AFL Canberra is between a rock and a hard place. They are near enough broke and need money.

150k from a non-football Licenced Club is a lot of revenue into the system

They see spending it on the Wildcats as a poor investment - and keeping the Tuggeranong Hawks club alive, and a strong presence in the valley where 100,000 people live as a priority to prevent losing the area to soccer...

If AFL Canberra don't want the Wildcats in the competition, then why are former/semi-current Wildcats players unable transfer to other clubs in the ACT?

I just saw the WIN news tonight announce that the merger is off.

ACTAFL is in big trouble now, a 5 team comp would make the league the laughing stock.

That's just ******ed.

A merger would have potentially built one stronger club. The end of the Creek as we know it without the sponsorship $ transfer is a disaster. The board at the Creek who made this decision is not pro-football, they are arrogant self centred asses who were only out for themselves...

There have been plenty of successful mergers over the years in Regional football - this should have been another one.

Great work Western Creek, saying no to the merger will kill your club. Going on your own will do these things - Ensure you have ANOTHER year with only 1 team, you will go on AGAIN without winning a game and getting BELTED week in week out and it will ensure that ulimately you will fold as a football club in Canberra.
Get your dick out of your hands and do what is right for your players, your club, your sponsors, your supporters and the league!

Alternatively, go into semi-recess for 12 months. Play one side out of reserve grade and start recruiting and planning for next year now. Save your whole football budget so you can buy half a dozen players to come up from melbourne. Give yourself a base of a side to build around.

How about they take a borry on the carpet and start smearing shit all over the walls, that would be a better idea than the Creek standing alone. They are never going to be competitive and only cause embarrassment for the comp when they come up against Sydney and the top Canberra clubs.

The only probelm with that statement chaddles that AFL Canberra have said that the Wildcats will not be allowed to participate in the competition at all - so there won't be any floggings at the hands of the Swans or anyone else for that matter. All the Wildcats have done is succeed in killing themselves - if they don't accept the merger with Tuggers, then they're finished.

A real shame to see a club go down because of the attitudes of a small minority of people that can't see past their own backyards. It would have been a pretty competitive team in the south of canberra had the two clubs come together.

WOW, you guys are really great at slagging off the creek without knowing the full story! Strong words ABH, if only you knew what has REALLY (yes i can underline and bold aswell!!!) happened in the past few weeks.

If there's going to be any finger pointing in everything that has happened, that finger should be squarley pointed at the league, not the creek. Ask them how they tried to get their greedy little hands on the money from the Labor club, behind WC's back. Money that is given to WC each yr, for 10yrs for the sale of the WC Social club.

Greed and lies is what has killed this merger and i can tell you that the Creek and Tuggers have not been guilty of this. The league should have never stepped in, things were given the green light by both clubs, before this happened.

Congratulations to certain unnamed personalitites, you may well have succesfully RUINED the AFL Canberra Competition. IF Tuggers get through the year this yr, it is hard to see them continuing in the future with their financial situation. No Creek, No Tuggers, 5 teams in the competition. CONGRATULATIONS to those involved, if ruining the league was your main objective :thumbsu:

Well said Tuggboat! Surely it is time to put the respective club's pride aside and move forward. If the wildcats do not agree with the merger they will be gone for certain! With the right attitude the combined team has the potential to be competitive on a weekly basis and who knows about the years to come. With the recruiting base possible (providing eastlake don't get too greedy at calwell) they could become a successful club of the future. Wake up wildcats!!!

Simple fact guys, Wildcats have the money to register and affiliate with AFL Canberra, and Tuggers do not. Tuggers owe a heap, AFL Canberra has no money to bail them out.

Kind of makes the entire Strategic Review performed last year a complete waste of everyones time.

As expected.

AFL Canberra were also meant to be looking into a review of bylaws and other actions to clean up the comp.

Maybe CD's can breakaway and reform the Monaro League :D

Well said. Tuggers will not survive either. remember also, that WC went to Tuggers before last season and suggested a merger only to be told to F*** Off in no uncertain terms. Had the Tuggers had the foresight and management skills, none of this would have happened.

The league especially Warke and Gosling have a lot to answer for- they are the ones that have lead to this, when are the clubs going to wake up and put people on the board with the skills to make effectual decisions for the good of the league, and not the whats good for their own clubs. The league has not had good management for 15 years, they keep appointing dunder heads as general managers what does that say about the board!

Before you start giving the league administration a hard time - perhaps you should consider this.

When the merger talks first started between tuggers & the creek (I'm talking about after the wildcats begged Tuggers to re visit it), there were obvious issues with two licensed premises sponsorsing the one club. In order to overcome this and to ensure the money from the labor club was kept in footy, the league arranged to have the money come to them, but then would channel it to the new identity. You people are kidding yourselves if you think that AFL canberra were going to "hijack" the cash from the Labour Club. All they were doing is ensuring the money would be kept in footy AND going to the new identity.

The alternative was for that money to be forfeit to other sports / charities. You should also consider that the Labor Club has no obligation (other than a debatable moral one) to continue to pour money into the Wildcats at all. They had an agreement with the Weston Creek Lions, which as we all know was wound up over 12 months ago.

INCORRECT! There is a contract in place with the Labor club and the Weston Lions or subsiduries (canberra wildcats) for the money for the sale of the social club to be paid out over 10yrs. Ther is still 4 years left on this contract. That money can not be forfeited to any other sport/charity.

Please get you facts straight, before throwing out rash statements!

Who knows what the league had in mind for that money that they tried to take from WC? They sure did try to get their hands on it behind the Creeks back. It is somewhat irrelevant however, because the league can't get at that money!

WHY would the league want to take the money other than to help establish the new identity and ensure that the money is spent properly. Weston Creek has proved that it cannot handle themselves financially over the past ten years. Im sure the league would want to ensure that the new identity dont stuff up financially again!!! IF weston creek say no to the merger they will not play in the league this year as stated by the league. This means instead of the $$$ going towards the league it will probably end up in the hands of other league, union or soccer clubs...Smart move!!!

As stated by CHRISTMASHAMS, the money cannot go to another sport. The labor Club will most likely put the money toward AFL juniors. And lets face it the league are not good at management anyway. This league has a high standard of football in spite of poor adminstration.

About time some of you experts put up your hand at the next AGM of the League. You will get a different perspective of footy life and the personalties you have to deal with at club level.

Original

I have been at the League AGM's in the past.

If you are not an old boy willing to listen to the big clubs interests, you are nothing.

Many of the ideas brought up do get raised / have been raised at League meetings in the past. Many were brought up in the Strategic Review. But none of them are any good for anyone if the League becomes a 5 club laughing stock...

I would of thought that it would of been the best interest of the league and its clubs to have another competitive team involved in the states premier competition.
A lot of blame has been thrown around on this site as who is to blame - one thing for certain is there are some egomaniacal d!ckheads involved for this merger not to get the go ahead. It could of been a win-win-win situation for Tuggers, Wildcats and the League. This merger should of been a no-brainer but somehow, some bigheaded f%^kwit has managed to screw things up to the detriment of the league.

Just heard Dario Postai on the radio saying that the league had rejected their bid to enter a side in the reserve grade comp (I assume JUST the reserve grade comp) and they are now going to lobby AFL in Melbourne direct.

Who needs information about new recruits!

What is the league doing? It's hard not to be so critical! Surely a 6 team reserve grade comp is better than 5 team comp? Can't see the leagues logic on this one, unless it is sour grapes, or the league was trying to get rid of WC the whole time?

And no I am not going to nominate for a board position on the league, however i don't think it would be hard to do a better job. Just incase anyone was wondering or thinking of suggesting the old "well if you think you can do a better job, then you nominate for the board"

You seem to know it all so tell us the full story so we can form an opinion. I wrote a week ago on what I knew and Im sure you would have had a read of it. If it is wrong then tell me where its wrong and give us the full story. If not go down with your sinking ship!

Will the league now attempt to get one of the 'Big 4' to prop up the reserves comp again this season to get that 6 team comp?

3GM would Belconnen be interested in doing it again?

Mate, go back to page 97 and read my posts from there, you should get a fair idea of what is going on. Never once have i blamed tuggeranong, or anyone from the tuggeranong FC. As stated before; things where flowing along nicely between the 2 clubs before the third party stepped in and F$%KED everything up! WC is not to blame in all this, nor is tuggies.

Mate, happy to go down on the sinking ship, just wish that people would stop all Bullshi*t unjustified blame that keeps being lumped on the Wildcats
