Beattie would be a phenomenal asset on the board. Especially when we need to lobby government for funding for our new facility.

The guy is exceptionally well regarded and a lot of people owe him favours.
Potential/likely change of govt might be interesting, with both he and Milner on the board.

Regardless, he would be a very good get.

Oh god, 95% of the comments on news.com.au articles are just completely outrageous, I'm sure it won't be long before someone on there blames this on multiculturalism.

I started reading the comments and it made my head hurt.

The internet sure is full of wowsers. Young Liberals must have been up early this morning

Exactly who cares if he was Labor, Liberal or any other political party. If he can help the Lions and do a good job for the club I'd be all for it.

In all honesty though it would be great to have the ilk of Beattie on the board, his 'reach' in QLD is great and would only help us financially, maybe even get a mining magnate or 2 to chip in a few bob ;)

I just realised the number of our losses each year has risen proportionally with the number of boat people that come to Australia. I'm going to go post about it on News now.

this:thumbsu: with his new job from Gillard, he is the man to sell the Lions to those with the brass.

I saw this on twitter from the Lions account;

Lions News: Chairman Angus Johnson told tonight’s Hyundai Platinum Club that ex-Qld Premier Peter Beattie is NOT being targeted for a place on the Club’s Board

So Hammo is not just a hack, he is a liar:thumbsd:

I'd rather have Beattie on the board then Aker. A bit disappointed we did not approach Beattie, he was one of the more popular politicians in the last decade.

What is more interesting is the appointment of Damien Bourke to the Board’s Football sub-committee.
Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Damien have a son who potentially is a top 25 pick and rising in this year's draft or a zone selection possibility?

Apparently the barriers for us there are a Father/Son pick to another club and GC's zone selection.

Lions' displeasure at AFL grows
March 11, 2013
Greg Davis

FURIOUS Brisbane chairman Angus Johnson will demand an explanation from the AFL for the "indefensible" decision to hold this Friday's NAB Cup grand final in Melbourne.

The Lions finished on top of the table after the preliminary rounds of the pre-season competition as the only undefeated side but must still travel to Etihad Stadium for the decider against Carlton.

An angry Johnson also could not hide his disgust at the decision when contacted by The Courier-Mail yesterday and said he would be "expressing displeasure" to AFL Commission chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and chief executive Andrew Demetriou.

"It's just totally unfair and indefensible, completely indefensible," Johnson said.

"I couldn't believe it when I heard the reason we are being forced to play in Melbourne again was ticket sales. That is an incredibly short-sighted view that is difficult to fathom."

Lions sack coach to stop player walkout
August 13 2013
Andrew Hamilton

Voss had received repeated assurances from chairman Angus Johnson that his job was safe until the end of the year. Johnson was booed and heckled by sections of the crowd at a Lions function last night when he announced the sacking. One guest at the Lions gala auction night at the Brisbane Convention Centre yelled out "sack the board" during Johnson’s statement.

When Johnson was describing how difficult the decision was to axe the club’s favourite son, one guest yelled: "well, quit".

Johnson paid tribute to Voss’ contribution to the club and said plans to find his replacement were advancing.

"We have gone through what’s been a very robust and comprehensive process. Personally, and I know all of the other board members would feel this way, it’s been an incredibly difficult decision for me and the other directors."

EXCLUSIVE: THE Brisbane Lions board has been split by a powerful faction, led by Leigh Matthews, who aim to topple under-siege chairman Angus Johnson.
Directors Paul Williams, Mick Power and Matthews are running a ticket to take control of the embattled club and have vowed to make a fresh approach to Swans 2005 premiership coach Paul Roos.
Williams and Power this morning called on Johnson and fellow directors Linda Nash and Cameron Milner to stand down.
The trio refused and the issue looks headed for an emergency general meeting.

Brisbane Lions set to announce loss of $1.5 million
November 25, 2013
Andrew Hamilton

BRISBANE is today set to announce an annual loss of about $1.5 million.

The Lions have battled financially since the premiership years ended and have endured an extended run of million dollar-plus losses, but today's expected announcement could represent the start of a recovery for the embattled AFL club.

The Lions' losses were predicted to fall well beyond $2 million this year.

Brisbane received $1.85 million from the AFL Commission to beef up its football department after the drawn-out board dispute was resolved when chairman Angus Johnson stood down and was replaced by a new board headlined by new chairman Bob Sharpless, from the Springfield Land Corp and club legend Leigh Matthews.

And AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou last week told the Courier-Mail additional league funding would be forthcoming.

"We think now the board dispute has been finalised the Lions will start to go places,'' he said.

"They have a new chairman in Bob Sharpless who is very impressive and we're committed to continuing to support them.''

The Lions and the AFL are in negotiations with the Federal Government for $15 million towards the club's proposed new headquarters at Springfield.

Brisbane officials believe rent costs at the Gabba are prohibitive and the move will have a significant bearing on the club's bottom line.

Less of a loss than expected which is a positive, as well as more funding on top of $1.85mil that's coming our way. Hopefully they can sort out the Springfield project and we'll be well on our way.

I haven't seen Matty in Brisbane: Schwab
February 20, 2014
Mike Whiting

PETER Schwab has hit back at Matthew Lloyd after the Essendon great claimed the Brisbane Lions were an unhappy club.

Speaking on Melbourne radio station 3AW on Wednesday, Lloyd said the Lions' 131-point loss against Hawthorn in the NAB Challenge "might not be a one off".
"I think they're in for a world of pain this year. I'm not sure that they're happy," Lloyd said.

"New coach, a player exodus - I'm not sure that everything is that happy up there in Brisbane. I think they're in for a tough year."

Schwab, the new head of coaching and development at the Lions, hit back on Thursday, saying Lloyd had no right to make those calls from afar.

"I haven't seen Matty in Brisbane lately, so how would he know?" Schwab said.

"Matty was a great player, he's paid for his opinions and often opinions aren't based on facts.

"I don’t think any person outside of Brisbane can talk about culture, because they don't know, they're not here."Schwab said the Lions were not annoyed by Lloyd's comments, although the club would be calling him later in the day for clarification.

While praising the addition of Leigh Matthews to the Lions board, Schwab took another veiled swipe at Lloyd.

"It's just great to have someone of Leigh's experience available," he said.

"And he does know Brisbane. He can make some comments on Essendon which he mightn't know, but he can actually make some comments on Brisbane because he does know."
