AFL 09- Please?

Honestly, the biggest thing for me is also one of the simplest ones; Varied animations for the same action.

Example : Old AFL games had a grand total of one or maybe two animations for a "speccy" mark. Repetitive animations of one of the greatest spectacles of our great game ruin the experience of AFL as a video game.

There should be 4 or 5 different animations for high marks, and they should vary depending on whether it's a pack mark, or just a one on one contest, etc etc.

Just like there should be different tackle animations, different snap-kick animations, etc etc.

Does anyone know more about this Bigant are they any good?
Their record isn't great to say the least, their games have received nothing but poor reception, examples:

Sprint Cars 2: Showdown at Eldora, got a rating of 2.3 from IGN with them saying "When 95% of the game is about as entertaining as getting blackout drunk and body surfing on gravel, it should be avoided at all costs."

Hellboy: Science of Evil was savaged by reviewers and gamers alike, averaging a 47, 42 and 44 on Metacritic across the PS3, 360 and PSP, IGN again with one of the more savage reviews saying "If you're the biggest Hellboy fan in the world, do not spend $60 on this game; if you're Ron Perlman, do not play the free copy I hope they sent you; and if you're Hellboy, seek vengeance on the people who did this to you."

In conjunction(Or apart of, not too sure on this one) with Krome Studios they helped to develop The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, which was well recieved for the GBA, but they didn't develop the GBA version, only the critically bashed PS2, Wii and DS versions.

The first Sprint Cars incarnation was developed by Big Ant as well, poorly recieved again, with a review from Games Radar stating "This is a racing game that's not fun. It's basic, tasteless, and doesn't use any creativity with its cool cars it's focusing on in the game."

And again with Krome Studios developed The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, for the GBA, once again critically bashed with GameSpot giving it a 3.9, stating "The game is too short, the combat is way too repetitive, and the graphics and audio are years behind the curve."

So their record isn't great, but they do have 4 titles in development, including the AFL game, so let's hope they can pick up the slack.

I know someone who is designing it - happy to pass on some feedback on behalf of the BF community (they are probably reading this thread either way I imagine).

Karl can you please ask your contact or someone in his team to make a post here updating us? Just the broad timeline (are they serious about an 09 release??) and approach (what are they hoping to achieve for their first release??) would be plenty at this stage.

One of the most important things to me is a list management tool. Which would give us the ability to manage each teams list, to reflect how they currently look. i.e. add in traded and drafted players.

Well thats unfortunate, I really hope this new game is a improved version of AFL 2007. I rather enjoy the current game and find it fun and playable, I find myself playing all the time it's the only reason why I have ps2.

it's the only reason why I have ps2.

Same here! The next decent AFL game will mean the end of my PS2, go figure. Still can't believe there's not a single PS2 emulator on the market given how old the hardware is now. Have given up waiting for Sony to re-introduce BC on PS3 although obviously they are going to do it one day.

I must admit we got a heck of a lot out of conversing with you guys here on BF throughout the years. It's important to stay in touch with the passionate fans out there who'll buy the game.

BTW I have heard a few things about the new game from people I know in the biz and all I can say is be patient people and don't expect the earth. Give 'em a chance to build...

How do you overcome the fundamental problem that it is so easy to just kick a torp and outmark the opposition then go back and kick a goal?

This is how I'd do it.

Each player will have a 'Strength', 'Body on Body' and 'Marking' rating and combine those factors with the players height + weight that that accounts for their ability to mark.

Defenders will have 'Strength', 'Body on Body' and instead of marking being the factor in the contest, they will have a 'Spoiling' rating, in addition with their height + weight...

(In addition, players could have a 'Positioning' and 'Awareness' rating that could affect the outcome of the contest as well)

Now. If I am the forward trying to mark, we'll use the Left Analogue (LA) to move the players body, and use the Right Analogue (RA) to apply either bumps or jostle with the opponent for the ball. That gives the user the complete control of the player on the field. Defenders work pretty much the same, using LA and RA to apply pressure on the forward.

That's how I'd do it anyway...

When the player marks it, the game should automatically give quick hand pass / kick options marked with O and Triangle (as in, a player swoops around the guy with the ball looking for a quick give with a symbol marked above his head beind O or Triangle... that'd make it very easy to give the game fast flowing action) or play on using X and have Square to slow up the play or go back for goal or something.

Thank you. Jesus it almost makes me throw up reading what people wanna see in this game. They're building an engine from scratch, let them get the basics right before they attempt an EA like game.

This isn't going to be a miracle folks, but if we just let them see what they can do without putting too much pressure on them for things like local leagues then I'm sure they'll give us a better overall game that they can expand on in the future.

From what we've been told, the engine won't be built from scratch, it will be a Rugby League engine ported over and then tinkered with to fit the Aussie Rules gameplay, so given they could get that done quick enough, alot of features could be added.

A lot of the stuff people want isn't affected by the engine. Team management for example, a realistic draft etc.

I don't care if they have to rebuild the engine or whatever - it's 2009 - whoever makes games should have some talent working behind them.

Well I stand corrected. But I still think there are more important things for them to worry about. As I said, all the awesome features can be added in later versions.

Everything that is being suggested takes time and skill to implement. I'd like to get Fiery Hawks opinion on this, but I imagine time is a small developers biggest enemy. I'm sure they have the talent, but what they don't have is a whole building of 100 staff working on one game.

You're obviously way too spoilt by the big guns overseas.

Time and budget were our biggest concerns. We never had an issue with talent/skills believe it or not. When you have a small budget you either get a big team for a very short time or a skeleton team for a long time. One thing no one ever knows about is how frustrating it is to get team lineups and licensing/uniform information. It's things like that which will guarantee an AFL game doesn't come out until mid-season at the earliest.
It's a catch-22 with the AFL games...to require a big budget you need sales but to get sales you need a quality product. I reckon the first iteration of a next-gen AFL game will sell well simply because it's on the new consoles. It's the version after that which is crucial to the future of AFL games.
I wish BA all the best...I'm like you guys, I've always wanted an AFL game to be proud of and that I could play for longer than a couple of weeks.
BTW - games ported from other engines don't always guarantee that it'll be easy to spend the time adding new features. In some cases it's easier to re-write. We're experiencing that on our current title!

...Ergh, the pain. The draft picks are still going to be randomized first and last names from AFL players like Joel Johnson or Daniel Deledio and unless a whole lot of effort is put into the game, they probably won't have faces.

Yeah, as i've said previously.... i'd be happy with a revamped Aussie Rules Footy (complete with Out of Bounds on the FULL soundbyte) :D. As outdated as it is, i still find it fun to play.

BEST COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC - Take NES footy..slightly improve the cartoon graphics so we can recogise different players, add some new ground sizes, a few more animations, player names and some better stats. Then box it and sell it.

It would sell double sales over an "authentic", impossible to play, frustrating to play game. BIG ANT should just make a FUN to play afl game first - i couldnt give two shits about fev scratching his nuts exactly how he does in real life. The wii is perfect example how fun and simple works better than picture perfect and complicated. IR Gurus made niether a fun to play or actual simulation - they fell in the middle and just plan sucked. NES is still the only fun Afl game to play - with a little work it would be a winner

NES Footy forever

NES Footy isn't even that good. Fun to play for nostalgic reasons, and of course it was awesome for it's time... but I think we can do better now.

I do agree though that the more complex authentic sports games could step it back a level or two... but there are markets for arcadey sports games.
