Collingwood centre half-forward Travis Cloke and his new teammate Quinten Lynch are among players to have used gloves that will be prohibited, Fairfax Media reports.

An investigation commissioned by the AFL and carried out by Melbourne's RMIT University found that only four of 10 gloves tested did not provide players with an unfair advantage.

Three Nike gloves - Vaporjet 2.0 Football Receiver, the Magnigrip Elite Remix 2.0 and the Superbad – were rejected, along with the Under Armour Blur II, Ironclad Box Handler Safety and Gilbert Rugby gloves.

Cloke uses Nike gloves and Lynch, while at West Coast, has worn an Ironclad glove.

Why Now when they been around for around 7+ Seasons?

Just sticking it to Collingwood from the Bloody Anti-Pies AFL:mad:

No TD they aren't sticking it to Collingwood. According to ESPN sports science reports that are intermittently aired during NFL matches some of the gloves that are available these days have up to 5 times the adhesion of tyres under full lock breaking.....

I don't know where the league have drawn the line on how much adhesion is allowed, however they have every right to do so because it was getting rediculously out of hand.

I'm not surprised at all to be frank.

What did surprise me was that so few players ( mainly the tall marking forwards and backs ) took advantage of wearing them when they were allowed.

Trying to think of current players who did wear a glove, Cloke and Q stick are probably the most notable, does Buddy sometimes not sure. Dawes was experimenting with one, no doubt at Trav's suggestion to try and help him hold on to a few.

I guess a lot of talls either found them uncomfortable or it effected their ball drop, but I think it's good that they're being banned, even if it does relate to both forwards at the club. It will be interesting to see if Cloke and Lynch wear the permitted gloves instead, or go back to bare hands.

Then why does the NFL NOT Ban the Gloves?

I thought Lynch had to wear the glove to protect his hand/finger. Surely he will continue to wear one.

Yeah they should just ban them outright, barring a medical condition a la Jason McCartney.

NFL receivers pretty much all wear them so it's a level playing field... and it's endemic now in that sport whereas to us gloves are still unusual (and frankly pretty ghey).

Then why does the NFL NOT Ban the Gloves?

At a guess its because catching and ball handling is close to the most important skill in some positions in that sport. It is so ballistic and the hits so hard that wearing gloves is practically a pre-requisite for a wide receiver, tight end or running back. For the players in those positions the gloves are as important as footy boots to AFL footballers.

AFL players on the other hand have made do for roughly 100 years so there is no real need for the sort of glove technology that is available these days.

Good. Bare hands only.
Exactly, make it fair for all, plus it will lower Chris Dawes marking ability back even more.:p

I like the idea of banning them though, our game doesn't have equipment at all that unfairly assists any player over another, perhaps other than gloves, so ban them and everyone is on the same playing field.

From pies it was Trav, Maxwell and newly Qstick.

Dawes tried one.

Will be interesting to see what effect it has on players holding onto the pill in contested situations.

I don,t if I am worried one way or another on these bans but ALL players had the choice whether or not they wore them no good complaining after the event that someone has an unfair advantage.
I do agree with TD,s assumption that it is another shot aimed at the Pies though all these things add up,less players less interchanges all seemed to be aimed at Collingwood or our players (Swan).

I think they have probably tested it against the adhesive grip of a normal hand palm. Therefore the ones that aren't banned would be equivalent to wearing nothing at all. FWIW, I think Cloke and Lynch will continue to wear them as a habit to keep them on their game. Could all be in the head for some...

Or the opposite. :thumbsu:

The 'grip' you can use in your hands definitely assists anyway.

Agreed, which is strange because everyone can use that too. Maybe they have regulated the usable brands already?

I'm thinking a glove with grip gel on it would do a fair bit of good. Grip usually only last 5 minutes on the hands then you have to reapply.

Wont assist you dropping the ball from hand to foot though. Imagine the poor bloke who goes to kick and the sticko keeps the ball in his hand.

Wicked leg swings FTW!

I'm on the outer. I don't have a problem if a player wants to wear a glove ..... up to them.

Non issue.

The glove for Cloke and Lynch is psychological more than anything.

They'll just wear a different glove and they'll be fine. Cloke will continue to take contested marks at will.
