He put on a few Rugby style fend off's to break tackles. Honestly is skills by foot and hand aren't too bad.

The only thing that will require a lot of work is his situational awareness. He picked up the ball in the 2nd qtr and if he was aware he could of turned on the gas and burnt a would be tackler off but it seemed like he wasnt sure what to do when he got it and was promptly tackled.

I was standing next to Sheeds at the Club end goals and he was coaching Izzy along, just reminding to stay close to his man, touching and watching.

Once he gets a grip on the concept of being tackled or bumped from 360 degrees and not just front on he will go a lot better. IMO.

When Pav visited the Queanbo Tiges juniors last year he made the point (in answer to a question about Hunt) that the biggest change for the rugby converts would be the peripheral vision, 360 awareness and ability to be attacking by going backwards/switching across field. Sounded odd at the time, but rings true now, and I'm not too sure what one can do to get past it other than giving them heaps and heaps of game time. Which, to be frank, neither Hunt or Folau have really had until a couple of weeks ago.

Underwood playing at Broadbeach, played well yesterday.

The first crossover games happen next round. Interesting to see if the QLD or ACT teams tend to be stronger.

Thats comprehensive in anyones language.

Tigers were excellent yesterday. Hard at the footy, skillfull, quick and desperate.

They never let Belconnen into the game at all, mind you Belconnen never gave a yelp. They never flew the flag and were the complete opposite to Queanbeyan in every part of the game. A disappointing display in Lexies 200th game.

It would be easy to get carried away with the performance we saw from Qbn but we cant be sure given the opposition. Belconnen struggled all over the ground and their players should be embarrassed to collect their pay packets this week.

Conversely Queanbeyan supporters would have been thrilled to see some of the "Tiger of Old" and they have unearthed some cracking youngsters who looked the goods.

Overs, Jolliffe and Walsh all look to have added leg speed and a touch of class to the team and while one drop of rain doesn't make a flood, it was an impressive start to their careers.

Tigers never had a passenger and while you could have said "All played well" and gotten away with it, special mentions must go the Heaslip and Cook who started the ball rolling for the Tigers. Kav and Quadie led by example and their players followed suit.

Well done boys, now the challenge is to back it up again this week.

As for Belconnen, you can sum up their day in one funny incident that occured in the 2nd quarter. Curtis had the ball deep in defence, he ran from the pocket with the ball and handballed to McAllister who was not watching and the ball smacked him fair square in the face.....classic football.

I am not sure if that was their best 22, but if it is remotely close to their best then a long, hard, cold winter awaits......and thats fine with me!

what a win, did any of the cairns recruits play ok

Not all played, I think only Hammond but I might be mistaken.

But as my previous post suggests, they were flogged all over the ground.

A Belconnen poster might be able to clarify but given that most who post on here are downhill skiers, they only sing when they win so It might be quiet round here for a while.

Caught the last 3qtrs of Tri Colours vs GWS on Saturday.
Admit i was very suprised at the result. GWS were quick and fit with an excellent game plan.

Ainslie appeared to go back to the Ainslie of years ago - playing for themselves, hogging the pill, not giving 1st hands etc.

Anybody happen to catch this game?

i heard Izzy was impressive at CHB

He looked a little lost in the First Quarter but seemed more comfortable as the game progressed.
Their appeared to be a reluctance to pass him the ball as his team mates were making their way out of defence.
I've got issues with teaching a bloke how to play Aussie Rules by sticking him in the last line of defence.
As the play moves away from your goals you are dragged up to half way then you are rapidly pressured as a counter attack ensues. You are matched up against some of the more gifted and deceptive players who find themselves playing in the Front Line. A lot of the moves you have to make are intuitive and based on years of proven experience....reading the play.
I would think you'd learn quicker, especially the 360 degree awareness required, if you were playing on the ball.
You would have to sharpen your reactions(which is an apparent weakness with Folau) and it would give a better indication of how big a 'tank' the guy has. He is definitely an impressive physical specimen and as I was standing behind the GWS dugout for the last quarter it was evident that he and the GWS staff are pretty upbeat about his efforts.

He dropped an easy chest mark in the first quarter from a scrubby 20m kick. There were clearly some planned moves to help him get a touch where he would quickly give off the handball to a bloke directly in front of him 2m away. He definitely gets lost out there, but it's only his second or third game, and I agree he looks a fantastic athlete.

The other thing is that by standing him out 'alone' on the backline any errors he makes be they possessional or positional, stand out and wouldn't help much regarding his confidence.

I also watched the Gungahlin v Ainslie curtain raiser and while the score probably tells the tale there were some mitigating circumstances. Running against the breeze and incurring at least 3 fifty metre penalties in the First Quarter didn't help the cause.
Trying 'delicate' kicks came undone on numerous occasions and there was a definite lack of communication that saw many Gungahlin players run down when in possession.
The blonde haired #2 for Gungahlin was outstanding in a losing side.
#6 and #9 also had very good games for Gungahlin.

The Tigers 26.13 (169) to 7.4 (46) last Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park was their biggest over the Belconnen Magpies since 1992. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Belconnen have been so good the past decade - what's happened that they could cop such a hiding?

Reminds me of the sort of hidings West Canberra and Tuggeranong used to get back in the early to mid 80s.

? dunno about impressive - but he will be improving every week - might just make it.

his 1st kick (a scrubber) got 1/2 a bronx cheer (after last weeks no touches. He did some good things, and didnt look like a total spazz, so thats better!

AFC looked like they were playing a praccy

I am hardly gloating or getting carried away with the win up da, I would be posting the same way if Tuggers beat them by 20 odd goals, my only point is that when they win they are all over it..... lose and they go missing.

Shows a lack of character.

Are the clubs expected to pay for the travel costs to go and play sides interstate?

There is a fair whack of travel involved in the neafl or whatever it is. Just looking at the site now and there is teams all over the place. For example Eastlake are playing Morningside this weekend and Mt Gravatt coming to Dair Farmers.

How does it all work because when I click on any ACT name it shows me the ladder, all ACT sides, Swans and now GWS but no other side. So will there be a GF in Canberra between the top 2 sides as always?

Cheers

My guess is the AFL assists with cost...anyone confirm this or explain otherwise??

I believe the top 2 from each conference (North & South) play in a GF and the winners of the 2 conference GF's play each other in a "major" GF for one of a better phrase.

The Queanbeyan Tigers (who had around 75% of their team last week under 23 YO) to hopefully carry last weeks momentum into the game against the unknown Mt Gravatt Vultures and win.

Swans to add insult to injury and thump the battered Belconnen Magpies

GWS to big, to quick and to strong for Tuggers

AFL Queensland Premiers Morningside to be to good for Eastlake

The West Adelaide "Bloods" to be far to strong for Ainslie in the Foxtel Cup.

Cant make the Qbn game unfortunately and if your in the same boat as me then jump onto QBNFM 96.7 from around 11.45am Saturday to listen to the game.

A Bit High you have certainly gone hard at the man with your recent posts. you may have kicked a few more goals in your career if you went the ball. :)

i take a different view and in fact i believe that the result last weekend just highlights how poor a coach Mark Armstrong must have been. i mean you take a 50 goal a year forward out (armstrong), B Neely and they still managed to unleash such a torrent of scoring onto Belconnen probably proves they have game plan improvements and might i add that the game plan now wont revolve around kicking it to number 1. it probably also proves that QBN had blinkers on for 10 years and i believe the alarm bells would be ringing over at GWS who have recently employed Armstrong.

now our boys, have an uphill battle in Foxtel cup but i believe that this weekend will do them a world of good. i also think the grounding they got from GWS last week was just what some of the players needed in the preparation for 2011

Always went the ball AFC2, not my problem a few blokes got in the way along the journey ;)

As for the Tigers, while I wasn't at the game today it appears they were sent crashing back to earth. Last I heard Mt Gravatt were up by 10 goals deep into the last term.

Coaching staff would be disappointed with the performance but the commentators continually made mention of the speed of the Vultures and the poor decision making and skill errors of the Tigers. A complete contrast to last week. May tell as much about Belconnen as it does about Queanbeyan.

Just goes to show a week is a long time in football but I did suggest in an earlier post that the Tigers would be inconsistent this season with so many young lads.

How quickly they learn from a loss like this is the key.
