Speculation Jaidyn Stephenson [retired 2024] - calling clubs in the hopes of a return to AFL

Don't you understand , North get no compo or draft picks if he is picked up this year.

Yes, I’m aware of how the system works.

They’re not getting anything of value for him at the time. And sometimes the best thing is to have that type of player off the books, compensation or not.

I'd be happy for the Swans to get him down to preseason training for a look at SSP contract. If he shows the required hunger, a cheap rookie list contract for a bloke who will only be 27 at the start of next season with his talent would be a low risk high reward scenario that we should pursue.

So obviously, he'll go to Geelong and become a gun.

Doubtful. Not after the way they parted

In a way Stevo made things hard for Ginnivan, cheeky young bloke with a taste for a bit of fun. Pies may have over reacted about the team rules stuff with Ginniboy because of Stevo's rather more colourful activity.

Stephenson is a very brilliant skilled player, not strong but the speed and skill is absolute top tier. Would benefit Carlton hugely (for example) as a distributor and finisher if his personality wasn't so destructive.

Ginnivan isn't as skilled (still lots of skill) and is weaker and slower but has a much better brain, on and off the field. On field Stephenson was a great decision maker for us, its just Ginnivan has an elite footy brain. Off field Ginnivan may be a jackass, but he's not a nasty one.

I don't want to hijack the thread but... Ginni lost his trust with the playing group, he wasn't welcome back. After the white powder video came out, he retaliated against one of his teammates that was responsible for informing the club. He crossed the line, and was booted out of because of it. It was swept under the rug because it involved an inappropriate video of said teammate, and their partner. Those involved preferred it wasn't made public to protect their privacy.

It would take a full year for him to get up to speed fitness wise and then he'll be 28yo. The risk/reward isn't there and that's not even taking into account the possibility of him landing in trouble again. No doubt he's a skillful player though.

Oh I think it would be such a massive gamble no one would do it.

Jayden Stephenson is an object lesson for young players. The boring stuff applies to everyone.

I don't think he can be taken as a mid season draftee or a SSP rookie without first nominating for the draft again. He wasn't delisted, he retired, that contract is still in effect now so North could trade him prior to the draft as a procedural thing - they retain ownership of his contract for 2025.

He could nominate for the draft and get through alright then train with a club to prove he had it before being added to a rookie list as an SSP selection.

As I said elsewhere, you'll know most of your answer by how he presents himself physically when he arrives for the meeting.

Skill level was never in doubt. Good to watch when he was healthy. But in 7 years as a professional player his body strength and power never improved once. Which I think contributed to him losing the speed that initially allowed the skill level and flair to shine through.

Did have that difficult body type where weight would have been hard to gain which would be compounded by the kms ran per week. Weight and muscle gain isn’t necessarily the be all end all, But still would have expected there to be measurable improvement.

Then you factor in the off field issues. The only thing really going for him is maybe a renewed love for the game and the fact he’s only 26.

For what it’s worth I’d love to see the talent reach full potential and I wish him well but also think there’s slightly less talented players with more to offer and work harder going around.

No they can’t trade him he is off their list.

He would be a great candidate for a pre-season spot. If he shows he is willing to bust his arse and work hard for a chance of making it then he has the talent and if he doesn’t well you have zero obligation to him
