AFL reaps $80m from Gather Round deal

Referring to the previous page of discussion, given we can’t play 23 games each team when Tas comes in, my prediction is a move to 24 games (over 26 rounds) where Opening Round is Gather Mark II - played over the Vic Labour Day long weekend in NSW, Qld, WA and Tas (maybe even Vic) with SA keeping Gather Round permanently a month later.

Not suggesting it's not an achievement for Adelaide, only that it's not much of an achievement for the league.
It cannot always be about crowds and money although the $80 million paid to the AFL by the SA govt over 3 years is a bonus.

Gather Round is a great innovation for the promotion of Australian Football across the nation and at the same time a nice boost to the SA economy.

How does it promote football anywhere outside of SA?

Crowds arent something the AFL is in dire need of. This is revenue raising. It just needs to move around more. four year commitment to SA wasnt warranted.

Why does it need to move around exactly?

If you watch it on television it makes zero difference.

If you are attending live then you are simply having an extra little holiday. But in a city that is actually easier to get to and more affordable during your stay.

Its not just the matches that go with the round though, its the associated festivals and clinics and school visits that are run as part of it. Every city benefits from that - or would if it moved around.
