Unless all the fig trees behind the Hill start dying and the scoreboard gets into a state of disrepair, I can't see them ever building a northern stand.

I think the most realistic option down the track would be to knock down and rebuild the western stand. This stand was designed long before there was consideration to play AFL matches at AO, so only cricket was in mind.

A rebuilt western stand to a similar capacity of the eastern stand would add an extra 5k seats or so.

Not sure why it is the same capacity as Footy Park was.

When footy is bigger than ever in Adealide.

Imagine if the away team members of a showdown could get tickets.

Then there is Crow´s members on waiting lists.

Then there is finals. Ever tried getting a ticket to a finals games at AO. Not easy.

Should of been 60k at least

So what. I attended the SCG and watched the slow and continual building of stands around the ground at the expense of historic features.
People put up the same sentiments (they're not "arguments") and eventually they are swamped by convenience, practicality and money.

Can guarantee none of those 'historic features' were heritage-listed. Hence they were able to be removed.

The scoreboard, in particular, is heritage-listed and won't be touched.

As has been suggested before, the next move should be to rebuild the Western Stand to mirror the Eastern Stand.

Do what they did with the MCG scoreboard - move it somewhere it can still be used and people can see it (Canberra in this case - not ideal, should be somewhere in Melbourne, but not the worst result). The old SCG scoreboard is going to be re-used somewhere in the SCG precinct - just not as the scoreboard for the cricket or the football.

You're both VERY uninformed about the residents of North Adelaide and their inability to accept any kind of change in their neighbourhood

These are the same residents that forced the Adelaide Oval to formerly have 'retractable' light towers to ensure that their view of the city wasn't blocked from the top of the hill

The MCG is a horrible venue, especially the nosebleeds, your pretty much watching the screens, not the actual play. You might as well be home. Big doesn't mean better. The scoreboard is one of the landmarks of the ground and world famous - especially in the cricketing world.

From a cricket perspective, it's still a very comprehensive scoreboard. In any format, the scoreboard still provides a comprehensive summary of where the game is at that you don't get with modern scoreboards.

But the AO is not the MCG is it. raising the capacity of AO doesn't involve "nosebleed" stands but rather a continuation of what's there. In effect, it makes the stadium more uniform.
The MCG is a great stadium at levels comparable with a full AO.

60-65k capacity would be great, but no need for more than that.

The Western stand needs augmenting first (keep the bottom bit with the walkway and lower sections are already good) it's the upper parts of the stands that need replacing possibly by building a concentric set of brick covered (aqueduct) arches around the avenue behind the stand to support a structure to build on. Make more of the avenue lit and under cover, the height of the western stand should be at least that of the eastern stand, and have more overlooking bars both ways at the top too with more eating options probably better cover from wind on the back of the southern side of western stand and leave it open/shaded over back of north side. All said and done that might at best get to 57k for footy and 60k for the ashes (with the village green area included). If you can get the camera stands on the hill further up and behind the trees that might help, the hill used to go back further too beside the scoreboard this area needs to be touched up even if it is restricted viewing

For crowds under 50k Perth Oval is unrivalled.
Comfort, viewing, atmosphere and concession stands.
AO and MCG are central though.

30k at the MCG is awful, 30k at AO is not great but still feels way more alive in large part due to the hill still being full.
I'd love a larger capacity but not at the expense of the hill.

Western Stand re-do would be tough. It's a pretty clunky set up though that was really only built for the idea of test matches once a year and a few hit and giggle games. The second level with the function rooms (no toilets in the function rooms btw) is a bit of a shitshow. Dunno how they'd do it, whether you added to it or what, it's tricky with the heritage back wall I guess?

You wouldn't do the Riverbank, the seats up the top there are the worst in any sporting arena I've been to in the world.

The trees at the back of the hill are the problem I guess. Would be nice to add some seating up the back behind the hill or something if that was possible but don't think it would be.

I dunno how many more they'd get to games anyway? Without checking how often do they get over 53,000?

Also have to laugh at those suggesting it's superior to the G in any way, gotta be trolling or the inferiority complex going crazy. You don't have to wait 20+ mins for a beer at the G, which you quite often do have to do at Adelaide Oval, says it all.

AO is consistently rated the best or up there as the best cricket venue in the world and the same goes for footy

That aside, you're spot on, Western Stand re-do is the only sensible way to increase capacity. Also agree, not sure it's needed, would only hit 60k plus a few times a year and would risk buggering up the nice heritage reno they managed with the Western stand

Not really the MCG's fault you have bad vision. Most people have no trouble following the action from even the back row without using the screens.
