Opinion AFL Academy rules need to be refined

The AFL need to do better then. As it is Sydney and Brisbane get a quadruple boost compared to other clubs.

You get to select anyone from the southern states, you get F/S, you get NGA and you get academy.

Why is it your club should be getting the biggest leg up in the comp?

15 of the last 20 Premierships are from Victorian teams.
13 by the big Vic clubs.

Tell me again that NSW and QLD teams have the biggest advantage in the league.

Big Vic clubs, with marquee time slots coming our of their arse, home grand final, and with the ability to get in Free agents and trade in players are clearly the most advantaged clubs in the comp.

The AFL system is massively compromised, and balancing them is near on impossible.

As a general rule no one gives a toss about the salary cap compared to the draft

Answer seems simple to me

NGA / FS / AC get a 25% (whatever number seems fair) lifetime cap discount to their parent club

Most players will end up back where they belong eventually and the draft is way less compromised

I like it. There's a lot the AFL could do to make the draft less compromised by turning to salary cap relief instead. Priority assistance and even FA compensation could be turned into cap benefits instead of draft picks that screw over every other club by pushing their picks back. But the AFL seem hugely resistant to the idea after COLA.

Don't blame Victoria for WA and SA being basket cases for years.

You've got whole football states to yourself to promote the game and have elite juniors coming through in larger numbers and you're failing.

WCE are one of he the richest clubs in the country and there's still whining about Victoria.

Stop leeching off Victorian talent and contribute more.

The AFL funds Vic talent development, and gives **** all to SA and WA.

Stop leeching our money to develop your kids, and we will contribute more talent.

While you are at, share marquee time slots, and the grand final.

How about you let AFL employees be based in all states while you are it.

And who benefits from the Coates League being funded by the AFL?

The answer is every club.

That you say "our kids" is laughable.

Tell me where Serong and Brayshaw are from...

I mean you got Jackson to go home and now he wants to leave and go back to Victoria.

That's hilarious.

Vic clubs benefit more from having better Vic kids.

WA clubs benefit more from having better WA kids

Surely you agree with that. If a Vic players leaves a club and is in demand, he won't go to a WA club.

No I don't agree.

If a club can sell its vision to a player doesn't matter where they come from.

You think Gold Coast or Victorian clubs are benefitting the most from all of the top Victorian talent in that Gold Coast team?

Tom Lynch, Steven May, Prestia, Shiels, Caldwell, Callaghan, Cameron - the list goes on and on, GWS lost 2 or 3 last year.

Dangerfield, Lever are a couple more than returned home to Victoria

Rowell and King have not signed either for GC.

I am 100% sure you have less issues keeping a local player and probably on less money, than you do with an interstate player no matter how successful you are, or how well you sell the vision.

It would be very sad for the comp, if Rowell or King leave GC.

That's on GWS, not anyone else.

And Callaghan shouldn't even be in that list. He just knocked back a bigger contract from a Victorian team did he not?

And some decent players have gone home to SA.

Still plenty of good Victorian players in those SA teams.

It wouldn't be sad.

It would be a failure on Gold Coast behalf.

It would be a failure by the AFL to set a team up there if it keeps happening.

Now Swan is in charge at AFL house, the interstate teams will be given more Academy picks.

Good, when the GF is shared then let’s talk. The new rules are actually fair and it’s a good compromise anyway

You are very quick to blame the clubs, but having 70% plus of your list from outside the state, having limited marquee time slots which impacts a player's sponsorship opportunities, makes it very hard to keep everyone.

Plus the Vic clubs are very good at targeting the players.

You could have all the marquee slots you wanted it's not going to make the northern state clubs more attractive to players or fans.

In fact with the brain dead mentality of those northern states fans that would lead to even less people at the games than the paltry crowds they get now. Give the northern states sports fans the chance to sit on their arse and watch something on tv or actually go to the game and they are sitting on their arses.

NRL proves that.

You say Vic clubs, but it's really only the Vic clubs that pull large crowds.

GC and GWS have had far better results in attracting higher quality FA than North or St Kilda have.

Marquee time slots would help all clubs.

Agree, there is a reason Big Vic clubs win most premierships.

Yet Carlton and Essendon are two of the biggest clubs in the country but haven't won shit for years.

And how long did it take Richmond to come good?

Geelong isn't big or a Melbourne club.

Your point doesn't really seem that valid.

Even when clubs are given all the advantages, they can still **** it up.

Richmond shows that if you are half competent, then you can bring in free agents easily. You just need to target the right ones.

Geelong is a big club, as is the Hawks. They have both have a huge membership numbers. I have all Vic teams below Essendon as small vic clubs.

All the advantages?

The biggest advantage is having access to players others don't and a larger salary cap.

So who has the best advantages?

So who has the best advantages?

The biggest advantage at the moment is access to top end free agents.
The 2nd biggest advantage is access to top 40 players in the comp, via trade targets.
Father son is the other one that has had a massive impact.

The last 20 years premiership winners confirm this.

I don't love the NSW and QLD academies, and I think it has gone too far but I think the advantages the big vic clubs need to be wound back before you start cutting back academies.

Everyone has the same access to those.

Father son is the other one that has had a massive impact.

Father Sons aren't that common. The vast majority never get drafted let alone turn out to be elite.

It's far easier to find a good academy player than for a team to get a decent father son.

Academy literally doesn't have to wait long for another crop to roll in every 12 months.

What did it confirm when Brisbane was 3peating? WCE and Adelaide were winning flags?

What Vic advantages are you winding back?

I’m sure there would be some unintended consequences hidden in the machinations but it makes sense too me

All this points bizo is yuck , I’ve suggested it before in these types of threads but have yet to see anyone tell me why it wouldn’t be a shit ton better than what we have now

GF doesn't need to be shared. AFL GF is an iconic event at the biggest and most iconic sporting stadium in the country.

What second rate option will NSW offer up for it?

So you want to have your cake and not give anything as expected. Don’t blame you if want to keep the obvious advantages you have too, but you can’t want to take everything away from Northern clubs especially as it’s one of the few mechanisms that allows these clubs to have decent retention. Other sports worldwide share their Major final location anyway.

Rather than bleating how about you give up some of your advantages then we can perhaps dial back some of ours but I haven’t heard one thing you’d be happy to give up in return.

Glad the new leader in this area has come in he’ll be reasonable rather than the last one.

I actually agree with the changes for this year and they are fair.
