From the Advertiser:
Council in to bat for oval upgrade
By Civic Reporter JEMMA CHAPMAN

PLANS for a $57 million redevelopment of Adelaide Oval were supported by Adelaide City Council last night.
As the landowner, the council unanimously voted to give "in principle support" to the upgrade by the South Australian Cricket Association.
The plans will now need approval from the State Government's Development Assessment Commission.
The redevelopment, which will lift the ground's capacity from 30,000 to 40,000, will include:
NEW public grandstands, to seat 4600, with tent-like roofs at the eastern side of the grounds.
RAISING the western grandstand from one to three tiers, doubling seating capacity to 12,000. All heritage features of the stand will be retained.
A 700-SEAT members' dining room, available for public functions, to be located in the middle of the western grandstand at a raised height.
SACA and the Government are discussing funding for the project. The association wants the Government to put $17 million into the project.
In moving the motion to support the redevelopment, councillor Bert Taylor said SACA had been "very patient and demonstrated a very strong commitment to getting something that's not only going to service their needs but is not going to spoil the ambience around Adelaide Oval".
"I can't wait to see it come to fruition," he said.
Councillor Richard Hayward, who seconded the motion, said the redevelopment would ensure Adelaide had a "world-class sporting event in the middle of the city".
SACA chief executive Michael Deare said there had been "massive consultation" with the public and council to devise plans that would please almost everybody.
He said the plans had been re-drawn, including reducing the height of the eastern grandstands, to take into account concerns of the council and the public."
The redevelopment plans used to be on display at the Council offices in Pirie St until last month. I used to have a look at them each time I walked past and they look great. But $57 million?? What else are they going to put on there? I don't think they are ever going to get AFL footy. Is the whole thing over the top? Thirty years too late?
