourne sign), are in done in a tiny sized Impact font, which make them look cheap and tacky (especially when below is the older style 'Goals', 'Behinds' and 'Points' signs, which fit well with the scoreboard. In this day and age where any font is pretty much possible, surely they can get the right font for the scoreboard so that there's consistency across the board. If they keep changing the fonts whenever they need a new sign it's going to start to look like a ransom note, and start to lose some of it's heritage value.

The other bugbear with the AFL team signs is that they're not in the team colours (the SANFL team signs are). Would be nice to add the colours to each team's nameplate, and then have a separate plain set for the BBL sides.

With the megabucks the SMA makes out of the ground, it shouldn't cost that much for consistent fonts, and a bit of coloured paint to have the scoreboard back to it's true glory.

Firstly I'm not sure how much the SMA is really worried about the scoreboard, to be honest.
I've also wondered why we can't have "CROWS v BOMBERS" on the top and then "Adelaide" and "Essendon" in the scores down the Bowlers column for footy.
One day when I'm semi-retired I'm going to run the scoreboard so I'll have you as a presentation consultant :thumbsu:

Sorry to change the subject, but I can't think of a more appropriate place to ask these questions!

I, and 4 other friends, intend to drive to Adelaide for the first 2 AFL games at AO - heard great things about the stadium, great vibe, and very picturesque (not a "cookicutter, boring, monlithic" design).

Several questions please:-
We want to experience the "old standing room"experience there on the hill. Do we need to prebook 5 tickets for that section, to be guaranteed to gain entry there -or are we safe to buy on the day? First 2 games likely to be sold out? And does the attendant to the hill check tickets (in case we can only buy seats)?

Can anyone recommend a very good caravan park, no more than 45 minutes drive from AO/cityCBD, with a spa and swimming pool? Perhaps between Adelaide and the Hills?

Anyone like to nominate Adelaide's best 3 restaurants that cook meat over CHARCOAL, happy to pay top $ for top quality?

Also, Adelaide's best 3 sea food restaurants, specialising obviously in local produce? Again, happy to pay top $ for top quality.

And finally, Adelaide's best fish & chip shop?

Thankyou.

Any ticket will let you stand in the GA, be it on the hill or elsewhere

First 2 games likely to be sold out?
Assuming you mean Crows games, I'd say both Round 1 vs GWS (beacuse it's round 1) and Round 4 vs Essendon (because it's a Sat night game) will probably sell out. That said provided you grab tickets not long after the on sale date I doubt you'd have a problem.

No

Not sure if it has a spa or not but West Beach Caravan Park is pretty good. Or there is the Windsor Gardens Caravan park which is close to public transport. Alternatively the Adelaide Caravan Park is within walking distance.

I'll let others wade into the debate on best fish & chips, etc!

We will attend 26.3 Crows game, and 2.4 Power game at AO.

2.4 PA v. Freo. likely to sell out also?

How far in advance are GA Standing tickets made available for general public?

We are driving over, so don't need to rely on public transport in Adelaide.

Thankyou

port v freo you'll be fine to get a walk up ticket. don't there has ever been a sell out with this fixture in Adelaide. lol's.

Crows game you'd probably want to get in the day they go on sale, that's usually about 4 weeks before the game for memory.

..........

Try Levi Park Caravan Park 4 kms NE of Adelaide CBD in Walkerville. You are on the banks of the River Torrens. I don't think they have a pool
http://www.levipark.com.au/

or West Beach about 10 kms west from town, almost on the beach, next to the airport but not under the flight path. They have a couple of 'resorts' and are called different names Big 4 Adelaide Caravan Park and Adelaide Shores Caravan Park. They have a pool.

My favourite restaurant in Adelaide is probably Estia at Henley Beach, Greek restaurant

Nothing fancy, but great fresh seafood and excellent lamb and goat. And on the esplanade to boot.

A fish and chips cafe at Henley Beach, a 15 minute walk away claims to be the best in SA, forget its name

I reckon that is the Stunned Mullet. I have heard good things about it but havent been there the 6 years since I've moved back to SA.

That's the one.

I've eaten there once. I'm not a f&c connoisseur so I can't compare it to much
