Swans' polling 'lack of respect'

SYDNEY co-captain Barry Hall is far from surprised the AFL premier has attracted only lukewarm backing from the other 15 skippers.

The captains were asked in the annual pre-season poll which club they expected to face in this year's grand final.

Ten said Adelaide and six thought St Kilda.

Likewise, 12 of the 15 other captains thought the Swans would make the eight, while the Crows, Saints and West Coast received unanimous backing in this vote.

"I couldn't vote for my own team, I would have rated us," Hall said.

"It's nothing new to us.

"We're used to it. We've been written off the last three years and we've made the finals every year, so we're certainly used to it from a Sydney point of view.

"I suppose all we ask for is respect, and we obviously haven't got it."

Last year, only four captains nominated either the Swans or West Coast to make the grand final.

Adelaide captain Mark Ricciuto said the poll results showed the Crows would receive a lot of extra attention from opponents.
"It is a good vote of confidence, I guess," he said.

"It doesn't mean you're going to get there, but all that means is that everyone understands the potential of our side - and probably means that they're going to scrutinise us more and have a closer look at us than they've ever done before.

"There's certainly a lot more expectation on us and that's something that we've got to expect and become very comfortable with and certainly we're happy with that expectation and looking forward to being able to perform under pressure."

West Coast captain Chris Judd meanwhile received strong backing from his peers to win a second Brownlow medal.

He received six votes with former Eagles captain Ben Cousin among three players on two apiece.

"It's a bit early for that sort of talk, I think," Judd said.

Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd led the Coleman medal voting with five, one ahead of last year's winner Fraser Gehrig.

Top Carlton draft pick Marc Murphy was the captains' pre-season pick for the Rising Star award, with seven votes.

The majority of AFL captains fancy Adelaide to win this year's premiership and new West Coast captain Chris Judd to win a second Brownlow Medal in 2006.

These thoughts came via a poll of all 16 AFL club captains in Melbourne for an annual pre-season photo shoot on Wednesday.

The captains rate Adelaide, West Coast and St Kilda as the best sides in the competition, while newly-appointed Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd is the clear favourite to win a third John Coleman Medal.

Carlton's Marc Murphy is the hot favourite to win this year's NAB AFL Rising Star Medal, according to the poll.

At a gathering in the AFL Board Room, the captains were asked five-key questions on the season ahead, with the proviso that their answers would be treated anonymously.

Last year, four captains named either Sydney or West Coast to reach the grand final, while five skippers named St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig as the eventual Coleman Medallists and three leaders tipped Richmond's Brett Deledio to win the Rising Star Medal.

Footballers aren't known for their itellect. Fancy only 6 of them picking the Saints!! But seriously folks, who gives a toss about a crummy survey between AFL captains. It's like the football previews in the papers - wouldn't even wipe my furry behind with it. It's rubbish. Here's to shrugging off the pre-season form too as an unreliable indicator too. I hope the saints lose against sydney this weekend. I want west coast, richmond, and whoever we meet in the early rounds to take us lightly. Percentage could be crucial if we're vying for top spot with the crows.
