I think I found a slight way to not get outmarked as often.

In one game, I tried using both "triangle" and L2 (PS4 controls), and while I didn't outmark my opponent, I was able to hit the ball away from them before they could mark it (spoil the ball) and then it fell to the ground and made it a 50-50 contest to get it back.

It is far from ideal, but
What do you mean it's far from ideal? Having to spoil isn't ideal?

I honestly can't believe so many people are struggling/complaining about the marking.

If you're behind or out of position don't try and mark the ball- spoil it.. If you're in front or have good position- time the mark and clunk it or try and time the mark/hit the body so they can't mark it..

CPU take a lot of those little chippy uncontested marks I agree but the genuine 1 on 1's aren't an issue if you don't try to take a mark every time in terrible positions..

100% there's issues with the CPU goal kicking, everyone man on man etc but I'm finding the game fun as hell especially against mates. Looking forward to seeing what they can tidy up with the first patch.

Wow I thought i was getting the hang of this went and played online got my azz handed to me badddd like ten times i can't mark for crap

Could be due to lag. I played a lot online when I had the game, but I found the lag unbearable. Sometimes it was in my favor, and in those cases I'd smash the opposition, and other times it was in their favor and they'd smash me. There was never a middle ground.
You can tell when it's in your favor as you win just about ever single contest and it's much easier to play on and link up.

Not sure if it's matchmaking issues or something deeper but I've never had issues with other games and played AFL Live 1 religiously. Ultimately it's why I took the game back, but if this improves I'd consider buying again when the price reduces.

Great tips video from Syrum. Some of those centre clearances are really smooth.

Some good tips!

I will say that in contrast to Syrum, I've had a lot of success bringing players out from defense/half back up at their ball carrier when the AI is about to get out, as long as the player I bring off their man isn't too far away from the opposition player with the ball. Sometimes it's not the right move like in the video, but other times if you can get the tackle/intercept, you're pretty much guaranteed to get away with that extra number at the contest and you stop a fast break. As long as you judge it well, it's worth it for the few times you will get burned IMO.

It's also why I like my half backs on attacking. Pushing up to the contest to press the ball in is more valuable than always sticking to the forward and creating certain 1v1s in your defensive half IMO. Numbers around the stoppage is everything! As soon as you can isolate a 2 v 1 or 3 v 2 in a contest, you should be able to at least create a contest in your 50, if not just overlap the whole way for a goal.

I definitely need to get bumping/pushing out of the marking contest down as well as the evasive right stick stuff. Once I have those, I'll be a force :p.

I think the main problem with the marking/spoiling (other than the short kicks) is that it wasn't clearly explained and wasn't that easy to intuit either. First day everyone was trying to figure out when to tap or release or whatever triangle as if that would solve things. Turned out figuring out the timing was probably only 1/3 of figuring out how to mark the ball well along with positioning and bumping, which are probably both just as important (sometimes more) as timing.

Mini rant, apologies in advance for the long-ish post. I understand many people have probably raised these issues/vented about them, but I'm just gonna type my opinion anyway.

I don't mind the game when it's on easy (obviously not much of a challenge) as the bugs and negatives of the game aren't as noticeable. When I chuck it on medium, that's where it turns to shit. Priddis can suddenly out run the Hill brothers, the CPU can shrug off two tackles within a second and kick an inside out torp from 50m in a heavy wind in the rain.....things like that simply aren't acceptable, there is no excuses for this.

Commentary is beyond f***ed! Jack Watts is called "Watt". We all know how bad Richo is in the game, so lets not go too deep into this, but he gave zero energy in his commentary and it's unacceptable that WW thought it was good enough to record and actually put it in the game, I mean Richo literally got paid for that garbage and we spent money on it. Pathetic
I question if Wicked Witch actually watch AFL, no seriously hear me out. We all know what a mark is, yet in the game we hear 'catches it, caught it'. This isn't cricket, how does this actually make it into the game?!!?!?!

CPU missing from the goal square is a 98% chance of happening............seriously does this actually not get patched before release? The developers would've played the game multiple times and yet they still decided that this was a good idea!

Rain has no effect on the game, not sure why. Roof doesn't shut at Etihad.......what.

I quite like the graphics to be honest, plus gameplay>graphics is commonsense anyway.
Marking/spoiling system needs a patch asap, spare me the whole 'I just don't know how to mark' it's an unbelievably shit system. Marking is OP, really shouldn't be though.
Be a Pro camera angles are poor and you don't have a grade in game to tell you how you're doing.....I just don't get how this didn't occur to them, seriously.

How they thought people would enjoy and understand the umpiring is beyond disbelief. The fact you can't even choose the leniency of umpiring is just wrong.

You can set up some nice plays, especially from the corridor, which is awesome and one of the positives about the game. I like the Channel 7 cut scenes, very nice touch that adds to the game.

I honestly believe the best AFL games are still on PS2. Since PS2, we've actually gone backwards, AFL Live was alright (incredibly overrated on here) and AFL Live 2 was horrendous.

Despite my bitch fit, if Wicked Witch actually listen to the customers and provide some half decent patches, the game has potential to go from okay to good quite easily. The game is ok, not that good, not too bad, bit of fun, but overall the bugs just ruin it for me and I'm sure plenty of others.
The game should never of been released, it clearly has an unacceptable amount of bugs that they knew would cause outrage with gamers, yet they released it anyway. This is going to come across as quite rude and harsh, but to be honest, I don't get how they can take much pride in releasing a game that isn't ready, any other company that cares about there product would refuse to release that game and simply delay the release date.

AFL Evolution with good patches has the potential to be the best AFL game yet by a long, long way, fix the bugs that should never of existed and you'll have a lot more satisfied customers, but as of right now, the bugs ruin the game and at times make the game unplayable.

Yes something I clearly haven't figured out watching that video and seeing the position he is taking marks from

Could be.. could be i just suck lol more practice required on harder levels i think before diving in online again

No combination of pressing triangle seems to work
Playing against a few different mates who couldn't seem to tackle well/very often- I generally found they were smashing the tackle button when not selecting the player in pursuit. The people who have played Fifa pick it up a lot quicker- start practicing pushing LB (or whatever the change player button is on PS4) before tackle. Every time the CPU hand passes click LB before tackle so your closest player goes in to tackle.

Clearly there's a few elements to it but that's just the learning curve isn't it? The instruction book + tips loading screen explained a lot of it. Obviously most of us will ignore the manual but if you're struggling to the point you feel like logging on to bf and complaining you'd think you'd have a quick squiz at the manual. Now that I've got the hang of it I win a lot of 1 on 1's in my forward line and half a lot in my back line/in general play. Just can't stop the little chip kicks. Anyway just my 2c!

Yep 100% agree. I always bring the backs forward to stop the CPU bursting through the middle and hoping someone will just run them down. Definitely creates more hard ball/loose ball chances than goals out the back and then allows me to get back into a handball game and score on turnover.

One of the most satisfying parts of the game I reckon when your half back's leave their man- come flying up and intercept a loopy handball or crunch the oppo then chain it back through the middle and hit up a leading forward. Definitely need end to end camera to do it effectively though!

Im getting pretty good at this game now but one thing is kind of annoying me, has anyone else noticed that in Be A Pro mode (on hard) the AI always kicks down the middle from a kickout, as a midfielder i simply have to run the top of the 50 and wait for the ball to be delivered to me, sometimes without any pressure, this needs to be sorted out as I remember in previous AFL games the AI would sometimes go to the flanks and also short kick the ball in.

This ****er is giving away all my tips :p

Getting used to playing on legend, the only thing I can't master is set shots :(

Got the achievement for kicking a goal after the final siren, felt good to nail the shot :D

Great tips video from Syrum. Some of those centre clearances are really smooth.

Watched the video, I picked up a lot of those tips from experimenting and playing the game throughout the week. Knew about changing tactics in the menu to get the game to open up a little more than constant man on man, what I didn't know was how to approach the kick in after a behind (as I've posted previously, I'll aim for a player, or open space then run on to it when it hits the ground).

I randomly discovered the bump in the first few games I played and figured out how to do it in marking contests, love it when you get the advantage in a marking contest.... curse myself when I give away the free kick just like Jack Riewoldt :D.

One thing I didn't know about was the lob hand pass :D, I'll be putting that to good use! I don't have an instruction book in front of me (having the digital version) and only briefly looked at the online controls.

Timing the ruck contest is an issue for me, I've found holding both LT/RT, moving the player with the left thumb stick and aiming where I want to hit the ball works 90% of the time on Beginner-Medium....... but it doesn't work out well on hard/legend.

Is the reason Big Ant couldn't do it because of the budget requirements..??\

If WW had a lower budget then it's a pretty good job that they've done, big step up from Live 2 but probably not quite what you'd get from BA.

hopefully a patch comes out at some point..

A positive is that it's nice to have an AFL game out on a current gen console..

I used it last night with no issues.
Wonder why I can't. I tried in between every game last night and still no go.

Actually, I should clarify, I mean the online part, I can't see any other player created stuff at all as it just says it can't connect to servers.

I could see top teams and searched and found Syrum's corrections (didn't actually try and download though).

Have you tried changing your online status? Change it to appear offline, change it back, restart the PS4 and it should work. Used to have the same issue in 2K when download custom artwork in MyGM mode.

I don't care that much about it, so I won't be going through the hassle of doing that. Was just curious if anyone else was experiencing it. Some of the bugs in this game are just baffling that they have not been picked up. Almost like it wasn't tested at all.

What do you mean "you don't care THAT much" ?

Wouldn't his instructions take like 5 seconds to try ?

I shouldn't have to switch a setting on and off then restart my PS4 to get a feature to work that I would literally look at for a minute then never go into again. Thats how I mean I don't care that much.
