Well excuse my lake of knowledge, but today I was researching ADSL connection as im fed up with dial up. After I learnt all about it, and the expensive price! I also noticed that a special modem for ADSL connection was required and was painfully left wandering what differance's was there? Can anyone speak from experiance with this matter and please satisfy my un-controllable desire to know !?

well that sounds sucky, because if your modem needs to be compatible with the ISP then they can sell you there **** for premium price with your hands tied behind your back!

My original Bigpond cable modem is not suitable for use with Optus, despite both Optus and Bigpond saying that there would be no problem.

I'm fed up with badly trained support personnel who have no fear of having to take any responsibility should they give out dodgy advice.

The best way around this is to buy a router.

All ISP's should support the Cisco 827 as this seems to be the common device that they all support.

The only thing is price. They are not cheap.......but they are the most configurable should you want to run any services on your DSL connection in the future.

Be aware also that DSL can come in one of two protocol types
PPPoE or PPPoA. Not all DSL 'modems' support both protocols.

Telstra uses PPPoE whereas AAPT/Connect uses PPPoA. I don't know what Optus uses.

Geeee, there seems to be alot more about modems than what I thought! Thanks for the knowledge. I might throw a few of these questions at the ISP's and see what they say!

It wouldn't have a maximum speed of 28.8k would it? If so....time to upgrade to a 56k modem (it's twice as fast...theoretically).

Otoh, DSL is way, way, way faster than dialup but you need a special DSL modem or router.

Thanks for that site, Executioner.

Are some of these 'lesser known' broadband dealers legit?

They've got some good prices ($64 - 3gb included with Apple Broadband .... works out a fair bit cheaper than dial up when you take into account 2nd phone line + calls + ISP charges), but the savings will be useless if they go bust and I have to fork out another $200 for a connection fee with a different company.

And another question: Most of the ISP sites say it's self installation of the modem or you have to pay extra ... would a semi computer literate person like me be able to install it? And will you guys help me when I inevitably muck something up? :D

Dunno anything much at all about apple but on whirlpool today there is a story on them.

Internode seem to get a lot of good feedback from their customers if you have a read of the forums there.

Best to ask the mob you'd go with about installation as I'm just a hack and aint no PC expert.

From my personal experience with ADSL i don't think much of Telstra and hope Optus' ADSL comes out soon and is similar to their cable.

Don't touch Telstra/Bigpond Cable/ADSL. Its not worth it. Its not reliable, its too expensive for what you get, and the service is shocking. Optus cable is a better solution if you can get it. It has no cap (download limit) just a netstats, which I suppose is a form of cap. If you don't download mp3s, patches for games/programs, demo's of programs, then perhaps telstra is an option. Optus for 64 dollars a month (I think thats how much I pay) gives you a lot more for your money ;)

Also you get 17 or so dollars off optus tv, which now has AFL.

Look for longevity in the ISP business. But most of them are reselling either Telstra or Optus services (DSL). There are other DSL providers such as XYZed and Request DSL but they essentially wholesale.

If you want DSL.....shop around. If you want cable then i think most people would agree that OPTUS is the best value.

3gb is not much......if you are using a modem that's a lot because of the time it takes to d/l crap. Otoh, if you've got a connection with grunt you start to become a bit like a kid in a candy shop and before you know it 3gb is used up very quickly. 10gb is a more realistic amount of traffic if you are into d/l mp3's and game demo's.

If you are unsure of your own technical capabilites, get it right the first time by having it installed for you.

It's worth it because:
1. You get to use what you are paying for straight away.
2. If it keels over, then the provider will have to fix it. If you install it and it doesn't work, who are you gonna turn to for immediate rectification?

Forget about asking here for detailed information on how to fix your problem.......it's too slow and inefficient. Nothing beats someone being at your computer and fixing the problem for something that could be that serious.

In my case thou, I am NOT able to get cable, I live in a unit!

I assumed it was that, I haven't really been reading the long posts as I'm just alt tabbing in the library at school ;)

ADSL isn't worth getting if you download a lot of patches, demos of programs etc... might have to stay with 56k if all you do is forum surf. :)

Its got nothing to do with what I do now! Ive got unlimited download, and im getting 2Gb per month, im downloading heaps of music and small video footage, and game demos, so what? I say that im sick of dial-up, and want some speed. If I had optus cable I would download movies! wouldnt you? so what? I cannot get cable but am looking everywhere for an alternative, and soi far ADSL is the most likely. does that help ronnie?

If you are doing 2GB a month on dialup you can normally multipy that by 5 in terms of what you would do on Broadband

Wait 6 months till Optus get their ADSL service up and running and see what their plans are as ADSL is a ripoff as of now with Tel$tra's facist like download caps

You can get 4.5 gig with internode or 10 gig* with netspace for about the same price as bigpond ADSL 512/128

*3 peak 7 off peak

You have no comprehension of broadband usage vs. dial-up usage then do you?

Others say you can multiply it by 10 times even, 5 times is being conservative

I d/l around 16-18gb a month on cable and only ever did 1.5-2gb max on dialup such is the speed difference
