AFL announces 4.5billion, 7 year media deal (2025-2031 inclusive)

So this is an estimate I have eked out from the channel 7 extended deal (the increments are guesstimates)

View attachment 894194

In a nutshell, channel 7 must have more meat in the new deal if they are claiming "better terms" as there is no way that 2023 and 2024 can be less than the existing deal while still hitting $730M

Permanent Thursday timeslot perhaps?

Wouldn't surprise me if Ch7 has gone back up to 4 games per week with Thursdays + PH being every round now.

Revealed: Foxtel in AFL rights standoff over 'flip flop' clause

The Age-14 hours ago
The AFL has refused to drop a longstanding clause in its broadcast rights contract that allows certain matches outside Victoria to be shown on ...

Sorry, dont have access to the NiNE papers.

Open it in "incognito" through chrome

Industry sources said a clause known as 'flip-flop', which allows a free-to-air partner to broadcast local team matches in all states except Victoria, reduced the value of the rights for the operator and that the two companies could not agree to new terms.

The flip-flop clause, which was first inserted into a broadcast deal with the AFL in the early 2000s, prevents Foxtel from exclusivity on matches in popular cities such as Adelaide and Perth and was included in the most recent extension with Seven.

This article also confirmed that foxtel's NRL deal includes streaming rights to all games including exclusive rights that blocks out a mobile provider in the next iteration

But the NRL locked a discount as well as a five-year extension with the pay TV operator until 2027 for an undisclosed amount estimated to be worth about $1 billion. Foxtel will also have the last five Saturday matches of this year's NRL season exclusively and has increased the value of its streaming rights as Telstra is blocked from airing live matches from 2023.

What does mean in terms of the AFL deal?

Well Telstra currently pays the AFL $50M a year for mobile digital rights and didn't get a COVID discount. It should be noted that this deal is currently not even technically exclusive for mobile telephony in that someone with a different mobile carrier can still have a kayo of foxtel ap on their mobile

Any idea of how the money flows there, given the different legal entities involved?
So what does Telstra get for its $50 mil, is it known?

This is what the original AFL media release stated:

DIGITAL RIGHTS
Telstra retains the rights and will remain the AFL's partner, as well as delivering every game live, every week, to fans on the move across the country through the Live AFL App.

It will hold the rights for all hand-held devices, the club digital network, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and to the AFL website, AFL.com.au.

I'm pretty sure the originally deal was roughly an average of:

Foxtel ~220
Seven ~150
Telstra ~50

I was trying to widen my understanding looking to the future; 'the streaming rights' as an alternative to Foxtel & what Telstra has now.

Is the Kayo deal under the Telstra contract, using pictures from Foxtel feed or does the AFL 'clip that ticket' too.

I think its fair to say when Foxtel got these rights, noone was seeing the rapid move to streaming (remember this was back when Abbott said the NBN wasn't needed because only gaming nerds used the net). Foxtel Play was just an enhancement on the foxtel offering.

thats all changed now, and next rights you'd expect the streaming rights to be a much more significant element

Ten writing down future losses:
..... that disruptions to scheduling of live events it had the rights for “could be material to [Ten’s] operating results, cashflows and financial position”.

The network also included a provision of almost $47m for onerous contracts “relating to certain sporting and program rights”, Ten said in the financial report.

Last year featured the first of five Melbourne Cup horseracing broadcasts Ten will deliver under an expensive $100m contract the network signed with the Victorian Racing Club in 2018.

The value of the Melbourne Cup contract, consisting of four meetings across one week from Flemington, was far higher than previous broadcaster Seven West Media had been paying for the rights.

Ten’s other sporting properties have included some Supercars races, such as the prestigious annual Bathurst 1000 race simulcast with Fox Sports, and Wallabies Test matches, also shared with Fox Sports. The Australian reported last month that Ten was interested in gaining more Victorian horseracing rights.

Excluding significant items, Ten recorded earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $24.2m for 2019, and an underlying after-tax loss of $45.3m.

Looks like the whole TV industry is in a world of pain ATM!
Not looking good for the AFL rights to increase next time around.

The same would apply to all other sports as well.

The AFL has locked in $160/$165M a year in the two year extension with channel 7 for the fta rights.

I reckon they will, at worst, maintain the current level for subscription / streaming rights going forward

RA has just signed (with Ch.9 & Stan) a new domestic Rights' deal that appears to be very similar, in $ & contra, to the previous domestic deal for Super & Wallabies' matches- despite Super Rugby having a major decline in ratings, crowds, & general MSM interest! $100m for 3 years- $30m pa cash, & c. $3.33m pa for free advertising contra.

RA also will have 1 FTA live Super Rugby game pw on Ch.9- almost certainly on a secondary channel. This is a first for FTA (Ch.10 was on delay, previously).

Details in this link, which includes the SMH link of 9.11.20 (Where RA CEO R. Clarke says the new 2021 deal "...is more significant, in cash & contra, than the previous domestic contract with Foxtel (& Ch.10, for domestic Rights- not Super games in South Africa- of Super & Wallabies games. My words & emphasis)".

See post #2735.

This bodes well for future AFL Rights' quantum.

Amazon could be a new player in the next rights.
For me like to see double headers on Friday nights on FTA and Pay TV plus 1 Sat day game 1 Twilight and 2 night games then 3 on Sundays with a 5:45pm from interstate and a 2pm and 3:10pm game.
A good mix of games at different.
No Thursday night games unless it’s a public holiday the next day.

Permanent Thursday timeslot perhaps?

The problem is scheduling it without teams getting too many short breaks, especially with travel.

Only 2 teams play Friday, and they can't play again the following week, so that leaves at least one team coming from Saturday (5 day break), while teams coming from Friday will usually be on consecutive 6 day breaks, and there is a notable difference between having these things happen as an rare/occasional thing compared to them being routine parts of the schedule.

Travelling on a these short breaks would get clubs/fans/players annoyed, so non Vic clubs will have, in practical terms, less access to these games. (leading to inevitable complaints about not getting premium timeslots).

Realistically, it's a great idea...That you want other clubs to 'enjoy'.

Have you rated the $s up front for RA to the AFL scenario ?
I have not tried to do it as yet so you may save me trying to get my head around it.
Stansport @ $5 per month seems bloody low to me, although that includes coverage of the schoolboy game, so across many levels of the game.

You're forgetting the 2 teams that played on the Thursday which eliminates the need for 5 day breaks.

That being said, the last CBA had one 5 day break per club factored in, and if the 2020 season has shown us anything it's that the fixture can be more flexible without issues arising. An extra bye per team (an AFLPA wish that could be in the next CBA) would also make this more achievable because rather than spread the bye over 3 weeks (which people sulk about anyway) the AFL could schedule teams onto their byes any time between rounds 5 and 20.

When did they play the previous week?
