Hello. Perhaps you've been here before. Perhaps you haven't. If you haven't, here's what you need to know: these threads have a long history of being dumpster fires. For that reason, we take a much stricter approach to moderation than we otherwise do.

What is okay:
  • Heated debate / disagreement
  • Criticising the game / developers
  • Praising the game / developers
  • General shit talk

What is not okay:
  • Personal attacks / name calling / abuse / criticising the person rather than the argument / game
  • Repeating the same thing over and over and over and over (and over) to push an agenda or attempt to dominate the thread

We will not hesitate to permanently thread ban you if you are taking too much of our time.

In the wise, wise words of Jasper Beardsley:

Not sure anyone is doing anything wrong but you do you Freo16 👍
It’s no coincidence that the majority of people with anything positive to say about the game or Big Ant are nowhere to be seen around here anymore and all that remains are those with a certain opinion.

Well that's because Big Ant peeps got kicked off BigFooty for acting like Big Ant peeps, and they set up their own forum instead, so their biggest fans created accounts over there to be ignored by Big Ant over there instead of being ignored by Big Ant here.

If that sounds like your kinda scene then you're welcome to join them 🤷‍♂️

Nah it’s much more fun here watching you guys sulk every time big ant release a game, even though you don’t like them or the games they make but for some reason still have a significant amount of interest in everything they release or post online.

Glad to see the pitch forks have come out again....

And why are unscanned players complaining about their poor likenesses?!?! Did I miss something on that to make that sound like a reasonable complaint?!?!

Anyway… AFL 26 still surprises with occasional unique moments…. But this one line of commentary needs updating now.

So you're not complaining about anything then?

Convoluted way to get there but I'm glad we did 👍

Yah you're spot on, I scroll through the thread to see if any game updates and just see the same 5-10 people saying the same things they've been saying for 24 months. Yeah it's a forum, yeah use it how you want, but it is very funny to me that you all choose to spend all your time repeating the same negative comments for 2 years.

Us 'pro Big Anters' - which has become anyone who doesn't post 100% anti BA sentiment - have left because, where's the fun in reading constant, stale, negativity? Meanwhile the people who have 'never bought this game and don't understand the idiots who keep buying BA games' continue to regularly post in BA game threads. Is that better? Why the obsession?

I've said before, there are plenty of people/movies/books/games I don't like. I might have posted my thoughts once, had one discussion, and moved on. Boggles my mind that people are so obsessed and especially choose to pile on the people who are enjoying a video game, in the thread about said video game. Surely there are other things to be doing and spending your time somewhere that makes you happy, not honing in on bitterness and resentment

Not sure anyone is piling on anyone who enjoys the game. I've pulled up people who try and say there's no improvement from 23, because there definitely has been.

People see what they want to see, especially when it's an opinion they disagree with. Nuance is dead 🤷‍♂️

Luckily there's choice and Big Ant's forum is thataway if you don't like it here 👉

You don't think unscanned players should at least look like who they are meant to be? Same hair colour, skin tone etc? From what I've read they are just random without caring about what the player actually looks like. I think its reasonable that a short brown haired player have short brown hair rather than long red hair.

Andrew McQualter is still a random bald guy.

At least it's a step up from AFL 99 (I believe it was) where every single player was white 👀

Progress!

BigAnt now have a horrible reputation which has lead to people feeling scammed. I personally think they deserve every bit of criticism they cop.
Having said that, ‘they’ is Ross. He’s the one that’s caused this shit show.
Having also said that, I still enjoy AFL26 and as much as I dislike Ross, I do want BigAnt to keep the license as I’m sick of AFL games regressing every time there’s a new developer.

Like I’ve mentioned before, if AFL26 released as AFL23, it wouldn’t be copping as much shit as it does.
But we’re here now because of the shit show that was AFL23.
I don’t play any of their other titles so I couldn’t care less about their games unless it’s AFL related. (Used to play their cricket games but they get worse with every release)

That’s at least the fourth time in the last day that someone has been told to go to the big ant forums, kinda proving the point we’ve been making.

I think that’s reasonable in the case of AFL where’s there’s only one (two counting AFLW) major leagues in the game but in the case of rugby or league where there’s a lot more leagues and players, time could be better spent elsewhere. Especially considering those players may eventually get scanned in anyway or be created by fans in the academy.

In Evo 1 and 2, wicked witch went to the trouble of hand crafting players who didn’t have face scans and fans weren’t happy with those either and ended up remaking them all anyway.

Like I said, nuance is dead.

I'll put what I said in the format of an AFL article if that makes it easier to understand:

IF

You're not happy here

THEN

There are other forums where you may be happier

In other words, if you're happy here, then by all means stay! :)

And if all you guys want to do is trash on big ant and their games because of some grudge you have against Ross, then I suggest you take it to his twitter rather than overflow this thread with the whinging and negativity.

It’s like this is some little safe space for those who want to criticise Ross without having to actually face the guy.

Plenty of us said it directly to him - his response was to create his own 'little safe space'.

I don't use twitter but sounds like he blocks everyone on there too, so your 'solution' is a bit dodgy.

In fairness, I’m sure people want to face Ross. However, he’s blocked half of Australia 🤣

I’m trying to be as impartial as I can be but you gotta just accept the fact that people just don’t like Ross and they have every right to feel that way
I suggest you ignore what you don’t like seeing and reply to the posts in which you believe this forum is meant for

Is that the case though?
I haven't read much on it... so I don't know how close their likenesses are.

But if I didn't turn up to my footy club's photo day, I wouldn't expect the photographer to edit in a pic of me...
I actually wouldn't care if they tried to draw a cartoon, and got the skin colour, hair type or whatever wrong.... (that stuff's editable in the Academy anyway, right?)... so pretty bold of these players to have a crack at it... especially, from what I understand, they just didn't turn up themselves, when they could have!

And yeah, AFL, with only 2 main leagues, could sorta do generic builds of players (like Higgins and Wanganeen-Milera in 2023).... but as Freo16 said, Rugby League with more leagues, more players, more time needing to be spent on likenesses (when those very people you're trying to do a justice to for their likenesses, couldn't even been bothered to turn up?!?!?)...
Plus the resounding argument that's been said over and over here about Big Ant spending too much time on aesthetics....
I mean.... it all just screams of an unreasonable complaint.

I've pulled up people who try and say there's no improvement from 23, because there definitely has been.
I, for one, do recognise you did this...

It's always good to have constructive conflict on the different parts of the game....
Unfortunately there are others that have their head in the sand.... while accusing others of having their heads in the sand....

Oh wow 🤯 trouble in paradise! Maybe there just needs to be some common ground on here:

If you like Big At, thats ok. If you dont, thats also ok. If you like their games or you dont, either is also ok.

I used to laugh (and join) on the Ross chatter but its been 2 years since AFL 23 flopped. Again, its okay to feel however you want, but whats the end goal? He’s still as sensitive as ever and blocks anyone who criticises his games. That will never change.

If BA's games were competent, then his misbehaviour would be tolerable.

Probably because it's a rinse and repeat cycle (new game, similar game breaking bugs etc, dodging issues on social media etc). Circle of lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Meanwhile (yes wrong thread I know) I've officially crossed 800 hours in AFL 23 (630 on pc, 200+ ps5)

A friend at my work is a Big Ant shill (doesn't really like them and laughs at the social media stuff - yet he's rotated between Cricket 24/AFL 23/AFL 26 - similar to how I'm on Rocket League for 80% of my game time lol).

His ps5 game time is like this

AFL 26 - 90 hours
AFL 23 - 251 hours
Cricket 24 - 412 hours
Cricket 22 - 401 hours

Wasn't sure where else to put this, but for those that don't know, the old EA footy games (AFL 98 and 99) were actually made by English developers Creative Assembly, and the experience helped them go on to make Total War:

When I joined [Creative Assembly] I was called in to help with Australian Rules Football, which has I think 30 people on the field," says principal creative director Al Hope, who'd been hired as a trainee artist in 1996. The football game's tech proved helpful when it came time to depict armies clashing in feudal Japan. "We had already built up our experience of putting a large number of—well, for then a large number of characters for a sports game on the screen, and I guess we were going to take that and really push it further."

Assisted by AFL of all the things, Total War: Shogun stood out from the strategy pack and led to a successful series that's still going today.

I've always wondered if they're related, like family, friends or employees. A lot of them are just opportunistic YouTubers and randomly appear when their games release then split.

The crazies that popped up here in the lead up to and after the AFL 23 launch, and disappeared just as quickly afterwards, absolutely.

It was so strange some were defending the game being $100, when it should have been a patch to 23. It has the same gameplay with a few extra broken game mechanics, similar to how they threw in new mechanics into 23 after it was released.
