I know this is very very minor thing in the scheme of things but what happens now?!

Sadly it's all over

Where will Rashid go?

I think every country would been jumping to take him.

Amazing how quickly team rose & developed quality t20 players.

20 years in country to stop Taliban taking over & as soon we withdraw they take over - what a waste of time

Well looks like the test will not be going ahead

I do not believe the Australian government will engage in diplomatic relations with the new taliban afghan govt and unfortunately sport will suffer

will not suprise me if the icc cuts off all ties to afghan cricket

As others have said, compared to the wider world issues it's a small thing but it will be very sad if (and likely when) this results in Afghan cricket being no more.

There were real green shoots, and that was with them never being able to host international cricket in Afghanistan itself.

I have a feeling Afghani cricket will survive. We may end up with a situation where the Afghanistan national team is represented by a cricketing board which isn't endorsed by the current Afghanistan govt.

Would love to see the ICC step in to see what they can do to prevent the cricket team entering a tailspin here. Though if the plight of teams such as Zimbabwe & Kenya is anything to go by, they could be screwed.

They even have some really picturesque cricket grounds in places such as Kabul. Pity we mightn't see any cricket played there.

I just saw a very distressing video of a few Afghan kids falling in the air from an American military plane. That's how bad the situation there is.

What are the chances of Australia or the UK recognising the Taliban govt.. Can't see that happening and that Afghanistan tour is pretty much done and dusted now I guess. Far more important things than cricket for Afghanistan at the moment.

This article seems to show some hope for Afghanistan cricket moving forward, even if England, Australia & NZ mightn't play against them ever again.

Sucks about all of the human rights that are set to be taken away from women in the country though.

Ppl probably won't even be allowed to play

NEW DELHI: Cricket will not be a casualty in the wake of drastic political change in Afghanistan, assured country's cricket board CEO Hamid Shinwari, saying the Taliban "love" and "support" the game.

Speaking to PTI from Kabul, Shinwari also assured that the members of the national team and their families are safe as the Taliban took over the reins of the country.

Star players including Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Zadran are playing in the UK in the 'Hundred' tournament.

"Taliban loves cricket. They have supported us since the beginning. They did not interfere in our activities," said Shinwari.

That article isn't reassuring for a variety of reasons

Even if something can happen, where do the next set of Afghanistan players come from? Definitely not Afghanistan.
And they were on the verge of getting a womens team up and running.

They should still come from Afghanistan I would imagine, considering the Taliban leaders have gone on record to state they are in favour of cricket. But yeah, women's cricket over there is dead in the water.

Be nice if the reporter asked one question about plans for women's cricket.
What question would you like answered? If I really put my mind to it, I think I could magically intuit an accurate response for you.

Whatever the outcome heads will roll.
It could be our saviour as far as gaining a world class spinner.

Very poor choice of words ;)

Are you talking about Rashid Khan? I heard someone say he lives in Adelaide when he's not playing. Not sure if true though. If he never plays for Afghanistan he would make more than enough money playing franchise cricket anyways.

Isn't women's cricket a requirement to have ICC full membership?

It turns out there's not much you can't get away with when the parties of god are involved.

I suspect there's a clause to the effect of:
If the development of Women’s cricket is not possible for cultural or religious reasons, the Member is to provide written notice of this to the Regional Development Manager along with a supporting letter from a relevant government department.

Just another bullshite situation protected by religious discrimination bills.

It'll be fascinating what Taliban will do with cricket in Afghanistan as it's become very popular, especially amongst the youth. It looks like Taliban have plenty of young fighters on their side, so they might not want to stop people from playing cricket as it might disengage the youth they have on their books atm.

They might use cricket as a means to show they've changed from Taliban 1.0. It won't be recognised by the international cricket community, as India hates the Taliban and it's one of Pakis proxy army. But ****, I feel soo bad for anyone connected with the shit happening in that country. Rashid has said he has family still in Afghanistan and doesn't know what to do. Tragic.

Yeah just sounds like a bunch of quotes from people too scared/smart to say anything bad about the Taliban.
Be nice if the reporter asked one question about plans for women's cricket.
On one hand you cite the idea that the cricket officials might have reason to be scared of the Taliban, on the other you're suggesting that a journalist expose a person's true beliefs in an environment when such could get them killed.

Cricket, and association football, were the only permitted sports (for men) under the old Taliban. The international reaction (ICC, governments, individual boards) may be the more immediate issue, especially if the Taliban starts using the cricket team for propaganda purposes.
Players will likely be keen to get out, with their families. Those that aren't already based outside the country.

Cricket really does get some horrible support at times. The Taliban being one, and Mugabe even regarded it as the the only civilising influence the British had brought to Zimbabwe.
